Nostalgic and fun especially fishing
I loved this game back when it originally came out and this release captures the nostalgia. Just know this is a direct port and there are no auto saves to fall back on, and it does seem to crash unexpectantly. The first two crashes were too bad as in I did not lose too much progress but this last one...over an hour of play time gone...So just be weary! Save early, save often, and save again!
Dragonman.EXE
The thing that caught me by surprise about Breath of Fire IV is that it's the predecessor to the Megaman Battle Network games! The artstyle, the way the textbox and character portraits are presented, the isometric perspective, even the combo system is precursor to Program Advance. Just look at the main antagonist Fou-Lu, and tell me he's not just Protoman without his helmet on. As a lifelong fan of those games, this detail made me giddy indeed. Anyway, a nice little RPG this game is. The story's alrite, there's actually a shocking moment later on, and it hit me on the head quite a tad. The artstyle is definitely the best part of this game, especially all the 2D sprites stuff. The dragons're great, most of them are visually interesting to look at, though they do be stretching the definition of what a dragon is, which's still great. The main cast are alrite, sufficient enough for you to care about the main trio at least, they're shallow enough for the players to fill in the blanks. The turn-based combat is kinda neat, the magic combo system is exciting to use, anything resembling Chrono Trigger's Double Tech is great in my book. The dungeoning and level design; they're frictionless but they did their best to vary up the environment and how you interact with it. I get the intention behind the mandatory minigames, but not all of them are homeruns. The camera didn't frustrate me as much, but i can see why it does for other players. I'll hard recommend to dragon fans, especially the ones of Monster Hunter persuasion. If you like RPG history, this game is a good case study. It's not the greatest thing ever, the game's tiny bit dated but there's a lot of fun stuff in it. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is carrying Breath of Fire's torch at this point, and I don't know if Capcom would make a proper full-scale Breath of Fire RPG. They're kinda busy with MH Wilds and Dragon's Dogma 2, which are great that those games are still supported. I guess we fans can only keep the breath of fire alive.
You can see Deis buttcrack in this game holy snap
I love this game, truly, but how can a port in 2026 be worse than the PS1 version? Especially decades after. Some basic things should be included for Steam. Cloud Saves/Achievements to be two major ones. The filtering makes the otherwise beautiful sprites look like a matte watercolor smoothing and just throws off the whole artistic feel. The font replacement is odd and distracting. The sound seems muted, like flat. I can't really explain it but it seems worse than I remember. Really awkward input configurated, especially for a controller. You have to use an attached USB cable to a Dualsense and even an Xbox controller feels odd and had a crash when my controller went to sleep. Lost some small early game progression. DRM is a factor to consider as well. Would I recommend this game, absolutely, the game is one of the best on the PS1... this version, in this state... I just can't. If you can overlook the sprite, sound, font, and input issues then yes. Get the game. I just can't. GOG seems to be the better way to play it or even an original PS1 with a CRTV.

It's a good game but I don't feel like the masters had much of an impact
Its ok. Not as good as the other Breath of Fires. Specially 1 and 2 on the Super Nintendo. Its an extremely slow start but it does get a little better. Combat and the animations are pretty good. the combo system and the master system is a little weird though. One thing that is extremely annoying is constantly having to stop moving in order to turn the camera so you can see where you are going. And the Dialogue with Fou-Lu (the obviously ancient Chinese inspired dragon emperor) is just so bad and often difficult to read. Think of someone in a show speaking in the most exaggerated way from medieval England. I recommend it because despite its flaws it is actually a pretty good game (just very slow, even by JRPG standards) and when they are speaking normally the dialogue is pretty good.
It doesnt do anything amazingly but also doesn't do anything poorly, and when all is said and done it manages to be greater than the sum of its parts. Very unique vibes. 8.3/10
