My thoughts on BlackForge - An experience that's trying to do two things, and is ALMOST good at both seperately, but bad all in one package. The overall core gameplay idea is solid. you are a blacksmith, making weapons and tools for the surrounding towns and adventurers. The jobs unlock more materials and resources for you to work with. the messenger companion is a nice touch, and helps avoid the feeling some VR games have where you feel entirely alone the whole play through. The jobs don't force you to do them, some are required if you want new materials to work with, but none are gonna bark at you if you just wanna ♥♥♥♥ around and make stuff. But the making stuff is where it fails. The Core mechanics of crafting weapons, tools and the like rely far too heavily on physics based interactions, in a way that leaves my creations feeling sloppy, imprecise, and unsatisfying. comparing to games like township tale, that falls on the other end of the spectrum, pre-made molds with physics interactions for crafting, and attachment points for customization, this feels too sloppy, and could honestly do with a little more structure, because as is, it's not even due to a lack of skill in creation, but the pure imprecise interactions between physics objects, heck, i can't get the grindstone to work, period. There's not even any real hammer swinging, it feels like i'm playing with Township tale's carpentry mechanic, which while the physics have gotten better, i still to this day despise, and it's worse working with this game's metal reduction system, because it's damn near impossible to get any kind of desirable shape out of the metal. I love the fact that this game has an export 3D model function, but i unfortunately don't feel there's anything i could enjoy exporting that i could feesibly make with this janky and unsatisfying system. Ultimately this game delivers interesting story and mission mechanics packaged with lackluster and unsatisfying smithing and crafting. While i wish township tale's system gave me more creative freedom, i'll probably be returning to it for my blacksmithing enjoyment. I regret to say that i probably won't be playing this game again, because i can tell i will most likely end up being frustrated with my creations, especially as someone who is a 3D artist by trade. it's a damn shame because this was a Christmas gift from a friend.
Vive users beware. At the time of writing this, vive controllers do not work with the game, as you are unable to move. For the time being, when reading in their discord, the developers currently won't address this, because of other bugs.
Gets real boring real fast. After making/repairing a broken spearhead 4 or 5 times, I just had enough. I just don't have the patience or time to grind out the same orders over and over again. I felt the progression to be way too slow. The crafting isn't satisfying in any way. The tools are just too unforgiving. I struggled to make anything worth looking at. In the end, I just crafted "good" enough items that would pass the requirements and forget about making it look nice. As long you pass whatever formula the game uses for a requirement of the order, your good to go. This makes for sloppy craftsmanship as it doesn't matter what the item looks like. You can get "trinkets" to add to the order but I'm not sure if they really do much. Also, the order request system is slow as it depends on the traveling merchant to place them and pick up orders. There were times I spent waiting with nothing to do because I finished the orders and had to wait on the traveling merchant to return. After 4 hours of frustration and boredom, I'm done. This game really needs a whole overhaul from crafting to progression. Maybe for a person that has more patience and time, this game would be good. The game did have some bugs. It would crash randomly. Tools would sometimes disappear or move under things. Pouring out metal would sometimes instantly cool down and have to be reheated.
promising but just too clunky to be able to properly enjoy
the game is fun but i cant progress i try to make things sharp or pointy but they always turn out blunt some how, i do everything right i use the right materials i use the sharping wheel but always blunt they need to fix the game and game is very laggy
Something about the way this game moves makes me intensely motion sick teleportation is significantly worse
Game is good at it's core: create weapons that are only limited by your imagination. But it's price tag and what you get for it feels unreasonable. Maybe if they fix the stupid crashes, awkward collision and image quality (90 fps feels choppy as hell on 90Hz, not smooth at all). At review time, the game is less polished than the abomination of a "Messer" I've created in it. It crashed after 70 minutes of gameplay and of course the game has no auto saving. Should I remind you that I could not figure out how to save/open the menu as I couldn't find any binding for it, nor any way to access a menu. Under these conditions, no sane human with standards for a video game would recommend this game. I'd wait a few updates and fixes and perhaps a 50%+ sale.
