You have been part of something terrible, something so unspeakable that caused you to blackout and forget all the events from the past few days. Now you are faced with the choice of going after the truth, facing the shadows that hide within our world, or trying to forget and leave all this behind.

A very good choose-your-own-adventure gamebook, with some interesting writing. As you play through the game, there are some nice touches with comic-style panel pictures, a few character stats - that effect choices, some jig-saw puzzle solving, and a couple decent synth-tunes. The game expects multiple playthoughs - each taking a couple hours. I saw less than half the game content on my first attempt, yet, I did not play through the game again. It will be a while before I play through the game again, because it is too slow paced for me to read through that the same story. I enjoyed learning about the "man in a hat" on an ubuntu linux desktop computer. I had no technical issues.
Blackout: The Darkest Night is a Visual Novel in a comic book format and thats always nice to see in VN genre. The game has 5 endings that you get them by choosing different choices in different playthroughs, so in terms of replayability with have some hours to put on the game to see all endings. There is some puzzles that you put together to have some flashbacks of the past of your character. Blackout: The Darkest Night is a great Visual Novel and if you like Visual Novels i recommend to buy because you gonna have a good time. It has my recommendation for solid writing and an intriguing little mystery, but the emphasis is on little. Maybe this was my bad luck, but I happened to get to the bottom of the mystery on my first playthrough, about 40 minutes in. I've played through it a few more times since then and while it's possible I've missed some side stories, and I haven't gotten a halfway "good" ending yet, without the central mystery to drive the plot my willingness to keep playing is mostly gone. Most branching narrative games in this vein lock the True Ending type story behind a few playthroughs for a reason. Again, good writing, solid characterization, neat locations, polished presentation and a nice mystery at the core, but if you're in it for the story you can be done with it in half an hour. If that sounds like it's worth it, by all means buy this game!
If you enjoy reading it is a must have. It does a good job of tracking what you've done in previous paths to help you experience different things a long the way. The art is nice.
Enjoyable choose your own adventure game. The art/design is well done and fits the vibe. There are quite a few paths to take, so re-playability is good. The music and sound effects are lower quality than the rest of the game. Some of the paths do become a little compromised, continuity-wise, for example mentioning things later that you didn't experience earlier - so depending on the path you take the story can be fully coherent or a little incoherent, this isn't a major problem for most paths. Overall, it's a very good game, I always love a good choose you own adventure, and if you do too, you will likely enjoy Blackout.
A choose your own adventure with a nice look, interesting plot, and variety of choices to make. Good replayability with the ability to skip through puzzles you completed on previous attempts.
Badly written as a horror VN. Wastes too much time on animation. Starts with cold open, only to lose pacing with the flashback retrospection and puzzle. Sorry, I already recognize tricks authors used to extend the game length. Quick spotlights on the fragments of the one picture, only to repeat showing of the full picture? Slow showing of line-by-line fluff text? Nope, no dice. I do not have time for a VN that does not value my time to provide meaningful narrative.
A fine example of the genre. Well-executed and polished.
