TLDR: A relaxing yet mysterious simulation with multiple endings and eerie atmosphere that could benefit from a darker psychological edge without cheap scares. I really enjoyed my time with Before Exit Gas Station. The game creates a unique atmosphere where simple tasks like cleaning up and closing the station feel strangely engaging. The sense of routine combined with subtle mystery makes every shift feel different. I appreciated the multiple endings which gave me reasons to replay and experiment with how I approached each night. The visuals are realistic enough to immerse me in the environment and the narration adds a layer of charm. Although the game has this eerie feeling, it is not a horror game as some may believe and after discovering they got disappointed or frustrated. Because of that I believe it could be a plus if the game had a more dark and sinister tone to it without resorting to jump scares and things like that. A more chilling side of the psychological horror genre, and not just an anomally game. Overall I found the gameplay relaxing yet intriguing. The puzzles and exploration are balanced well and the tasks never feel overwhelming. It is a short but memorable experience that blends casual simulation with mystery in a way that kept me hooked until the end. What stood out to me most was the way the game uses silence and subtle sound design. The hum of the lights, the creak of doors, and the occasional distant noise all contribute to a feeling that something is slightly off. This makes even the most ordinary actions feel layered with tension. It is impressive how much atmosphere is created without relying on heavy visual effects or loud scares. The narrative is delivered in fragments and small discoveries which makes me curious to dig deeper. Each ending feels like a piece of a larger puzzle and encourages me to think about what the gas station represents. This approach makes the game feel more thoughtful than a straightforward simulation. I also appreciated the pacing. The game never rushes me and instead allows me to settle into the rhythm of closing duties. This slower tempo makes the eventual anomalies more impactful because they break the calm in subtle but noticeable ways. It is a clever design choice that rewards patience and observation. Replayability is another strength. With four different endings, I felt motivated to try different decisions and explore alternative paths. This gave me a sense of control over the story and made me feel more connected to the experience.
The game is absolutely worth buying. Of course, you really should play Before Exit: Supermarket first. Despite not having numbered titles, these entries do have a chronological order. With that said, I'm a big fan of the series here, bought the original on PS4 and this version on Steam. Unlike the previous entry, this one focuses more on the story than I expected. While the previous entry said next to nothing about the silent protagonist, this one clarifies the main character's identity, giving him his own personality, voice, and an expanded backstory. At first, I wanted the silent protagonist back, but I ultimately came to appreciate and enjoy that the developers put in the effort to expand the lore of the series. The gameplay is solid with the tasks of closing down the gas station being more randomized than they were in the supermarket one, which I appreciated. In the previous game, I had eventually become so familiar with the possible layouts that I knew within seconds of starting work everything that needed to be done to shut the store down. However, this time, I really had to pay attention every night. I also bought both DLCs. I enjoyed the Midnight DLC more than Daylight. Midnight was fun, with lots of interesting twists while shutting down the store. Daylight, on the other hand, felt like an entirely different genre, a sort of "find the difference" game instead of closing down the store. While I appreciated the lore building, I do hope the next game in this series (fingers crossed) just focuses on the core "closing down the store" loop, which is the strong point of Before Exit. Lastly, I want to thank the developers for making this game, and also to thank whoever's reading this review. Hope you enjoy the game too!
Gra potrafi zdenerwować, gdy pominie się kolejny raz jakiś drobny szczegół. Ostrzegam, bardzo trudna. Ale jednak zachęca mnie to do próbowania znowu i znowu. Polecam. Wymaksowane. Dalej polecam. Czekam na DLC.
♥♥♥♥ game simple as that doo doo straight from some obese mans chocolate starfish
Das Spiel macht Mega Spaß keine Bugs nichts und läuft sehr flüssig gibt 10 Sterne :)
The scariest part was not the horror. It was my manager popping out from behind doors and trees to yell at me because I missed one tiny thing before closing (man gives me way too many tasks) I only played a little over an hour because I got violently motion sick, so I cannot say much about the later parts. From what I played, it has a fun silly-spooky concept, but definitely check your tolerance for first-person movement.
So was triggert mich hart. 4/10
A really nice mix of searching for anomalies while working on the side. After the first game in the supermarket, this feels like a cool follow-up. Less focused on pure horror, but it makes up for it with some very strange and abnormal anomalies that keep things interesting.
