“Human memory, akin to human perception, is a fragile and impermanent thing. To distort it is a mere trifle, accessible even to those uninitiated to the occult.”
Plot Synopsis
Veronica writes the scripts for Snezhana, a local fortune teller, on exactly what to do and say during her fortune telling. Unfortunately it’s been two months since Veronica has been paid and Snezhana hasn’t read her texts about getting the payment she’s due. One morning Veronica goes to Snehana’s office to try and get her paycheck. Instead of finding Snezhana, she finds Lynn, someone who also works for Snezhana. Not long after, Amalia, a fan of Snezhana, also shows up. Lynn then hands each of them a letter from the fortune teller. In Veronica’s letter, it tells her to find a lipstick that is the same color as the green beads that came with her letter. As the player, you can decide to follow Lynn’s advice to search the office for the lipstick, or follow Amalia’s suggestion to make the lipstick. After either finding the lipstick or making it, Lynn tells them to meet them at an address the next day to deliver the lipstick to Snezhana. The next day the three meet up outside an apartment complex. Upon going inside and to the correct door, a strange person in a mask and robe answers and lets them in. It is here we meet Caball. It is not her name, but more of a title. Veronica calls them demons, although they state that they are not. Caball has gray skin, golden eyes, and horn-looking things protruding from her head (honestly reminds me a bit of Homestuck characters). Veronica hands the lipstick over to her and some chaos begins to ensue. Depending on one of your choices, you go down one of three routes. You either make it out of the apartment with Lynn, Amalia, or on your own. Each one follows a bit of a similar story in that you’re looking for Snezhana while learning a bit more about the companion you’re with. If you make it out of the apartment alone, you team up with one of the “demons” named Gaspar, who serves under Caball. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3251604142
About
Caball is a short game. In total there are 7 different endings. Each route has 2 endings each, except for Amalia, who has 3. There are also a handful of CG’s as well, although for some reason not all of them show up in the gallery. Some of the CG’s also feel like they are a bit differently drawn, especially compared to the sprites. I assume this is because there are two different people who worked on the graphics and they have slightly different styles of drawing and split up the CG’s they did.
Graphics and Sounds
I personally really enjoyed the art of the game. The sprites are well drawn and for the most part the CG’s are drawn exceptionally well. I have a few favorites. Some of the CG’s even have moving parts, like eyes opening and closing, and a little glitch effect. I have nothing to say in particular about the background art. It does its job to serve as the environment and fits the scenes. None stand out in particular. Some use 3D art assets that you might see in some Webtoons (for those familiar), which there’s nothing wrong with. Veronica really likes one plant in particular, as she owns it 4 times. The OST fits the setting for the game well and helps bring in the creepy and mysterious atmosphere that our protagonist and company find themselves in.
Thoughts
The game really falls into the mystery genre. It feels like the player does not get a full picture of some of the plot points unless they play all the endings. And even then, there are some mysteries still left unanswered, which is a bit unfortunate. The characters are all different and unique, and have their own goals. They are all certainly a bit messed up in their own ways though. I wish we learned more about Lynn and what he did exactly for Snezhana and why he seems to have such an obsession with weapons. In a similar case with Amalia, it would be nice to learn more about why she seemed to be so obsessed with Snezhana and the occult. There are points in the game that characters point out that Snezhana talked a lot about Veronica and even considered her like a daughter, but none of this was really talked about in detail or ever gone more in-depth. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3251611380 We barely learn anything about Snezhana or Caball and I feel like we only scratched the surface on Gaspar, Lynn, and Amalia. There is a hidden character as well that we learn basically nothing about too. The game could use more fleshing out, but it is still a very enjoyable experience. There were a few errors that I noticed, but not too many overall. At times it feels like the writing or translation is a bit stiff and odd from an English reader’s standpoint (especially Veronica’s words of “welp” and “shucks” just felt out of place), but overall the reading experience and translation seemed alright. I’m not sure if it is intended, but the changing between the characters saying Snezhana and Snezha was constant and it felt like it wasn’t very consistent. It was difficult to tell if that was done on purpose or was a mistake. It also mentioned that it was Summer in the game, but it goes back and forth between saying it’s freezing and then also that it’s hot, so I’m not really sure if I’m missing something or if there is a mistake in the writing.
Overall
I hope that we get to see more of these characters and this world in the future. I’m quite literally dying for more. If I don’t get more, Lynn may need to snap my neck. Don’t understand why I’d say that? Play the game. I had so much fun playing this game. It was over way too soon. I’d like to know more about Veronica, where she got her earrings, how she met Snezhana and her background too. It’d also be neat to see some more romance. There were certainly hints of it, but not enough was there. Although I’m sure the game was focusing more on the mystery and horror than any romance. I just want to romance Gaspar…and maybe
Mael
too (and to learn more about this “secret” character as well). https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3251612206 I feel quite miffed that Amalia was also the only one to
get a kiss CG.
Like at least give the others the same level of detail. That’s one of the worst things you can do in a game. If you’re going to
give one character a kiss scene and hint at romance with the others, then you have to give them all kiss scenes and CG’s.
That’s probably the only major thing I have issues with. Although I’m happy that at least someone got one and don’t mind that it was Amalia. I need more Gaspar, please. I need more of this game, the story, answers, everything. There’s so much more that can be added and I really am hopeful there will be more. Otome Lovers wishes to thank Levistok for providing a free review copy of this game. I also made a guide that will help you get all the endings and achievements in the game (although it’s a very easy thing to do). CABALL, developed by Levistok, is a short visual novel that follows Veronica in a world full of inconvenience, curses, and demons. Working for a fortune teller known as Snezhana, she hopes to collect her pay for her recent work. However, Veronica’s life is entirely flipped on its head as she doesn’t find the woman she was hoping to see. Instead, she meets Lynn and Amalia, two people with whom she is not that familiar – barring the fact they work for and follow the fortune teller. In this world of mystery, perhaps you can get the answers our MC deserves, and maybe a little sprinkle of romance? 𓆩♡𓆪 Upon starting the game, you are at Veronica’s place of work, expecting to receive her owed paycheck. However, instead of Snezhana, you’re met with Lynn and Amalia – soon to realise all of you have been thrown into a mess by a woman you once worked for. Lynn has been given three notes. One for each of you, but we only see Veronica’s. Your boss has requested you get her a lipstick that matches the colour of the beads included with her letter, and from here you can start to split into different paths, which will have a significant impact on the later story. You can choose to either make the lipstick or search the office to see if Snezhana has one she left behind. Once you’re done there, Lynn requests the group reconvene the next day to meet where they have been told to go – a place that will change the beliefs of Veronica permanently. After living her life not believing in the fortune telling that her boss has always shared, she comes face-to-face with a species called Caball. Demon-like creatures with their own cult following who shall make their own demand, wanting to know the location of the now-disappeared Snezhana. There are three different main routes you can follow here, depending on choices. Work with Lynn, Amalia, or Gaspar – a Caball who works under the one we have just met. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3275357353 While the story of CABALL includes plenty of mystery, there are other plot points included – the main side-plot being romance. As I am reviewing this for Otome Lovers, you can imagine that this was something which took my interest when I started this game. However, while I love romance being added to a plot, I feel this game did not have enough length to handle both a mystery-filled plot with unique lore that needed filling in with the combination of romance. There’s very little acknowledgement to it, really, other than the mention of the occasional date and
a kissing scene Veronica gets
with only one other character. My personal suggestion would have been to scrap the romance for us to learn more about the characters, world, and mystery – since there are many questions left unanswered, which leaves me praying for a sequel for the answers. Speaking of the world, I enjoyed the overall story that was told. You get to see the cult world from the eyes of someone with such scepticism and disbelief – someone who still manages to keep her head screwed on the whole time despite her beliefs being turned upside down. Veronica is a great MC, not falling into some tropes I’ve seen. She’s strong, and confident enough to not cower even when people are in danger. The Caball are a foe clearly not to be reckoned with. Their powers are interesting yet terrifying, and I wish we saw more of them – learned more about their lives and powers. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3275357325 Unfortunately, as mentioned before, I feel the game does not dive into telling us much about the other characters enough. Often we’re blasted with some big information, and it either feels forgotten about or just not really… touched on enough. I understand this is due to the fact that this is a rather short visual novel, but I also feel like the game could have benefited from more lore, character development, and general world building. There’s some characters, such as Gaspar, that I’d absolutely love to see more of. However, due to the lack of information, there isn’t all too much I can tell you about the characters. Not other than the fact that Gaspar was certainly a favourite, with Amalia certainly being… one of my least favourites. Not to say she is a bad character. Simply one I dislike for my own reasons, mostly being her strength in belief over the fortune telling and Caball, and the fact that
I was shocked she didn’t betray Veronica in every ending. I don’t think I’ve ever trusted a character so little.
Perhaps this is another thing that could be settled with more exposure to the characters themselves, who they are, etc. While I cannot say much on this topic, there’s a secret character that I absolutely loved. Meeting them only made me more desperate for a sequel. Levistok, please??? Or give me an after story for Gaspar. On my knees begging. An important part of visual novels is often the art, and I felt CABALL did not fail in this aspect. The art style chosen was very pretty and unique enough for it to stand out – and the basic effects of some of the CGs were fantastic. In fact, the game had more CG content than I expected. Not all of the backgrounds seemed to fit entirely, but there was also plenty of variation and some of the backgrounds looked fantastic. Notably the ones in the Caball’s home. While the music wasn’t anything particularly special to me personally, I feel it felt the game and the vibe it was hoping to give off. It’s good enough that I was happy to listen to it – to help settle into the mood of the game as it changed. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3275357381 Overall, despite some of the complaints I have had about my experience with CABALL, I believe the quality for the price is certainly worth a recommendation. The amount of great art that is included, the fantastic characters, and the story itself all work together to make a short yet interesting story. I do believe some things like romance could have been removed, but I also understand it may have been to make Lynn and Amalia's routes more filling (which, let me say, they have nothing on Gaspar). This is likely because you learn much more about the Caball and their world through his, whereas the routes with the other humans were much more... Plain is the world I’d use for it. Yet overall, CABALL has been an enjoyable visual novel experience I could certainly recommend at its price, and I do truly hope for more content from this world in the future. 𓆩♡𓆪 Otome Lovers wishes to thank Levistok for providing a free review copy of this game. I played the game in the route order listed in JeminiJess’s guide. A fantastic guide to follow! Caball is a short, yet captivating indie visual novel with a fascinating plot revolving around demons and rituals. the game is a nice blend of elements like mysticism, horror, and romance. the narrative follows Veronica, who is trying to find Snezhana. she encounters Lynn and Amalia, throughout her journey. each character adds depth to the story, especially more enigmatic characters like Caball and Gaspar. Veronica is a likeable main character, whose development throughout the game is both captivating and not one-dimensional. another notable character is
Maël
, due to his complex personality and the dynamics he brings to the story. one of Caball's most impressive features is its gorgeous art style. the visual designs are stunning, with beautifully drawn character models and richly detailed backgrounds that perfectly capture the game's magical and eerie atmosphere. the art book included in the DLC provides an in-depth look at the character designs and various game elements, such as background images and cutscenes. I'm particularly fond of artbooks, as they add an extra layer of appreciation for the artistry involved in creating the game. it would be cool to see some comments from the artists (or anyone involved in creating this game) as well! the background music in Caball enhances the overall experience, complementing the visual elements and the narrative's tone, creating an immersive atmosphere. one small suggestion is the addition of timestamps with the date and time for saves. I think this feature would make it easier to manage and navigate through multiple saves, enhancing the overall user experience.
It's a short VisNov. Buying on sale or full price if you wish to support them. I played Caball: Sunset Hour demo and saw both titles on sale. So I grabbed them both playing them in order to understand what happened in Sunset Hour.
OKEY! Now I get it. This is the "start" to all things. Like a... Prequel. So basically... You get a(n) occult/mystical story right away. You are just thrown into it and there are no character backstories or anything like that. I really hope that the continuation has those... Unless the entire focus are those "cat people". Don't worry... THEY AREN'T CATS. I didn't not read this game in Russian and I didn't not switch to English because my Russian is superbly perfect beyond any reason of doubt. That aside, it's great in Russian and English... Is actually pretty damn accurate too. I mean... That's better than some other novels I came across. I mean... This isn't bad. The CGs look great. I just don't have much to go on... Except for the events that transpired. I did remember how how to Russian, so that's a bonus. So yes, it was interesting. THANKS!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is the Russian version for lazy people / Вот русская версия для ленивых: ОКЕЙ! Теперь я понялa.
