If you are not familiar with SEEP, they usually make simple games in the spirit of NES classics, with intentional limitations and movement, this time making their version of the original Contra. I don't have the highest standards for this developer, and I don't mean it in a negative way, I was just young enough to catch the NES generation so I accept these games for what they are, and frankly I am happy to buy them, with that said, in some ways this game went above my expectations, I feel like you guys put a bit more effort into this one, but I still feel like the game would be a lot better with a few smarter design choices. Actually, I think you guys got the Contra feel very well, it feels very faithful with the timing for the most part, although I have 3 problems with the movement. Instead of going prone to go under bullets, you can only crouch which actually is not enough to dodge on the same level or even if you are one tile below the enemy, so 99% of the time you have to dodge in the air. The game has a tendency to lag a bit, I am not sure what software you are using but it seems like there is something going on with the animation coding, it feels like the game stutters a bit when too many things are happening, and compared to the original Contra it feels 10% slower overall. Some of the weapons could use small adjustments, the flamethrower needs faster travel speed, and the boomerang needs a longer range. I want to briefly touch on something very subjective, but when it comes to Contra-inspired games this is something that I feel needs to be present as part of the experience, and what I am talking about is the intensity of the enemy spawn in the level design, pressuring you to constantly move and stay alert. Now, during the first few stages you could be forgiven, and the difficulty while easy is acceptable, but I wanted it to get a bit more challenging toward the end, this game has multiple lives and 6 hitpoints, making it significantly easier to begin with, but more importantly, I felt like you did not spawn enemies enough from both directions to really pressure me enough, so it was kind of just me walking from start of the game to the end. On that note, if you recall the waterfall level in Contra, I wish you guys did some vertical platforming, I know you guys always make easy games, but I just want them to ramp up toward the end. I was kinda surprised that this game has multiple endings and various optional routes, you have to replay it 4 times to see every stage, although in the long run it does not add that much challenge variety, even though I personally enjoy your cheesy ending drawings. Other than that, it's pretty much Contra, more or less the same weapons, and there are 2 characters with slight differences with the weapon types.
Pros:
(+) You almost got the feel of the Contra perfectly, the movement and most of the weapons felt on point, I just think if you had the prone position and a bit more enemy pressure, with a few vertical stages, it would be even better. (+) The game has multiple-level paths with 4(?) different endings. The actual level design between the routes and their unique bosses do not add that much variety, but I still liked that you can replay the game and find something new.
Feedback:
-would be nice if you added a prone position, crouching really does not help very much. -it feels like the flamethrower needs to be faster, and the boomerang needs longer range -the game stutters a bit on some levels, seems to be your software -I think ammo packs need to be slightly bigger, and I think you should remove money point packs -would like to see each boss having at least 2 attacks or just more bullet-hell patterns -it might be a good idea to add the optional 1-hit point mode, will speak to some nerds When I think of Contra I think of a platformer where you constantly move and are under constant pressure to kill enemies, and you almost go that feel correct, but I didn't feel like the game ramped up in difficulty and felt too much like casually completing the stages. If you had a few more vertical stages and a bit more enemy spam, I think it would feel better. Overall Thoughts: 7/10 Definitely not the best version of a Contra-inspired game that I played on Steam, but it's also not trying to be a modern version of it, so in that context, I think it was decently made. Like I said, I think you guys actually got very close in terms of overall feel, if you just made the game a bit more intense and fast-paced it would feel better, and I wish you had some vertical platforming stages as well. The multiple routes and different endings was a nice touch.
Niche, obscure and underrated games: http://store.steampowered.com/curator/31294838-Hidden-Gem-Discovery/
Senti falta de "Power-up" e desafios extras.
This game is amazing. I like how you can immolate enemies with the flamethrower weapon. Another terrific game from a terrific developer. I hope they make a beat-em up next.
A really nice Contra like game. Colourished, fluid, varied, nice weapons and sceneries. It really has Contra and Alien vibes with the levels full of monsters, aliens, and soldiers mixing scientific facilities with infested structures. Absolute very best of all is it has litres and litres of blood!! I love this unlike many other puritan games that tend to avoid this terrific feature.
I tutaj pojawia się minus - by grę ukończyć należy ją trzykrotnie przejść. Niekiedy mamy poziom do wyboru. Grafika ok - pikselowata. Można włączyć sobie opcję CRT. Muzyka przeciętna. Poziomy nie zapadają w pamięć. Niemniej można przy niej fajnie spędzić czas. 6,5/10
Great tribute to run & gun games like Contra or Metal Slug. The SEEP dev team really know how to pay tribute to classic style video games. I have played thru all their Swords & Bones games, that is why I tried Biomech Hell. I played game on my Steam deck and it worked great on the deck! I played the whole thing and got all of the endings within 4 hours. Each complete run takes about an hour and you have to complete 4 runs to get the true ending. But each run is somewhat different with a new stage and new bosses. Overall, cant complain given the low price point. Keep churning out these classic style tribute games SEEP, you know what you are doing!
One of the best games that I have played on Steam 1 - Nice Story 2 - Great graphics 3 - Many enemies 4 - We can change the weapon 5 - Good music
A little run'n'gun remembering good old Contra! As always a very cool game with an affordable difficulty. You can see the progress made since the first games of SEEP franchise and notice some reference.
Now this is a good one! After Thunderflash, which I didn't like, I was afraid the next game with the same protagonists would be just another bland imitation of a classic, in this case Contra, but I'm happy I was wrong. Biomech Hell not only understands the assignment, it executes it with care. Taking example from the best of the pack, aka Contra Hard Corps, the selectable characters aren't just different sprites but each has his own set of four weapons with limited ammo, besides the regular fast peashooter. The temptation would be to save those for the bosses, but using them on regular enemies not only garners the satisfaction of flashier deaths, it also racks up higher scores. Also inspired by Hard Corps are a few branching paths, making it so that the game doesn't end after a mere single run; the first three times, the ending will see the villain escape to fight another day. By clearing the first three endings and garnering a certain score by the end of the fourth level, the path to the true ending is opened. That alone shows a surprising level of polish in the whole game, also visible in details like the ability to kill enemies by headshot even with the basic shot. The only thing that will likely take some time to get used to is the angle of the diagonal shot being lower than in Contra and other inspired games, therefore feeling awkward. The game is far from "hardcore", as each life offers six hit points and there are a few extra lives around, but still not too easy given also those conditions for its full completion (continuing also takes some score off). Even the bosses, while far from exceptional, are a bit more combative than what I've learned to expect from SEEP. I could have lived without the one blatantly recycled from Cosmos Bit, though. It's no Blazing Chrome, but Biomech Hell is still a valid Contra-like, and among SEEP's catalogue, comfortably sitting on the podium along with Katana Soul and Roar of Revenge. At the time of this writing, it's discounted at little more than €2, which couldn't be better spent!
