This was pretentious, solipsistic, nihilistic twaddle. Beckett is a depressed man struggling to connect with the world after the loss of his wife, who was depressed and who either committed suicide by hanging herself, or was institutionalized and died. The world is presented as a gritty thing full of fakery, and (according to Beckett/the omniscient narrator), nothing means anything. He ultimately chooses to completely disconnect and commits suicide by drowning in the ocean. There's a hope-spot at the end, if you have Peregrine take his medication, but even that is presented as agreeing to continue to operate within a deluded state. The artistic style and general presentation of the game is clearly in the vein of German impressionism. The use of insects, and names of certain characters are references to other, greater creators and philosophers. The other characters in the story are literally dehumanized. Unfortunately, the *impression* it leaves is very adolescent. If this is rooted in the emotional truth of the creators, I can hope they were able to grow beyond that is portrayed here.
good
A visual novel with superb dialogue, great presentation, and an intriguing, seamless mix of multimedia styles. Not usually my sort of game but if you like interactive fiction, go straight for it.
Eraserhead: The Game
Disco Elysium meets Eraserhead meets L'etranger. Do you exist? Do you want to?
This gets Hampter's Steamdeck seal of approval! :GemFlower:
Pretentious in the best way possible, the art and dialogue make it well worth playing.
A very interesting experience. I'd definitely consider it interactive fiction rather than a game, so if you're someone who doesn't like that you might be dismayed by Beckett. (There are only two instances of actual gameplay over the course of the story.) But the story is interesting and worth experiencing, even if it's bleak as all hell. I've seen the term "pretentious" used to describe this game and don't entirely agree. The only moment I found pretentious was the play featuring two characters named Morgellon and Ekbom, who each displayed the symptoms of the psychological disorders they were named after. That felt a little smug and on the nose. The rest of it felt like a clear creative vision that I couldn't entirely see. The story resists your attempts to take things from it, and ultimately you just have to sit there and experience it. I really respect that. Absolutely worth the time, if interactive fiction is something you enjoy.
The writing is purple and juvenile, lining a plot that exists mostly in exposition. That being said, I had a grand time reading out the text of the game with a friend and making fun of this. The presentation is (sometimes) kind of rad! Well worth the 79 cents.
