Before I say anything else, by default, the rotation on the character is very strange, but you can change it in the settings to a more traditional feel. I decided to play it on a keyboard with additional adjustments on the mapping, it was okay, you just need to improve the timing on the shield, dash, and maybe a melee as well. Now, if I understood the credits correctly, the game is mostly made by one developer with some additional support, so in that sense, it's not a bad showing and something to be proud of, but in this condition, it's hard to justify $10 for it. It only has about 3 hours of story content, I am surprised you didn't go with early access, it's too short. You also credited a lot of tools/assets, and I understand the need for it, but from my perspective, the more you rely on those, the less genuine the experience is for the player. I hope you at least made all of the stages with the elevation, I actually think the game does not look all that bad, even though the world-building didn't feel all that interesting. It kinda has that 'cookie-cutter' gameplay and combat, it's not necessarily a bad thing, but I didn't find the delays on the actions all that friendly. A good example is your dash-based platforming, which is pretty horrible in this game. I often get a sense that normal dash distance is too short so I try to time it in the air, but you quickly realize it just does not work. An easy solution might be to just give the player more control over dash distance, maybe make it a bit longer too, but if you wanted to go a bit deeper, maybe some mid-air control so falling down a little was not always a fail - perhaps an auto hop near the edges. Okay so the stage design was not terrible, maybe a bit too linear, you want to give the player more chances to explore, but I like that you tried to create some elevation, and occasionally jump down, actually could have used more of that. The aesthetic was okay, but the consistency suffered as it went on, the stages became pretty blurry toward the end, I kinda felt like you started to give up. Honestly, the story had no impact on me at all, feels too scripted, too much like following a path. Maybe you could have more recurring characters that come and go, try to build that attachment, and then you can turn them into friends or enemies at some point, give some special things for completing those arks.
Pros:
(+) I mean, I think you like 75% there on many things, combat is almost serviceable, the level design is almost serviceable, and the narrative is almost serviceable. You should have worked more on the game before putting it out, it's not terrible, but it's not finished, feels just like a naked core of a game.
Feedback:
Timing - I think you can make the character a little faster, maybe 20%, see how it feels and go from there. I think the shield should pop a little faster too, I had a hard time doing reflection because of the slow delay on it. Dash platforming feels off, visually it feels like you should run into the abyss and then dash, instead of just making it pixel perfect, something needs to be done to combat it, maybe a longer dash with player control or edge hops, or maybe the character should not fall instantly, give like a 0.3-second mid-air movement so you can actually time it safely. Melee attacks feel kinda trashy, you don't want to give the character a little combo? Sometimes the game glitches out when you get power-ups, but you can fix it by dying. Perhaps the shield should also properly block melee enemies, if it does, I did not see it. Almost forgot*, that slow mo effect that many games do, yea it works if the game is like super polished and it's cool when timed perfectly, but in this game it feels like lag, so I don't know, I would say be careful doing fancy effects like that, they don't feel as good as you might think, I often can't tell if the game is doing it or if I am getting an FPS drop. Stage Design - what you doing is okay, I think you need to give the player more freedom to explore, have more optional locations. The aesthetic quality felt uneven, toward the end you made it very blurry. Honestly, you could even color-swap it more, it would probably look more fun if you had more visual themes, even if you made them a bit more colorful. I like what you doing with elevation, probably could use more of that with the geometric structures and climbing them, also jumping down more. Narrative - I guess, try to approach your world as if the character were living in it, maybe have more characters that populate it and interact with you, maybe the hub locations more interesting, have some rewards associated with that, have more mystery and lore, you don't want it to feel like a story on the rails. Content - too short, too many recycled enemies. Overall Thoughts: 5/10 Not a bad effort honestly, you probably could work with this, take advantage of the player's desire to explore, try to make the world more interesting to navigate, and add more characters that "live" in the world. As far as the gameplay, it's not awful but you want to make it a bit more snappy, make it more fluid, it's better to make the game faster than slower, increase the movement speed, shorten delays on melee, and make dash platforming more reliable. Can confirm, works pretty well on Steam Deck so far. 1280 x 720p seems to run at 800p instead somehow, no complaints there max settings, introduction is at 30fps and settles into a generally stable 60fps I wish the deadzone for diagonal movement was a little slimmer I’m playing on default difficulty; so far the game feels a bit “easy,” in that health upgrades are too quick and I have too many tools to fight enemies. Health drops too often, too. Right when I was feeling like the challenge was going to kick in, I got a machine-gun style of ability that cheesed it down to nil. My teleport dodge has no cooldown, and it’s not tied to my Spark bar. Falling off an edge doesn’t damage me, it just ticks my Spark a little I guess? Some of that could be creative decisions, but altogether it can really impact early game. You don’t have to be afraid to progress, but the future unknowns should at least promise challenge and perils. Next I’ll tinker with the difficulty options.
I dont usually go reviewing games only after 30min but this one was a rather pleasant surprise! the mechanics are simple, dash and fire and block. I honestly had no clue where i was going but the more and more enemies that came out the more fun it was... its a simple game and yes for a single dev its a great job. The visuals sound and flow of motion was far smoother than you would expect from a single person production! SO far i would recommend this game... if that changes i will be sure to update this! Edit: Had no performance issues myself on my 5700xt but this game needs a map ... i am at a pt where i dont know what i am doing or where i am suppose to go ...
This game is awesome! The art and combat were fantastic and I felt that the story was pretty engaging. The boss battles are definitely the best part of this game I just wish it was longer. My run time says 4 but really it was closer to 3. Hopefully this developer keeps making games as I feel they have a ton of potential in making the next smash indie hit. Here's a link to my review that goes into it in more depth: https://youtu.be/Sa1yuPI3Wb8
saw it on reddit. great work!
Highly recommend this game for anyone who enjoys difficult, fast-paced combat (if you're having trouble adjusting to the movement controls, they can be changed in the settings). Timing the attacks and shield is very fluid and feels natural. Paired with the awesome visuals you are in for a a very rewarding treat.
Really fun, short game with great visuals, action, cutscenes and lot of work put into it by this solo dev. Looking forward to more games!
