It's a bit strange that there's not a single discussion thread for this product. That in itself makes me leery. 1. Why is this application requesting access to get through my firewall? There is zero reason for this, unless you're harvesting data or performing some other online activity without the user's permission or knowledge. There is nothing on the store page whatsoever regarding this. 2. When shutting down the program in Steam VR, the application continues to run in the background. You can hear it through the HMD speakers, even when you return to the Home lobby. 3. I had to actually shut down Steam VR and take off the headset. After doing so, the Binaural Odyssey image was frozen on the desktop. I had to force quit the application from the Windows task manager. So far, everything about this free app feels very fishy, and it's raising a few flags with me. I'd like to request a comment from the developer if possible. Until then, I can't recommend that folks download this - free or not.
See how sounds and shapes help mental health in virtual reality. The aim of Binaural Odyssey is to create and guide the user’s emotions. The virtual world reacts to the eyes of the viewer and creates visual shapes from whichever direction the user looks at. The project shows the potential of new technologies as an art form. The mechanisms of action of binaural sounds, colors, and patterns are based on a scientific basis.
Experienced on Windows Mixed Reality
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/xIIKdWThjeE I really enjoyed my time with this app. It took me about 30 minutes to figure out that it was in fact never-ending. Since it was very late, I just had to stop playing. You get this mix of colors, shapes, & sounds and it's all so mesmerizing. It's running on the Unreal Engine and there are no interactions, other than your gaze. Press escape on KBM to quit. At first I thought the song was on a loop, and there are patterns to the music that you'll hear, but then the music & sounds kept changing ever so-subtly. It was the same with the visuals. You see recurring patterns, but then a few seconds later you'll see something completely new. And it's all so chill and relaxing. It's already pretty late here and I was about to fall asleep with my headset on. I highly recommend this experience! I'll be making a video review soon, but hey, just enjoy it for yourself! It's free. It's gonna make my top 100 list of Free Steam VR games. [b]Rate 7.5/10. If you want a relaxing, chill experience with cool patterns of music, sounds, shapes & colors, then this app is a must download! no play - no control - just relax and enjoy being in the peaceful void
Binaural Odyssey is not a game. Games contain meaningful gamelike interaction and game loops, which are absent in this software. Instead of being a game, Binaural Odyssey is a software application that this is basically a simple, badly made "art" exhibition as you wave your arms around while some crap binaural beats play. Alarmingly the developer claims to cure mental illness with this snake oil, and that's a real problem. Trying to address mental health issues through the medium of video games is misguided and can be harmful. While it's plausible to suggest the intention was noble, this can do more harm than good. Game developers are not professionals in areas of mental health and social problems, and when they use video games to pretend they are, this can cause far more harm than good. It's my opinion that it's improper to use garbage art exhibitions like this to try "cure" illnesses like so much "natural oils" or whatever. Apart from the harm such hamfisted attempts at addressing mental health can cause, this offers zero benefit to PC gamers. People suffering from health issues or other social problems should seek out professional help rather than going to crap shovelware art school dropout stuff like this. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. Tetris, for example, has a game loop where a random block appears, the gamer interacts with the block to position it, and then the game decides if that finishes a row or not, increases the players score if any rows were completed, then gives the gamer another block to position. Counter-Strike has a game loop where a player seeks another player, tests their skill against that player by shooting them or being shot, the computer rewards the player if they win, and then if the player survives, they repeat that loop. There's no loop here, no true interactive feedback. It simply is not a game, it cannot be "played". This has misleadingly been launched in the "Games" section of Steam instead of the "Software" section. This is a common mistake for developers who are new to Steam, or don't understand the difference between games and software which isn't a game. It seems this software published incorrectly as a game is simply lack of experience/knowledge of the correct process. Here's a link for the process to publish non-game software on Steam: Steam Developer Help With Software Publishing It's unfortunate this process was not known about/followed, resulting in a software application being published in the wrong place. Publishing things which aren't games on Steam in the Games section as games is misleading to gamers and somewhat harmful, because it pollutes the Steam marketplace and takes away visibility and market exposure for genuine game developers who do the right thing and make games for gamers. There are no gameplay loops in this software, no "gameplay", no meaningful game like interaction. It's a software application and as such has no merits as a video game for gamers. Because of this, I cannot recommend this non-game software as a game to gamers.
