Beautiful artwork and nice soundtrack/ambiance. The game is short, which would be fine but there's no context or elaboration for those unfamiliar with HP Lovecraft's mythos -- a major flaw considering the game centers around one of his deities by name and borrows other elements directly. At the same time it doesn't bring anything new to the mythos either, just borrows one of the big name Old Ones to package a typical "expedition team is waylaid by evil in a mysterious temple venerated by natives" plotline without much depth. Overall a meh experience.
Achievments didn't seem to work for me, other than that thumbs up. Last Threshold is a dark lovecraftian horror mystery created with passion, amazing artworks, atmospheric music aswell as a short, yet entertaining story - ready to be unfolded. Enjoyed every bit of it.
Last Threshold is not a game, it's an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. The developer decided to exhume H.P. Lovecraft and insult him before dumping him back in his grave here. Garbage E-books like this that despoil great works that have entered the public domain almost make me want to side with Disney on trying to kill the public domain completely. Anyway, this is basically a crap H.P. Lovecraft fanfiction, only set in Russia. As with most E-books on Steam, this is a picture book, because let's face it, e-books on Steam are written in a universally godawful way, so you might as well have some pictures to look at, right? (Yeah, I know, Steam isn't Instagram, and nor should it be, despite the efforts of these e-book "authors". Unfortunately, the artwork here is terrible, it's a hodge-podge of amateurish "My First Wacom Tablet" style drawings used instead professional looking game assets. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can create graphical assets properly, or lack of talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low, enough on its own to deter gamers. Visual novels/e-books are tedious at best... imagine the best novel you ever read, be that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey or Twilight (if you have terrible taste in literature), but then translate that to a format where the words dribble out and you have to click your mouse every time you wanted to read the next sentence, instead of just turning the pages. You'd think it was garbage. Now imagine that experience, but with much worse writing (because if these guys could write professionally, they'd be published authors and this would be on shelves in bookstores, and they wouldn't have to pay Valve $100 to self-publish this on Steam), and you have your average Steam e-book. You can get better quality books and comics for free online or from public libraries, or from bookstores for a fraction of the price of this "game". Steam isn't a comic book store, neither is it Netflix, it's for games. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle. It's impossible for me to recommend things to PC gamers that aren't really games. The poor quality of this E-Book is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak reader number was only 5 readers. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only reader activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality E-Book is to be expected. Last Threshold has the pathetically optimistic price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
Profile Features Limited!
Valve have marked this E-Book as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the E-Book (to date). Until this status changes, this E-Book will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this E-Book.
Visual Novel is the best description. The story was fun but short and the choices didn't really seem important as you make them. The one puzzle was already in order, so not really a puzzle. I would recommend this game if you are looking for a fun story to read.
Pros Lovecraftian lore friendly. Madness done well. Artwork is great and fits the atmosphere. Sound design and ambient music was great. Cons No Voice acting. Shorter than I would have hoped. Very few actual choices. I definitely recommend it checking it out for the very modest price it's going for.
Jedno przejście to około godziny czasu, poznanie trzech zakończeń to jakieś półtorej godziny.
too short, choice no matter till the end. Still game has a good atmosphere and beautfiul arts. I wish steam has a mixed option for review. Still thumbs up, because I believe the studion can do something amazing with their upcoming next title.
Kind of boring and also too short.
Very simple, but quite engaging visual novel. Obviously, inspired by Lovecraftian mythos, gets the cosmic horror right. Art style is neat, but there’s some hit and miss visuals, especially in the finale. Panels are all drawn by hand, so props for that. Music and audio - definitely top notch. Unfortunately, there’s not many storyline choices. Only obvious ones leading to three endings. You can wrap up all achievements in around 1,5h … which can be a downside for some, but I appreciate short expierences. Still, I wouldn’t mind if Last Threshold had more meat on its bones.
