About
Interact with different characters and objects through point & click controls, explore locations
that feel distantly palpable. Make sense of an unstable reality that hides its very nature.
Exchange information extensively, debate on the general decor, or partake in backwards philosophy.
It'll help out eventually.
Play as a performer, murderer and master. Intertwine their stories and bring the ceremony to a halt.
The game evolves depending on who is being played, ranging from slow-paced exploration to having a literal gun.
Recall long-forgotten events from a distant reality, and get out.
Butler Guillotine features a soundtrack entirely made of public domain finds of late 19th and early 20th century opera and chamber music. Most songs are only slightly altered, or even not at all, so that they can stand out as much and as well as their original recordings.

This game is a little artistic gem, something halfway between Twin Peaks and Alone in the Dark (the first one). Honestly, I find this game indescribable :o but it really stirs up so many emotions. It’s probably the kind of game you either love or hate, I suppose—but I absolutely love it <3 I think there are games that stand out from the crowd and leave a lasting impression; for me, Butler Guillotine is one of them, I highly recommend it!! ^^
It's an art piece and it will occupy space in my head for quite a while
You might look at this game and think it’s artsy. And you wouldn’t be wrong, but it is so much more than that. It’s art. And that’s not just in its visual presentation, its score, its story or mechanics. Butler Guillotine manages to merge presentation, narrative and gameplay in a way few other games on this level do. Sure, you can play it as a (well, comparably) straightforward point & click adventure, solve puzzles and be done with it in maybe 2 hours. Or you can engage with what the game makes you experience, take your time, think, feel. Understand, no, comprehend. And then let the game throw you right back into a sea of obscurity. Get your brain and soul kneaded for 3 ½ hours. Or, you can be like me and spend your first 30 minutes of the game just admiring the walking animation, followed by another 30 minutes marveling at the lighting. Then take an hour philosophising about the first lines of dialog. Take a break of a few hours just listening to the music. OK, I did none of those things, but I felt like doing them. And I probably will in the inevitable second playthrough. In short: This game is fantastic. And not in a pseudo-intellectual manner that lets you look down on people that are “not getting it”. It grabs you and drags you through an experience that you never knew you missed. It surprises you. It punches your gut. It makes you fall in love. You should play this game.

Gutwrenching story, beautifully told. Really enjoyed the cinematography and visual direction here, the fun point n click gameplay, and the tightly-written script. There's so much to dissect about this game, but it's still very accessible to those less familiar with surrealism. Already a personal favourite indie of the year so far. Massive kudos to the 1-man dev team behind this, can't wait to play more of your work!
Good time! Will have an even better time piecing the plot and themes together.
A great little piece of point-n-click art! If you like lynchian storytelling, go ahead and play it! BUTLER GUILLOTINE offers, through text and visuals, a story that is easy to take in, but abstract enough to leave to the player the brain-tickles of pondering on how the pieces fit together as you progress. While the game's otherwordly setting and storytelling requires at least some reading-between-the-lines, the depth itself of the narrative can be grasped at many different levels, up to each player's affinity with surrealism. You could push interpration further and search for as much symbolism as possible, or take it more at face value and be the spectator of a cosmic and tragic story. I found the game enjoyable either way! Despite having primitive and sometimes janky graphics, the game makes up for it by featuring very creative compositions using fixed-camera angles, reflecting the surreal ambience of the hotel and its happenings. A camera usage imaginatively built atop those of classic point-n-click and old school horror games. Of interesting note is the classical music soundtrack, almost completely consisting of royalty-free recordings. A curious feat of music direction, which nicely contributes to the artistic integrity of the game. There are some negative points to bring up; The slow walking speed being tiring when you get stuck on exploration, dialogues choices which close the exchange when they could simply send you back to an earlier branch of the dialogue tree instead, and some bugs with screen resolution (use borderless window mode). But these are minor complaints that did not detract from my enjoyment of the game as a whole.
Well worth the purchase, top class arty point and click swanky time for those of stiff upper lip, marvellous.
Man This is art
From one (former) dev to another, I totally get having your vision. Butler Guillotine is definitely a game of vision and clearly most people who played it like the vision. My mere 25 minutes of playtime felt like an hour. The dialogue, while all text, will not let you click to the next bit when a cutscene is playing. Cutscenes could easily have been twice as short. The writing was fine but the pacing of the cutscenes were so slow that anything that could of had any bite was lost on my impatience. I do not need nearly 10 seconds to read a single word. In those 25 minutes I did not understand anything about the plot or goal. Besides that for some reason picking up the gun forces me to kill myself, which my character refuses to acknowledge. Shock lacks value when it amounts to nothing. I wandered around, talked to a few butlers, and sat through a few painfully slow cutscenes. One of my biggest issues with video games is video games that make me wait. I don't want to wait. I want to play a video game. Cutscenes? Fine, either have them tightly choreographed, or let me click to read through the text. This game does neither. The gameplay? Walking through bare halls, forced to find the specific NPCs I must talk to in a specific order to acquire the items needed to progress the game. No puzzles. No mechanics tied into the narrative. Just wasting my time. I've enjoyed many an artistic game. Journey, INSIDE, LIMBO, to name a few. I've even enjoyed a few adventure games, such as the Broken Sword Series, Machinarium, or Silent Age. All of three of those games have a much better first 25 minutes, never mind hours. You can have a vision. You can make an art piece. I've done that myself. You can also make a good video game. I'm sure of it.
古典音乐,超现实主义,意识流风格的转场,固定视角展现的精妙镜头,再加上深奥的剧情,可以说是艺术性拉满了。
