In the dark, gloomy winter evenings when spring is yet out of reach and you are dangerously low on cookies, a new cute visual novel comes to save the day - and we all know that love and food are the ultimate cure for the bad mood. Want some sweet fluff today? Then let us dig our spoons right into the review to find out what kind of treat is waiting for us! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2764261929
What’s on The Menu, Doc?
🌹 When the game’s description says over-the-top, you’d better believe it. Unless you meet flower fairies and giant racoons on a daily basis, of course. Overall, the story itself is quite pleasant, full of light-hearted moments, and is exactly as it is advertised – a fun slice of life. It features many normal daily activities people have: from working in a restaurant to parties to scrolling through social networks to cooking and discussing food. Some scenes were corny, but others made me go into a full-blown aww mode. There are two things that seem iffy to me. First, the routes are not equally engaging.
It is just my opinion, but Rose is very underwhelming compared to the delightful whirlwind of emotions with Iris and Lily’s wholesome overload.
Second, the huge number of black-screen transitions (“two hours later”, “one good meal later”, “several days later”, etc) between scenes interferes with the story flow in several chapters. ⚜️Writing needs some time to get used to and seems over-the-place in earlier chapters, but it gets good development further on and brings up its casual charm to the fullest. I felt that the last chapter lacked some bits of competitive drama I was hoping for, though
the only exception was Lily’s route
. However, if you come to this visual novel specifically for some light and wholesome experience, then this is exactly what you will get. Fluff all around. 🌼Girls are really adorable, each in her own way. What is even better, they really care about each other and support the whole team, including our character. Lily is a naïve, sweet and surprisingly crafty (at times); Iris is a social media darling with tsundere tendencies and some good muscles to back them up; and Rose is a responsible workaholic with a heart of gold and not enough time to sleep. The protagonist comes across as an immature person at first, but grows more and more carrying and dedicated with each chapter. Side character rarely come to the story, but play their own important roles and do not feel out of place. As far as love relationships are concerned, I think they had good pacing. Neither too slow nor too fast, with enough time to learn more about your romantic interest, become actual friends and then move on to something deeper and more meaningful. It was really nice to see that girls are treated as a person with their own personality and interests and not just a plot device or a prop for the protagonist. There is one issue, though, that I will talk about later on. 🌹Lovely artwork and beautiful CGs (with some obligatory fanservice themes that are, thank God, not obnoxious and just add to the general cutesy setting). Oh, and mouth-watering food pictures, of course! ⚜️Partial voice acting plus some full lines for the main girls. And speaking of music, there were not that many tracks, which is noticeable as some repeat in every chapter, but they were all nice and quite upbeat. Created just the right vibes for this culinary adventure. 🌼Huge kudos for the text size settings. My eyes are very grateful <3 🌹You can play either as a boy or a girl and choose your character’s name. This a minor thing, but as a person who grew up on old-school stories (that featured an obligatory straight male protagonist most of the time), I do appreciate the ability to customize such things in visual novels. Also, there is a cute picture for your in-game persona in the dialogue box and small changes in the text here and there. ⚜️Some interactive parts like choosing a dish on the menu or participating in an Instasnap chat. Again, a very minor thing, but quite sweet. 🌼And the last but not least: a dog who is not only cute but also a food critic. You heard it here first, guys! A canine Gordon Ramsay. I just wish it had an avatar or a sprite of its own. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2764261224
I Want to Talk to Your Manager
With all these nice things being said above, there are several points that can be improved. 🥀While I enjoyed the writing in general, I would still like to voice a small concern: in my opinion, the pacing of the first several chapters is rather inconsistent. Sometimes, events happen really fast one after another – like during the first day, for example, - then they suddenly slow down and focus on very minor things (mind you, they are actually connected with girls’ interests later, but still…). 🥀I think the story would benefit from several more chapters or
at least a more dramatic ending
. In its current state, this visual novel lacks some kind of zest that could really make it stand out. 🥀The protagonist needs to tone down their obsession over Lily in the first two chapters. Seriously, they think about this waitress almost non-stop even though we have not even had a chance to select any specific romantic path yet (or had any real relationship-building events) – “Lily is cute, Lily has amazing personality, Lily remembers my name, I hope Lily wants to be my girlfriend”, etc. Dude, slow down and smell some flowers other than lilies, geez! 🥀Despite what I said about good relationship development before, our guy/gal tends to overfocus on their possible partner in general, to be completely honest. As soon as you start developing even the smallest kind of feelings between the protagonist and any girl, they immediately stop paying much attention to the other two and notice only details about their chosen one. This is most probably due to the game’s length – 6-8 hours is usually not enough for a more diverse build-up, so you just have to dive into one specific path almost right away. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2764258567
And The Winning Dish Is…
This visual novel looks really beautiful and has this cheeky charm that draws you in until the very end. It is particular pleasant if you want some good distraction from gloomy stuff that we all have been dealing with since 2020. Yes, Bistro Days has its cheesy moments, but romantic slice-of-life genre is generally full to the brim with this milk product, so it comes with the territory. My only recommendation is that you really should grab a tasty snack to help you along the way. The pictures are just too enticing. P.S. But if you ever, ever put bacon and whipped cream together…I swear, I will hunt you down and punish you in the name of all holy. P.P.S. Iris is the best gurl 💖
More reviews on our Curator Page
Bistro Days is a wholesome slice of life story mixed with some romance and a focus on cooking. The overall quality is really nice and I really liked the character design in particular. Writing and Translation are both great and the soundtrack sets a nice fitting atmosphere. The partial voice acting is kinda useless though as it really only happens very rarely which just kinda is weird then cause you are used to not having any and then suddenly you have a fully voiced sentence. If you are looking for a relaxing VN with some nice art and a medium length ( ~5 hours for one playthrough) then give this a try as it is priced very fairly.
Bistro Days
A Guide to InstaSnap royalty.
Preclaimer
- Thanks to the developer for offering a key! - Since many Visual Novels are similar in a bunch of ways, I'm gonna review this one on a few common aspects.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2764578322

Graphical & Technical Quality
Cute but solid. Playing newcomer indie Visual Novels is always like gambling - they could be good, they could be bad, a hidden gem or an inevitable catastrophy. That's why it's great that Bistro Days turned out a welcome treat during my personal VN release draught. Featuring a great and notably detailed 1080p artstyle with 2-frame animated blinking on the character sprites as well as a few innovative gimmicks rather scarcely seen on projects of this size, this game proved to be an enjoyable couple hours spend. Said gimmicks include emulated chat conversations, showcasing the daily life of a wannabe-influencer, partial voice acting and a heavily decision-driven plot with multiple endings. On top of those features, Bistro Days also breaks free of the commonly established shackles of the RenPy engine and includes handy gimmicks like TTS support for the unvoiced dialogue parts, a list of controls so you don't need to wildly test around and basic customization and font options, including font size. The dialogue has the least spelling mistakes I have seen on any VN yet, and the voice acting - despite myself not being a fan of English voice acting - was actually so enjoyable that it's a huge shame the game has so little of it. On the other hand of course, the game isn't perfect. Those cool auto-play chat conversations don't fare well with skipping (i.e. they are unskipable, being a major slowdown when setting up sub-sequent runs) and aside from the very little actual voice acting during CGs you only have a handful of generic "Yeah", "Huh", ... sounds playing often enough to become repetetive or even annoying. The same goes for the music - it is generally nice and fitting, though only has so little track variety that you will get to know every single one by heart at the end of run one, killing the mood in a few important scenes by switching too fast - or not at all - between the available tracks. (I'm especially looking at a certain emotional track during a certain scene at the end which is just, like, 4 looped samples. A great change - for the first 5 seconds.)
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2764577704

Content & Runtime
What can you expect from this game? Bistro Days features a generally cute and silly slice of life story featuring you, an aspiring food blogger, and the daily struggles in your life - the challenge of becoming an influencer, family problems, questioning life decisions, ... At some point you meet the three lovely girls that run "Bellflower Bistro", a bistro that tries to recover from its own past problems. Getting to know your new friends, maybe you can help each other overcome the hurdles in your way and achieve a brighter future? While maintining a mostly happy and silly theme throughout the entire story, Bistro Days isn't to be taken too lightly either. Through over 20 decisions, both during the common and the character routes, you are shaping your path to a happy - or unhappy - ending. Even when it does not immediately seem like it, each and every one of the decisions you make has influence on the story; Be it altering dialogue or changing entire scenes to react to something you said or did way earlier and of course choosing between the multiple available endings, some good and some bad. The involved main characters have distinct personalities, their own share of secrets and problems you can uncover with time and notable character development - if you so decide to help them change. Side characters that may appear throughout the story are nothing more than that though, usually don't even have a sprite (except for two cameos of Kickstarter backers) and little involvement. The protagonist, of which you can choose the gender and name yourself, changing many references accordingly, is a normal character fitting right in on the level of the main heroines. And hey, even the male protagonist surrounded by a bunch of good looking, well endowed girls does not end up staring at boobs like the generic anime protagonist even once! With all that combined, a single playthrough lasts for - as advertised on the store page - around 6h. Considering you have three different routes with at least two different endings to achieve and furthermore the option to play around with more decision combinations and your gender choice, a total content time of around 15h (plus-minus, depending on your dedication) is a solid estimate. The gallery in the main menu enables you to look at the 16 unique CGs of the game again, how many OSTs there are I didn't count - although you could certainly do so with your two hands.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2764578131

Conclusion
Is this game worth it? Considering the overall solid performance you get with quite a bit of replay value to experiment with choices, netting an average of around 15h of content worth your time, and looking at the set price tag I'd say yes, go for it. Bistro Days is a cute but not too silly timefiller capable of boosting your mood when you are bored. And remember, there will always be another Steam sale if you are hesitant!
Helpful review? Bistro Days is a slice-of-life visual novel developed by Drunk Bunny Games and published by Kikai Digital. You take on the role of an aspiring food blogger (whose gender and name are customizable) who's trying to make a name for themselves. (It doesn't help that the MC is overshadowed by a successful older brother and a mom who thinks that the MC should get "a real job".) As you're taking a walk, you encounter a person in a raccoon suit, offering free drink samples. After having taken a sample, that raccoon invites you inside Bellflower Bistro to sample the food there. That's when you start to meet the three ladies whom the MC can form friendships and even start up a romance. I'll end my story synopsis here to avoid spoilers and all that. As for the gameplay, Bistro Days has three routes: Rose (the manager), Lily (the cute waitress), and Iris (another waitress who aspires to be an Instagram star). Thus, there are multiple choices presented throughout the story. There are a total of 10 chapters. The first four chapters make up the common route, and based on the choices made, you'll end up on one of the three routes. Chapters 5 to 9 make up the individual routes and there are choices presented which will increase or decrease a lady's likability towards the MC. Then chapter 10 is the final chapter, where there are no choices and you simply play through the rest of the story. There are several CGs throughout the novel as well as Steam achievements (although the achievements won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "profile features limited"). Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my critique. Bistro Days caught my interest once I read the store description. Although slice-of-life can be a hit or miss for me, I found this one to hit the mark. First, I enjoyed the story itself. It starts off a bit slow, with the MC pretty much having no direction on what to do with their life. It doesn't help that something bad happened to their Instasnap account, so they're forced to make a new one, as well as the family issues. However, events start to pick up once the MC makes their way to Bellflower Bistro and meets the three romance interests. Depending on which route the MC encounters, they'll learn about that interest's particular problems. Then, there's the excitement over the upcoming Wisteria City Competition, and yup, there's cooking involved. XD Speaking of the interests, I liked getting to meet all three of them. Rose is the manager of Bellflower Bistro, and she's extremely dedicated, determined to make the restaurant a success. However, she doesn't know when to take breaks and sometimes, pushes herself a bit too much. Then there's Lily, the cute waitress who's the first to take the MC's order. We learn that Lily adores animals and even wants to go to veterinary school someday to learn how to care for them. However, she has a certain obsession that gets in the way of that. Finally, there's Iris, another waitress who's popular on Instasnap but has a bit of an attitude towards the MC, initially being rude to the point of calling them a pervert. However, there is a reason for Iris's attitude, which is explored as you go on her route. I liked the diverse cast of characters, and there are a few minor characters as well, who provide great support to the story. As for the writing, I found it pretty well paced. I noticed a few errors, mostly with lack of commas and whatnot, but overall, it was written well. In regards to technical issues, the only one that really stood out for me was when I would use the skip feature to skip previously read text. Sometimes, character sprites would flash/fade, which I found a bit weird. I'm not sure what causes this error, but I thought it was worth noting. As for the art, I like the style used. The sprites are in the usual anime style, which feels appropriate for this story. Colors are well used, and the backgrounds (albeit simple) are drawn well. Of course, I love the CGs. CGs are one of my favorite aspects about visual novels, and they're all drawn well here. For the soundtrack, there are several tracks, and they have a bit of variety. Most of the tracks have that everyday, light-hearted feel although since this is a slice-of-life story, they feel appropriate. There is partial voice acting as well, and I liked the voices used. I wish there had been more lines voiced, but I'm happy with what was present. Overall, would I recommend Bistro Days? If you like visual novels and are in the mood for a light-hearted, slightly comedical one with fun romance interests, then I say to give this a try. I enjoyed following the story and having the MC help each romance interest with her own problems. One of my favorite things is the pictures of the foods that the MC would order. They're just well done, and I only wish that I could have had those foods for real. lol For the asking price, I'd say it's just about worth getting since there is some voice acting as well. It took me a little over 10 hours to get all of the achievements and CGs. Of course, you can wait to get this on a sale, and I think it's worth getting for the fun story and beautiful art. ^^
Flying free and writing reviews solely for The Introverted Gamer.

You can be male or female for this VN. It's a funny and, as I went on the Lilly route, a very Cute VN. Good art work and story with some voice acting. There are some emotional spots here and there to add to the drama. All in all, I recommend this, and now to go on another route, if I can resist Lilly. ps; Well, I resisted Lilly and done the Rose route.. Rose is also very cute though in a different way to Lilly. She also has a more challenging upbringing to. There is also a surprise later in the game about Rose. pps; Iris,, what a path of chaos and fun. She can be very cute but you find out that she is quite vulnerable to. Her route is just as fun as the others, and, like the other paths, your family is connected in some way, which shocks Iris lol. Iris is also very passionate later on. Iris also gets some very surprising news near the end.
A short and sweet visual novel that is very well done. The dialogue is grounded and well written, the music and art are both nice, and the girls are super cute. Definitely has quite a bit of polish. If you want a cute and wholesome experience, then I would highly recommend this one.
