I've never had a chance to race chickens before, so you can imagine how happy I was to try it for the first time in Bock Bock. Its approach to gambling is different and funny, but not enough to save it from a number of weaknesses.
This is a 3D game, and while the designs aren't anything amazing, they are good enough to give the game an inviting, cartoony look. However, when you start playing for real (joining a server and placing bets), you will be taken to a very ugly arena. The floor is some kind of stock texture, the clouds are made of a stretched, non-moving cloud cover, and basically, it's just really empty. There's nothing interesting to see. Contrast that to the landing screen with a chicken coop, trees, and mountains, and it really stands out.
Bock Bock has some minor glitches, too. None of them are game-breaking, and are more funny than annoying, but they're still very noticeable. For example, if you open the settings menu while you are in the game lobby (where you place bets and so forth), you will be able to see the chicken right through the window. Or when you are in a race, if you have given a buff to a chicken, it doesn't stop at the finish line, continuing to run right into the arena walls. These are little things but they take away from the polish of the game.
Bock Bock's biggest problem is that it is way too repetitive. Every single race is the same thing. There are no new upgrades, no unlockable characters or skins, no new racing arenas, no higher difficulties. After about half an hour, there's really nothing more to see or do in the game. Every race comes down to buying nerfs and buffs: Buff the chicken you want to win, nerf the chickens you want to lose. These effects are so strong, it doesn't matter which chicken you use them on, even the weakest will become the champion as long as you use them on every participant. This takes out any challenge to the game, which leads to boredom very quickly.
In the end, it's hard to recommend Bock Bock unless it's on a very deep sale. It's more of a collector's item at this time, unless the developer can add content, improve the graphics, and add more depth to the gameplay other than clicking through a few windows between each race. Proceed with caution.
