It's a pretty good metroidvania with an interesting gimmick. The only negative I have to say about it that it's pretty short. I had fun with it. Well worth the "Summer Sale" money I spent on it.
Very firmly a "good" metroidvania that I can't really say is "great" in any way, but for what it is I enjoyed it. Its unique gimmick is pretty well-used and executed, most (though not /all/) transformations feel unique and have solid puzzles or platforming built around them, and a shocking number of them retain most of your mobility tools which. Reduces friction /so/ much. And you can swap them on the go, so like, yeah, pretty painless. The core combat is fine if nothing special, though I feel like it falls into a few traps - for one, your starting tools are /so good/ and so versatile that I. Kinda. Never used anything else. The default gun especially, omnidirectional aim with slight auto-aim and it does as much damage as your fists? With plenty of ammo to boot? Why would you ever take this off? The other trap is that, by endgame, if you've been exploring enough, you will become SUPREMELY overpowered and not much in the game has an answer to it. All of the final bosses I did first try fairly inelegantly because I just. Didn't have to care much. The only time I did struggle is during the midgame and mostly by doing areas "out of order" - after you get wall cling the game opens up and lets you run off in a lot of different directions (good) but there's also a very clear difficulty curve to these areas so if you go to a harder one first, well, tough. Badlands, then Mushroom Caves, then Sentinel Complex, then Dustborough, this is clearly how you're /supposed/ to go through the four cores, but I went all the way to Sentinel Complex first and found that boss kinda hard, then I. Never ever struggled again. This is fine, I guess, but it's part of why the game never really feels "great" because it's just not balanced that well. If a midgame build can still take down a lategame boss in just a few shots, then a lategame build is going to massacre a midgame boss, and also a lategame boss too. And it's not like the combat is the most complex, at its core - while, yes, you can use biomorphs in combat, you do lose some mobility and most of them can't keep up with the DPS of your base form, either, so like, why would you? The actual melee combat is pretty simple, the dodge is... kind of overpowered too but in a fun way, and while you have enough weapon options, again, the default ones are already so effective that you may as well just keep using them. Beyond that, the platforming is a little stiff, the writing is a little dry - the story is nice, though some of the endings... leave a bit to be desired (there is a Moral Choice at the end but also a Secret Third Option that's the only reasonable choice), the completion tracker is probably my favorite kind (tells you when a room is done but doesn't put any markers on your map otherwise), there's a weirdly pointless system of needing to "upgrade" save stations (for free) that you get... incredibly early on, so like. Why not just automatically do the upgrade when you get to a save station for the first time?... And to 100% the game I had to do about 30-40 minutes of grinding even after never once losing my money all game and having the magnet memento on most of the game too. Apparently they already rebalanced the economy once but I guess Not Enough? It's. A good game. I think it'd make for a sick randomizer, with how much freedom some of the biomorphs give you (the flying one lets you skip like half the wind puzzles if you don't already have that ability). But I also don't think it's essential. But if you're a metroidvania diehard and just like the format, you will have a Good time with this one.
This game is FANTASTIC, legitimately FUN
I think i'm halfway but I got burned out. Game is bland, switching forms is cool concept but in practice you only use the alternative creatures for solving puzzles and such. Grime and Ender Lilies did it SO much better. The story is not grabbing, the protagonist and his sidekicks spit out milenial boring dialogue, no other interesting characters. It's also VERY easy, only diff options is to make it EVEN easier. Bosses are easy, they have like 3 easily avoidable moves and die fast. That may be just me, but I want a bit of a challenge. Art looks pretty I guess. 4/10 overall SKIP
I got this recommendation as a tier S metroidvania. For the first 30min, I wasn't sold. The art is cool, but the story felt rehashed and the mechanics seemed poorly explained. That changed very rapidly - the morph mechanic is extremely interesting, the levels are well designed and the action/combat holds very well. Story is still a bit weak, but heck, the rest makes up for it ten times over. A+
