"Bolide" is a garbage tier amateur GameMaker Studio arcade shoot 'em up with no meaningful gameplay, a trite and pointless progression tree, and appalling P2W DLC monetisation... which is largely irrelevant because this was such a huge failure nobody bothered playing it. And I can see why based on my experience. It's bad, real bad. What do you do in the game? It's an arcade shoot 'em up, only worse. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality product, this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me. The developer chose not to do the job of a real game developer and create meaningful bespoke levels, narrative based gameplay progression and so on. Instead, they decided that "Procgen IS content!" and lazily tried to use procgen algorithms to create infinite, samey, repetitive, soulless levels, because that's a lot less work. As a result of this poor decision, the game gets tired and repetitive almost immediately. Developers must learn that procgen is a terrible substitute for creating real content. It should not be used as "ez-mode" for content creation, as the developer tried to do here. Also, shoot 'em ups rely very strictly on level design as part of the game flow as gamers succeed in this games by learning the bullet patterns and encounters... removing that from the game shows a complete failure to understand the basic premise behind shoot 'em ups and bullet hell games. But we've already established this was a complete failure. That's just one more reason why. On the important matter of pricing and value for gamers, there's a lot going on here with monetisation, so this really shouldn't be considered a truly free product because of that. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging $4 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. Even after that, you're expected to pay up $8 USD to unlock P2W "content" (superior ships and an XP boos) through DLC purchases. The game should not be considered completely unlocked until you empty your wallet for the developer. This is misleading and predatory pricing on a product falsely marketed as "free". Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 2 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Once more I'm proud to see gamers rejecting garbage, as they should. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money, I still feel ripped off.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer breaches Valve guidelines to tell outright lies about their garbage, failed game. And it most certainly is a failure... with only 2 concurrent players, and that only happening once, this is the textbook definition of incompetence in game development of the highest order. SteamDB does not lie, this is not just my opinion, it's fact. The developer lies about the game being free, it is not, my review clearly outlines that content is locked behind paid DLC. The developer lies and seeks to mislead gamers for profit. The developer lies about the content of the DLC... double XP for players is an indisputable advantage. The developers appalling breach of Valve guidelines and direct dishonesty, intended to mislead gamers for profit, reveals so much of their toxic attitude. No wonder this was such a failure. Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the objective facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I cannot recommend this failure to anyone.
