Broadway: 1849

Poor... I've bought several games from this producer, and, in fact, the first was very good, but the others... The problem is that you seem to have quite no choice on what is happening in the story and what will happen. Your actions could lead to a "modest" success or... to a complete disaster! Every wrong decision counts too much and, at the end, it become only frustrating to continue playing it. And, I also fail to understand the logic behind many outcomes of your choices. For the story itself, it's not bad, but it's a bit of everything: social drama, riots, characters from the work of literarature, theatre, and so on... and ghosts, homicides, secret meetings and arsons! Too much to create something that stick together. And... if I'm playing Broadway: 1849, why I have to manage a theatre, fight the criminality, change the course of social history and constantly save people from... all of kind of problems? Does this make any sense? Sorry, it's not a good game and only a pretty modest story.

It’s an earlier iteration of COG games, and by that metric it has an entirely different feel than some of its later counterparts. It’s race-blind (not the same as race inclusive), light on deep-characterization, and more interested in plots and stats. [h3] This game is: a love letter to the theater, and to the people of who love theater. This game is: an expressway through a certain part of theater-history. This game is: fun, if you can, or want to, appreciate any of those things. [/h3] If you are willing (re: eager) to experience this with these things in mind you’ll have a great time. I did! The theater nerd in me made doe eyes at the references.

A text-based game in the vein of a Choose Your Own Adventure book. The characters are compelling, though at turns one-dimensional. There are no clear "wins" when making decisions, so you are free to develop your protagonist in several directions. As a very fast reader, it took me about an hour to play the whole game; I imagine folks who struggle with large blocks of text will have a much harder go of things. Good replay value due to the complexity of the branching story.

This was a exciting and well paced text adventure game. I look forward to more from this author.

I'm currently on the fourth chapter and, as someone studying theatre, I am in love with this game. Slightly disappointed that it does not include my favorite playwright, Tennessee Williams, but then again he was not alive at this time. Perhaps you could make a second one WITH Tennessee Williams. I am also very much in love with his play "The Glass Menagerie." If you could make a sequel that has influences and appearances of playwrights in the era of American Realism, such as Tennessee Williams, I would definitely buy it. Perhaps "Broadway: 1949"? Or "Broadway: 1944"?

A surprisingly well-written and responsive game. Broadway: 1849 is a fun and pulpy period piece that while stumbling with believability at times is generally a well-crafted and well-paced game. There's plenty of choice here and it does feel rewarding when you make things go your way, and the book is best at the beginning and end since the middle does slump a bit in quality. Overall it was good, the characters were largely memorable but I do wish we got to see a little more real development with them, only Miller and Nell really get a lot of development but the others are still nice for what they have. The epilogue was a tad bit long but still a good sendoff and I didn't actually notice many typos in the game which is quite rare for these games. Around 6-7 hours of fun, I'd give it a read even if it doesn't fully pay off everything its still a good book.

A very interesting and novel game, Enjoyed the use of real historical figures, gangs and landmarks. A handful of bugs toward the end, but nothing that ruins the game. Written extremely well. Could do with more choices, but overall really enjoyed it.
