I really hate voting this game down. It's grossly unfinished and easy to leave the map. The combat is serviceable, the pixel art average, and the world is mostly empty. The tutorial teaches the basics but not in an interactive way. Best of luck with completing this project. Great work for doing it in addition to your respective course loads. It's better than my attempt at an RPG as a final class project. It's just lacking as a game in it's own right on Steam.
Before I played UPGRADE 2021-22 - Bionic Traveler, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good

"Bionic Traveler" is a student project from University of Pennsylvania. One of the first things students should be taught in game development is that 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid 1990's with dedicated 3D cards like the Voodoo3 and the ATI Rage. But the students were deliberately mistaught that's it's okay to release obsolete 2D games in the 3D era of gaming. Worse, this is beyond just low quality 2D artwork here, it's the laziest of all... about 2-3 hours worth of pixelcrap makes up the entirety of the game assets here. The students were told that pixelcrap is fine... in 2022. Certainly any professional developer seeing a prospective new hire who doesn't even know about 3D gaming probably isn't going to give them a job. Needless to say if an educational institution taught me incorrectly on purpose, I'd ask for my money back. The students were scammed. Anyway, what matters is what value this has for gamers, and that is none... it's a shallow, short, and pointless 2D pixelcrap JRPG looking "adventure" game (heck, RPG Maker asset flips look better than this) with lightweight exploration elements and some badly written dialogue. Frankly if I was the Dean of UPenn and discovered this had been published in the name of my University, I'd refund all of the students and close the doors permanently. No academic instutition beyond an elementary school that published a product this bad should be in business. We also have to question what value there is for gamers on Steam when institutions flood the store with low quality 2D video game homework assignments... sure, it might make the students feel good about themselves, but this has no benefit for gamers who have to wade through this stuff to find professionally made 3D games. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. It would be unethical for students to try charge money for their homework assignments, so you don't have to pay any money for this. But you'd still have to spend your time downloading this, and "time is money", as they say. There's the other problem, too... as a student project, this wasn't made for gamers. There's no requirement for them to polish and balance the game properly, all they need is something to show the faculty so they can get their grade and move on. Let's once more ask... why is that good for gamers? It's obviously not delivering a solid product. Yet here it is, on the store page, and here you are, reading my review for a student demo that's going to waste your time. While genuine amateur developers who made real products get ignored because they have to compete with this stuff. In some ways, this deluge of student projects on Steam is harmful to everyone. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 2 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Given that this free title won't increase your game collector count, is it worth your time to add it to your library? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
