Updating this review to go from highly recommended to barely recommended. I am frustrated that I can't get the last 3 achievements as the clues to the puzzles are non-existent or non-sensical. Also, hours and hours of searching for specific bofkins that only appear once in a blue moon is not that much fun after a while. The game seems to be dead as well, as the developer never responds to comments. So sad, because I quite enjoyed this quirky little game up to a point. Got this through Curator connect and wasn't sure it was my type of game, but once I started I got quickly addicted to finding the bofkins and solving the puzzles. Still not done yet, but thought I would give my review with 15 hours of gameplay. I think I'm close to the end, but then again.... :D A charming simple photography adventure turns into a mystery with loads of challenging, layered puzzles. The bofkins are cute, the island is small enough to get around easily and it's not hard to get the money you need for upgrades. Loads of notes scattered throughout that change when you trigger something. So you need to go back and see what changed to solve the next puzzle. Very intriguing. I forgot to add that the music is very relaxing as well. Good price point too.
How the heck does this game have so few reviews? Well, I guess I know why, indie games do not get enough exposure nowadays, but this game is really neat! It is an intriguing and highly interesting puzzle game, one I think could be considered a 'metroidbrania' at least in part, and while I am nowhere near finished yet I think, I have gotten at least one major milestone done and the game has only gotten more interesting as a result! Deffo reccomend for those who like weird and interesting puzzle games!
Honestly, I love this game. It's a perfect blend of interesting puzzles and intriguing mystery wrapped up with a fun photography game that involves taking and collecting pictures of Bofkins! Highly recommend for those who like Blue Prince or Myst but want something different to do whilst completing the juicy story!
x-- 8/10 --x Dev was kind enough to gift me a key, thank you dev ^^ [Even though I received it for free, below are my personal thoughts] Absolutely amazing game! What starts out as a simple photography game quickly tuns into a puzzle / mystery adventure. + Loved the camera mechanic, I'm very happy to add this game as one of my best games along side Berry People, Alba, Madison, Pokemon Snap, Umurangi Generation, TOEM, Penko Park, and Bugsnax! All of which utilise a photography mechanic of some sort. + Loved the story and the puzzle solving / mystery elements + Bofkins are stinking cute, just loved their childlike and simple designs Honestly I don't have a lot of negative things to say about the game. Only three recommendations: - A mini map would be very useful to have - When you upgrade your camera, some cosmic changes would be super cool. - Give the NPC's a bit more dialog / backstory.
There is a childlike wonder to Bofkin Island, the enjoyable gameplay loop of capturing photos of the adorable bofkins through the lens of your bofboy combined with the mystery surrounding the island and the multiple layers deep puzzles that you have to solve in order to escape the island(??) create a game that can sink you into a world for a good few hours, nearly 10 hours to complete my first run through and i didn't get all the bofkins!
I've played the beta version for a couple dozen hours, and it's a lot of fun. The graphics are simple and charming, but the puzzles are challenging and curiously engaging. If you enjoy puzzle games, this is definitely worth a look.
Okay this is alot of fun. The photography and collecting is very rewarding, and then you start to notice the puzzles. The clues will keep you thinking while away from gameplay, and keep you coming back with fresh ideas to solve them. Your curiosity will keep you reeling for more, as you continue to seek out the Bofkins and piece together all the info scattered around the island.
Good puzzles in a bloated and creatively bankrupt world
Remember The Witness island, which was shrunken to the point there was close to none empty space left? This game is the opposite, it is an island that is too big for the real substance it does have, with relatively big chunks of virtually empty land. Which is a problem, because you will be running around a lot, gathering clues for puzzles scattered around the map. The puzzles are admittedly decent, and not easy at all, but everything else just blows frankly. As I said, the world design is just uninspired, I have seen 15 year olds making better designed worlds on Roblox. Very few landmarks, no eyecandy, no interconnected pathways across regions or different biomes/areas. It is one continuous landmass, you can go from any point A to any point B in a straight line. Can't pin/stamp locations on the map, which could have been super useful. There is this weird photography system shoehorned into the game, where you can 'capture' the Bofkin creatures, which you can sell at the shop to buy upgrades and keys to unlock chests with further clues. The money making meta is running Bofkin bounties and delivering letters between the same 3 NPCs with 2 lines of dialogue. This is very bland and boring imho. Either flesh it out properly, or cut it, but this progression system just doesn't work and reminds me of the most basic Roblox games. This whole “catch ‘em all” system is just a side activity that is not integrated into the puzzling aspect of the game at all, they seem to exist side-by-side, which might be the reason for the bloated island. If you want to make a pokemon game, make a pokemon game. If you want to make a puzzle game, make a puzzle game. If you want to do an innovative fusion, you better do a damn good job. On the technical side, the game runs good, and there is no jank with the movement. I gave this game a fair shot, progressed into the game significantly, but had to DNF, bc simply the games remarkably unremarkable design couldn't hold my interest.
Had lot of fun on this game. don't be fooled by the appearance! the puzzles are devilishly difficult with a good mix of logic based and pattern recognition and code based problems to solve. and all with a revealing story of whats really going on. Try it out!
