Hi, Since the change to the targets several weeks ago, it has been difficult to use the game because of my color blindness. How difficult would it be for the developer to let the user choose what they want the targets to look like? For me, I must humbly say that the original targets were much easier; but that is based on my color blindness. Developers, can the user have the option to select a theme for the targets? At least with the option to use the older styles? I'd like to keep playing this game as part of my cardio workout. Thanks, Gene
First of all, I -DO- recommend BOXVR even though I submitted for a refund in the first 30 minutes. I gave it another shot and I've got tips to help you get it working! It's a great workout. I'm pretty confident at the rate of the calorie counter. I keep playing it, and I've put in at least 5 hours this week since purchasing. as a -Workout- with fun game elements "9/10"- definitely as a stand alone game? "5/10" - Maybe. INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING TO GET WORKING ONCE DOWNLOADED. I requested a refund after the first incredibly frustrating 30 minutes trying to get this thing to work. I then searched everywhere online to find solutions to my problem but came back empty handed seeing that most people were complaining about all the same issues with no solutions. Apparently there's been a recent update that removed some functionality, yaddida yadda I'm new to this so I don't have opinions of past builds. Finally I logged back in, and after another 30 minutes of trial and error I was FINALLY able to start having some fun in this, and I definitely got a good workout, which is why I bought this in the first place. I removed my refund request, and now I'd like to share some solutions I found to common issues. Necessary Mindset: This isn't a game, it is a fitness tool. It's finally working and so I'm keeping it. 1.) The #1 reason I'd have thrown this out the window if I had a physical copy of this game during my initial play experience. NOTHING CONNECTS!!!!! I'm not mike tyson but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I know when I'm getting screwed by the game and not my own ability. SO WHY IS THERE A 50ns Latency UNVIEWABLE in any menu except when you PAUSE while PLAYING???? ------>>> This solved 80% of my issues once uncovered. <------ After trying desperately to figure out why I wasn't connecting with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ anything and being RIGHTLY frustrated that despite my honest to god efforts I was missing shots I SHOULD HAVE HIT and having it actually be the games fault and not just me needing to Git Gud, I figured out that if you: - PAUSE THE GAME DURING A SONG - Then you have the option to reduce controller Latenecy, which is natively set to 50 something NS, either Up or Down. I set my Latency to - ZERO -.... Now I actually hit stuff!!! -Check my Achievements and you can see I have a 500 hit combo award- I've since tweeked it up to between "5-10ns" but I'm not sure if the improvement is software or just placebo from me getting better. 2.) Set graphics to FASTEST Not anything high quality. This is not a game about graphics, it's a Cardio Boxing Workout game and arguably high accuracy vs graphical quality is the best way to play. If you want a game with slicker graphics but that's less of a workout get Beat Saber or something. 3.) Yes it takes forever to load up songs, it's a pain that the best folder location to store songs you want to play in the game is a new folder on your desktop apparently, and I tried several locations, but it's definitely working. It's also way easier than people were making it sound. Considering that a play session will last you 30 min to 1 hour, it's not like you need 1000 songs. Pick a few dozen of your favorites from wherever you store your music and copy paste them into the new folder. - Once you get the songs you want to play in game into a folder specifically for the game, make a playlist with every single song and wait for the game to process them. - After this the game will remember them forever, regardless of if you delete them or add them to new playlists as long as you don't move them from the new folder. Doing this in large chunks of 10+ songs at a time will save you time in the long run, after the initial processing you can quickly add or remove them from playlists. 4.) WTF is up with the glove calibration? There's no way to reset and I honest to god can't figure out if what I have them at right now is ideal or not. IT FEELS right to have my knuckles on each hand line up with the front face of the gloves and I seem to have high accuracy this way but with no directions or suggestions from the developers I've been able to find.... well I just can't tell you for sure. Not a fan that they just freely float around you in random orientations and you have to somehow guess if your wrist or thumb are lining up... I probably never would have changed them had I know they would never freaking reset. Imagine my surprise the first time I entered that specific menu and watched my hand fly away from my glove at a crazy angle and then try to position it back to a sensible orientation in three dimensional space without being able to see my actual hand, wrist or arm! FUN FUN FUN. Minor Complaints otherwise? I don't know if the developers will read this but I hope in the future they add more Stages, I mean seriously how hard can it be to make some more random Techno Synth-wave Cyberpunk stages? It'd be dope to have one in a Fantasy Dungeon, or in a back ally of Neo-Tokyo's Shipping district right before a hover-motorcycle race, on maybe the stage of a huge Space Rave where in the future DJ's punch music for sport. THEY CAN BE DUMB or PLAYED OUT, I DON'T CARE, because after playing the hallway of glowing arches a couple dozen times, and then the 80's Synthwave album cover a couple dozen times, I'm left both getting bored of my surrounding yet completely uninterested in the other options. Just answer this question: Why would I want to put on a virtual reality headset to punch glowing lights in a 24 hour fitness???? WHEN I COULD BE ON MARS!?!? Random Tip! I bought a "Welding head cap" from a local welding supply store for 4 bucks. It soaks up a lot of the sweet that would otherwise be going to my headband and forehead portion of my eyemask. Might be worth looking into. I'm thinking of ordering some weighted Aerobic Bracelets off Amazon to kick this up to the next level. Final point: If you want a workout, this is the best VR workout I've ever played. It is a better workout than either Space Pirate Trainer or Beat Saber. Once you screw around enough you can get the controls and hit detection to work just fine. Hopefully the developers work to make this playable right away instead of begrudgingly after more than an hour of trial and error. Anyway, Guys, if you have a VR headset and you've read this far, I believe in you. I think you can figure out how to tweek these setting yourself so this game becomes really fun. When you first try to play you are going to be frustrated. It isn't your fault, go spend some time tweaking the settings and you'll be kicking ass soon. VR is the opportunity for many of us with weight and activity issues to have fun and get moving. There are a ton of sit down games or wrist twirly whirly games, BOX VR is going to test you and get you sweating. You'll have fun and start burning some calories. I've gotten off my butt 5 more hours this week than I normally would have, and that's gonna add up.
BoxVR is becoming a regular in my daily workout routine. It is fun, engaging, gets you sweating and most importantly, responsive in the controls. That said, I would love to see some improvements to the game to make it more user-friendly. 1. Most of the music if bloody awful. I know this likely comes down to a licensing issue, so the game can remain relatively well priced, but damn if I haven't absolutely lost interest in a workout by the dull or uninteresting music in a session. 2. There is no way to indicate how challenging a song/workout is. All workouts are listed by time instead of a challenge rating. The DLCs added ones that are more challenging than others, but there is no way to sift through workouts by how difficult they are. Longer time does not equal harder. In creating my own playlist using the available songs, there is no way to create a super challenging workout unless you physically play the song and keep track of what was good and what wasn't. Even when setting all songs to a hard difficult, you may end up with some winners and losers unless you know which songs are good depending on the challenge you're looking for. I would suggest adding a challenge rating system for all songs in the create workout session. 3. More customization would be nice. Glove color, environments, UI settings. Just to add some flavor and immersion. I know this is not the aim of the game, but it would be nice to customize some settings. Looking at the same three environments gets old after awhile.
Developers of this game are the most greedy I ever known. I bought the game on PC with a high price but lot of promises. They launch the game on Oculus and forgot about PC and all features promised. Now, in Oculus, they did the same and launch the suscription model. 9.99$ month? What they think are offering? It's more expensive than Netflix average subscription! And absolutely unjustified. It's the problem when business companies jump in games market Avoid supporting this kind of behaviours.
Game was abandoned for FITXR, a subscription VR fitness service.
Score: 6/10 The base concept of this game is great - BOXVR provides a super intensive cardio exercise option right in the comfort of your own home. I played consistently for a couple of weeks earlier this year and really enjoyed it. Here are some of the great things about this game: [olist] [*]Simple, easy-to-pick-up game play. Colored orbs for your left and right hands fly at you and you must take the correct action depending on the type of orb that is presented. Really intuitive. I had a couple of friends try it out and they got the hang of it right away. [*]I liked the aesthetic of the environments in-game, like the locker room area when you first load it up. Cool ambiance. [*]When in a workout, the UI is always in view and is pretty easy to read, even when you're caught up in the level. [*]Exercise + Gaming is always a winning combo for me. I respond well to gamification, especially when it comes to my well-being! [/olist] ------------------------------------------------------------- Looking back, I think I stopped playing for the following reasons: [olist] [*]The music was just alright. There were a couple of songs I really liked to jam to in there, but I would always forget the names. And trying to put together a playlist in game was really difficult. So I always felt kinda blah about that. [*]Figuring out what to do with each orb was easy, but trying to figure out how the game was registering it was annoying. Sometimes my streaks would get messed up and I had no idea what I was doing wrong. I was still getting good exercise, but I can't help but try and understand how the game works so I can focus on improving. [*]It does not appear like the game is being consistently updated. The big last update (from the time of this review) was one year ago and the store page does not seem to have been updated since then. [*]The game is just missing that "oomph" or that "Wow!" factor. Little things like menu navigation, the UI outside of workouts, lack of customization options, etc, just fall flat for me. With some devoted attention, this game could really be something spectacular. Adding things like rewards or leveling, player avatars, some paid music packs, more environments, some courses to explain the fundamentals of boxing, could really improve the vibe of this game and revive its staleness. It feels very professional and clinical, which is great, but if there are not enough compelling game-like aspects included, I may as well just buy a punching bag and avoid sweating all over my VR headset. [*]Cumbersome "barrier to entry," so to speak. This isn't necessarily this game's fault, but I think it's worth noting. I loved the sweat I got from playing, but honestly, wearing a VR headset while trying to exercise is not very comfortable and most of the sweat was caused purely by the presence of the bulky device strapped to my noggin. Not to mention, the time spent setting it up and getting prepped. If I only feel motivated to exercise for a 30 minute window, spending 5-10 minutes of that time messing with the equipment and settings really eats away at that time. And if any technical issues came up, man...I would just get frustrated and lose all my initial motivation. Again, this specific point is not being factored into my opinion of this game, but I thought it was important to call out. Maybe there is something VR game developers or headset manufacturers can do in the future to address this, as this is probably the biggest reason why I stopped playing. [/olist] ------------------------------------------------------------- Anyways, thanks for sticking around to the end. I still recommend this game to anyone interested in mixing some exercise in with their gaming! As of December 2020, we're still in a pandemic, so whatever exercise games you can get while we continue to quarantine is a worthy purchase in my book. BOXVR is not a bad choice and you should give it a shot! :-) ...But maybe wait for it to go on sale first because $30 USD is a bit steep for its current state.
To make this game 200% better and 500% harder attach resistance bands from belt to hands, you can buy ones for boxing. Enter 30min work out. Pray to whatever God you choose, because none will save you.
Half an hour of this game 5 days a week and I'm down almost 10 pounds in just over a month. Solid game, although there are a few issues for sure. There 100% needs to be a way to see how hard the workout you are selecting is. They tell you the length and who created it (no one cares what person created the workout, yet that is like a third of the info provided on the selection screen) but it would be super nice to know what intensity it is, if it focused on arms or squats or both, what songs are in it (since there are a few I cant stand) etc. I hate that I have to keep notes on the workouts on a piece of paper and refer to that (meaning you need to keep removing your headset to do this), since hardly any info is actually listed about them in game when selecting. Also, it shows you the percentage of notes you hit in the past, but it would be really nice if it could track how many punches you actually missed? Sometimes I miss 15-20 hits, and sometimes I miss just one, and those both usually count as 99% runs. It would be nice if it told you hey, youve done this 20 minute workout and only missed one punch, or 10 punches, etc. rather than having almost all my workouts at 99% (while some I'm much better at than others). That being said, I'm losing weight using it regularly, so I'm still going to recommend it even with some shortcomings.
The developers have completely abandoned this game - and that's a GOOD thing!!! FitXR (as it's known on Oculus) is a complete mess. They've removed environments, gave the game a generic futuristic look, made the coaches talk non-stop, gave the combo system a frustrating overhaul, moved to a subscription based model, and (worst of all) removed the ability to add your own music to workouts!!! Trust me when I say we don't want the devs messing with BoxVR at all - I hope it's never updated! Pick this fitness game up during a sale only. You can get the full game and both the DLCs for half price. $25 is well worth the price of THIS version of the fitness game.
DO. NOT. BUY. This game is a prime example of a bait and switch. A significant amount of features promised on the actual store page are simply not available/ broken or have been removed in the attempt to rebrand and take your money. Developers are greedy and have chosen to abandon the game in exchange for a quick cashgrab, rebranding to FitXR and abandoning all development of the game as was promised when it was BoxVR. Features that were promised either did not work ( and still don't ), have been removed altogether or are put behind a subscription paywall. Example of the bait and switch: Custom songs first of all never properly worked, were promised to be fixed, followed by being completely ignored. Criticism about broken features on their discord is either ignored or followed by a ban. They do not care about their playerbase, their community management is laughable. Spend your money on one of many competitors, as this is a complete waste of your time and money with other, better, games around. DO. NOT. BUY.
