I liked it. Wish you could speed the dialogue a little better but super interesting game.
Cabernet is a gothic masterpiece that bites deep into your heart and refuses to let go. Far from a mindless horror game, it is a beautifully written, poetic, and intimate journey through the heavy moral dilemmas of a 19th-century vampire. With an atmospheric aesthetic that feels like a classic painting in motion, it is a striking, deeply moving narrative experience where choices truly weigh on your soul—a mesmerizing hidden gem to be savored like a fine wine.
I had to return this because it ran really poorly outside of cutscenes. Much stuttering even after following the different help guides.
Cabernet was a really nice surprise! Though fairly linear and limited in certain ways, the game allows for a surprising degree of freedom and player agency. Inhabiting a newborn vampire doctor, you navigate meaningfully consequential moral choices that gradually come to define your character, the relationships she forms/maintains/complicates/ruins, her place within vampire high society, and the stubbornness (or frailty) of her tether to humanity. There is also an interesting metaphor here about alcoholism. Liza (the protagonist) grapples with memories of her father's alcoholism and the destruction/instability it caused, as she finds herself struggling to manage a destructive drinking habit of her own. The feeding mechanics reinforce the metaphor: in this game, feeding is not only necessary, but addictive. It can also offer diminishing returns... unless you're careful, you can end up needing more and more to achieve the same result. You might even become a blood-addled haematophiliac, cultivating angst through the slaughter of cute, innocent bunnies (and cute, innocent humans). Alternatively, you might decide to use your vampire powers for good. Or to make your pet cat immortal. Or... It's a relatively short game, but it gets a whole lot longer once you start replaying. I was happy to find that there are often multiple ways to solve problems or resolve quests... and to find that the ways you resolve quests have lasting ramifications on the story. In a world with not nearly enough games narrowly tailored to indulge my love of vampire roleplaying, I'm very happy to have discovered this one!
Cabernet - An intriging story with solid gameplay accompanied by near perfect sound design
Let's get all of the bugs I encountered out of the way first: If you want to deallocate a just allocated experience point from a skill which is boosted by one of your dresses, the game wont let you so you need to exit the menu and restart the allocation process. I changed into a bat inside the doctors office while its dark, moved around, and couldn't change back after since Liza didnt want to move due to the darkness and I couldnt change back because I was to high up.
What is Cabernet?
Cabernet is a 2D RPG set in a fictional eastern european town. You earn experience point by completing different quests for people in your new town. Those experience points can be spent on either your understanding of Misuc & Arts, Literature & Poetry, Logic & Science or Hostory & Politics. Each is important when you want to improve peoples opinion of you or to get out of a sticky situation you got yourself into.
What is the story about?
You will be playing the young woman Elizaveta Morozova who just died. And promptly got up again because she got turned into a vampire. Now Liza must try and fit in with her new unlife all while different people try and use her for their own plans.
What about the graphics?
2D sprites, hand drawn it seems to me. They fit the atmosphere so unbelivibly well. The menus: an old timey passport as the character sheet looks gorgeous. The text boxes with a little symbol next to it to indicate who is talking fit great.
How is the atmosphere?
Dark. The opening cinematic sets the tone perfectly for the rest of the game. The developer writes: Cabernet explores heavy subjects including alcoholism, social conflict, death and suicide. It portrays cartoon violence, blood and gore. But there can be lighter moments of joy, laughter and love as well. All in all a good solid mix.
How is the gameplay?
Good with a few hickups from time to time. Walking around works fine and flying through the small city is fun. Sometimes you get stuck on an edge and need to fiddle a little to get around. Ocassionally the prompt to interact with a person/object switches last second and you interact when you didnt intened to. A few spots for object interaction are rather small and it can get very finicky to hit the one you want. But everything else just works. The blooddrinking and the rare quick time event (you have about 5 sec to press the button) are solid.
What about the music?
Oh my god. This is probebly the best aspect of Cabernet. The music hits the spot. The voice acting is superb. Every character is voiced. I can't overstate how immersive the whole experience was because of the soundwork.
The characters?
Every character in this game is written wonderfully. Their hopes. dreams and fears are presented in a believable fashion so you can connect with them. Each personality is unique and written so so well. You will need some suspension of disbelive a little bit because the beginning feels a little rushed.
Performance?
I experienced a few occasional mirco stutters in my ten hours of play when I moved quickly across the screen. Loadingtimes were nearly non existant and everything else was smooth.
Additional notes?
'... will remember this' is used to frequently. A simple 'opinion improved/deteriorated' would be better if the action is as small as petting the cat or just being nice to someone. I think the save system in place is an interesting choice. Yes you can only save in one specific location so you may want to get back there regularly if you want to try something, but at least it doesnt support the old 'save load until you have the desired outcome' loop. I would like it better if you could scroll through the possible choices instead of using nested menus. Make it a clearer where and what the player is supossed to do in a timed event.
Conclusion
A very very good game. It does have some problems and could be even better but for everyone who likes a story driven vampire game without combat, a possible romance, multiple outfits, timemanagment, and multiple endings; this game is for you!
I've had this game wishlisted for years while it was still in development and I was so excited to finally get the chance to play it! It's one of my favourite vampire games, no doubt! What I love most about the game is its understanding of the source material by maintaining the Eastern European tradition. Most Western media removes vampires from their original context in favour of shock value and fantasy. Cabernet maintains consistency with many original Eastern European folk tales of vampires and the Victorian Gothic of Bram Stoker's Dracula, thus offering something simoultaniously authentic and familiar to audiences. The notes explaining Eastern European vampire lore creates for an immersive experience as well as a learning oppoutunity for players to understand the contexts of which vampires emerged from. The choices Liza makes and their consequences tackle the nature vs nuture problem, and in turn takes a more humanist approach to vampires. Similarly to Louis in Interview with the Vampire, Liza ponders the consequences of her actions as she navigates her new, unwilling unlife as a vampire. This is best exemplified with the "vegitarian vampire" trope where Liza can gain sustinance from animals despite it being less filling. The modern trope deviates from blood and sex of True Blood and The Vampire Diaries to offer insights into the feelings of the individual as they navigate a new world. By providing the player with the choices of good vs evil--and later their consequences-- the game exemplifies that vampires are not born evil, but made to be evil through their circumstances needed to survive (or plain bad decisions). I appreciate the diverse romantic interests as it stays true to the Victorian notion of vampires representing all that "plagued" society ie. sex workers, homosexuals, immigrants, etc. I also appreciate it because it's 2026 (2025 release date).
