You have been part of something terrible, something so unspeakable that caused you to blackout and forget all the events from the past few days. Now you are faced with the choice of going after the truth, facing the shadows that hide within our world, or trying to forget and leave all this behind.

Adoro a apresentação do jogo.
A fun little choose your own adventure game, with some lovely art and a decent amount of options to encourage replayability. Think my first playthrough took about an hour and a half, with my second about an hour as I skipped what I'd seen already.
I was enjoying this quite a bit at first. The fragmented-memory structure, jigsaw-style flashbacks and general presentation made the story feel like something I had to actively reconstruct, which suited the premise really well. Unfortunately, the branching eventually broke my trust in the narrative. In my playthrough, I went to the hospital, spoke to the doctor friend, and was told that my wife was in a coma. I then went home, slept, and received a phone call from the same doctor asking where I had been for the past four days, speaking as though our hospital conversation had never happened. The protagonist did not acknowledge this contradiction at all. Shortly afterwards, the game suddenly moved into an epilogue where my wife was apparently fine again. I understand that the game is deliberately nonlinear and that different choices can change the order of locations and lead to different endings. That is not the problem. In a story built around memory loss and fragmented chronology, continuity matters even more than usual. If the game presents a contradiction, the player needs to know whether it is an intentional part of the mystery or whether the branching logic has simply failed to account for an earlier scene. Here, it felt like two incompatible branches had been stitched together without the necessary connective writing. That is especially frustrating because the game had already trained me to pay close attention to inconsistencies and missing information. Once I realised that some inconsistencies might simply be continuity errors, the central mystery stopped feeling fair. There is a lot here that I liked, and I think the underlying idea is strong, but a branching narrative has to remain coherent across the routes it allows the player to take. My playthrough did not.

Usually my rule of thumb is that "1€ paid must equal 1 hour played". I just finished my first playthrough of this partially comic-book style visual novel in less than 70 minutes and got the first of six endings, so Blackout falls a bit shy on that rule. However, there are different endings and choices matter, so there is still some game to explore. I will probably return to the game to get some more endings, but I still wanted to drop a short review -- considering the game has been out for 2 years and only has a dozen reviews, it sure needs the attention. Overall I would consider this a decent visual novel with an interesting premise and execution. It is quite short, though, all things considered, so you should only get it on sale, even if you are willing to spend additional playthroughs to get the whole picture. As I wrote initially, I have not done that yet but am probably going to, but I also know from my own experience that not everyone likes multiple playthroughs. So, just consider that you are only going to be playing for 60-90 minutes or so before seeing the ending.
