Fun, silly adventure game. Some voices were changed from the original, which is a shame, but still great fun. Ran well on Linux.
The original Brain Hotel was the first Pinhead Games flash game I played back on their site over 13 or more years ago. I was excited to see it was getting a remake and really kick myself for never hearing about it's Kickstarter last year so I could pledge. That being said, I'd recommend this but with a heavy asterisk: "This game is essentially like the original. Save for a new NPC, some new voicelines and a puzzle or two that have been altered; you'll be doing the same stuff as the older flash game." Some oddities: Some VO is recycled from the original while others are redubbed. This is a bit more miss than hit. Ed's new VO sounds alright for doing some more extended lines here and there so I get why they recast him but why Impo? His new voice sounds like the dude did everything in one take compared to the different inflections the VO from the original did. Not to mention, it still uses his old voice for the elevator exit gags. Why not just use the old lines? There's nothing new that would call for a redub as far as I can tell. There's also no graphical settings you can tweak unless there's a launcher in the game dir. Had to play the game in like 640x480 fullscreened or something. I'd recommend this if you liked the original, want to support the creators of the original and can't be assed to find a way to play the old flash version.
I spent an hour completing this game. In the original Brain Hotel, there was a plutonium vial - you could obtain it by giving the radioactive label torn from Botsmith to the bartender. However, in this version, the label isn't interactive. When trying to request plutonium through dialogue with the bartender, the original "So what am I allowed to have?" option is missing. The Robot 6 requires five items, with plutonium being the missing one. Submitting the phone twice completes the robot's requirements. Walkthrough: Take towel from elevator cabinet → Give towel to pool woman → Give received coin to Impo → Submit phone from Impo to Robot 6. Repeat this process twice for dual submissions. One mechanic better implemented in the original was automatic dialogue initiation by clicking characters, whereas this version requires clicking "TALK" then selecting characters, which feels cumbersome. Overall experience was good. The ending notably expands on how Ed Arnold defeated Judge Mental using pool water mixed with ammonia, including scientific explanations absent in the original.
