Man what an awesome game. Nexus is amazing, looks so cool. I don't get some of the neg reviews the game is really fun, nothing buggy for me at all. Can't wait to go back and play more.
It's fine, it's fun, I guess. Pretty big disappointment after really enjoying the first game's charmingly dated references, and cohesive narrative all tied together in a neat little bow to be one of my favorite walking sim collectathon puzzle games of all time. By comparison this game feels like DMT bit off more than they could chew, and probably put entirely too much work into the VR compatibility rather than a more polished base game. Mechanically, all of the new features are fine, and fun, but they never amount to more than "shoot a couple targets" or "the game is such a slog that we gave you this item that lets you move 7x faster over halfway through the game." Many of the areas suffer from a really inconsistent aesthetic, where the first game really shone with the very pixelated and low poly graphics in a stylish and coherent way, this game suffers from a baffling soup of aesthetics that don't feel representative of about anything. It's not quite vaporwave, it's not quite y2k, its not quite low poly or pixelated, and it just feels a little lazy. The first game has a good feeling of depth and location design, whereas this game feels very samey and claustrophobic at times, which feels bad with gargantuan open areas like the nexus feeling very empty by comparison. I will continue recommending Broken Reality (1) to people, as I think it holds up as a charming and dated time capsule to me, but I don't think i can recommend its sequel in good faith. If you played the first game and want to scratch the itch again, this just didn't do it for me. I think DMT has it in them to make a great game, but I can't say that they've impressed me with this one.

I was expecting the release of this for quite a few years already, however I feel that it underdelivers a tiny bit or maybe I expected something that is more of a sequel to Broken Reality. That's not to say that BR2K is bad or worse if anything it's more of an alternative or a different take to what was the previous game. The game overall is nice and it works (when it wants to since it's quite buggy as of now) but it is really difficult not to compare it to the first game since Broken Reality was full of attitude, personality, more focused design, nicer puzzles/exploration, and very memorable areas and soundtrack. On the other hand 2K doesn't really leave any everlasting or strong impacts aside from "yeah this looks nice"/"this is pretty nicely made" (I think I heard a remix of Domo Paradiso and Cruise 64 and that's really it the soundtrack is super background music which is not bad but it leaves a bit more to be desired). I think one of my personal gripes that I could think of with 2000 overall as a game forgetting that Broken Reality exists is that a lot of the areas feel more like corridors to go from A to B than explorable areas, some puzzles feel a bit weird and sometimes I was wondering if I was like getting ahead of myself or skipping something because of how they're presented (which is not really presented at all aside from the initial tutorial ones). However despite it all I'd still say I recommend it because again it is not bad, it is pretty nice and entertaining I just wished it was a bit more than just that. I'd rate it "Makes me wanna replay Broken Reality"/10 PS: If you've never played the first game do yourself a favour and play it after this one (or before) It's in my opinion the better experience of the 2 games.
Quick review: Pros:
Most of the music Minami Beach, Nexus, Universum & Grifton Visuals The Bow, I guess?
Cons:
General level design Conflicting art direction/world building Slow movement speed Far too much backtracking Obtuse quests/puzzles Bugs/glitches Repetitive music/ads/art The new Katana mechanics.. Baffling decision The story is a whole load of nothing The final world (Clouds) is frustrating to navigate The museum world goes on far too long Absolutely everything about Crypts, just awful everything
This reminded me exactly why I don't buy games anywhere near release anymore. A game that has been in development for 8 years comes out feeling unfinished, unpolished & uninspired. Stylistically it's a bit of a mess, where the Y2K "feel" only really exists on the surface level. References are all over the place with mentions of Gen AI & cryptocurrency taking enough of a front seat for it to be really jarring and out of place. Yes, the first game had some slightly disjointed references too, but not as glaringly obvious as this. The gameplay is incredibly tedious, with backtracking becoming unbearable after the 3-5 hour mark. Bugs are littered throughout the world, with characters constantly phasing through objects, invisible walls and uneven terrain that you can easily get stuck in, as well as spelling errors and inconsistencies. At times, quests are too vague and uninformative, which becomes even more frustrating when you quickly realise there's no map.. (There was one in the first game, no idea why there wasn't this time). Movement is also painfully slow and there's no sprint, but you can travel slightly faster by strafe running in diagonal directions, so that's... something? There's a lot more I hold issue with, but I just can't be bothered to go on. I dunno, the whole thing just didn't remotely capture my interest like the first game did. In fact, with the dev team repeating mistakes from the first game, I think it's retroactively damages my love for it as it is now clear that these drawbacks were choices rather than errors/inexperience. It feels bad man, but it's 2026 and there's far too many good games to play. I recommend the first game if you've never played it, but I do not recommend this game to anyone :(
No coherent identity, the puzzle design is deeply uninteresting, and the writing is thoughtless. The setting is a fetishistic homunculi of the "internet" - in no way represents the 2000s the way a game like Hypnospace does. It's shallow and difficult to trudge through - would perhaps be stronger at 3 hours of length but it seemed like I was only a quarter through the game
Its kinda cool and funny but lacks ALOT compared to the original. just feels too slow and not punchy enough.
Really like the visual style and graphics of this game! Pretty intriguing, fun gameplay too. Glad to see a sequel to one of my favorite games : )
It's good! Honestly smoother gameplay than the original even. I feel like there could have been a bit more in terms of character moments and overarching plot, but that aside it's a wonderful way to experience a Frutiger Aero inspired virtual world.
I like it, I don't think it's as focused and polished as the first game. I naturally, and probably unfairly, compare this game to the first one, which is one of my favourite games ever. Thus, this is a comparison that even a fantastic game wouldn't win, as I hold the original Broken Reality in such high esteem. Regardless, I have a couple of thoughts: (1) The whole 'Y2k' thing is fairly superficial, most of the themes and about half of the visual content in this game are current. This also gives this game a more conflicted identity. (2) Neither ending really lands with me. One feels unfinished and the other feels dull. They almost don't feel connected to the rest of the game. I remember visiting reality at the end of the first game and being awe-struck by the whole sequence (music by DDS helped too) and being really quite impressed with how the story was concluded. The plot felt well paced, and all a part of a single coherent narrative that I resonated with. I did not feel like that in this game. (3) The game overall feels more janky, in that specific unreal engine sort of way. I think some of the flaws and visual give-aways of unreal feel more obvious here too. It's immersion breaking on occasion. It's a little disappointing that it feels like a step backward from the first game, when a step forward would have meant the release of my new favourite game. Easier said than done, I suppose. I would still reccomend this game to most people who enjoy a walking sim, but not before the first game.
