Oh boyyy. Is this game really finished? I am not 100% convinced. The voice acting is really nice but that is about it. I mean, the characters are also able to blink so there was a lot of work put in there. The art style is extremly outdated (~2004). Of course that is very subjective but none of the characters were really speaking to me. The first time i started this game the heroine was like a ghost and it took 1 whole minute for her to load completely. I wasn't really able to read the plot. It just wouldn't let me. So I closed the game and restarted it. And oh my. Apparently there was supposed to be an intro video that didn't even load for me the first time. Normally I am a sucker for this plot but this game was so hard to play. Everything just felt like it was going in slowmotion with the background changing like you put a video on 0.25x on youtube. You can escape the voice lines but you can not escape the slowmo scenery changes. Every. single. small. gesture. change. As a small reference: Currently 44% of all players have finished the prologue which took me even with restarting about 3 hours. Sooo.. if you want to try the game out to see if you might like it, you are not really able to. All the other achievements have 16% or less (understandably so). pros; - there is a dictionary in case you don't know everything - this game teaches you patience (but also might result in an anger issue therapy) - it is very interactive. There was clearly a lot of time and effort put into this game. It also seems like the main character has a personality and is not just a lifeless doll - really nice japanese voice acting (excluding the main character of course) and music! neutral; - I can't really say anything towards the characters/different routes because I am still not entirely sure if my nerves are strong enough to withstand that long. It is extremly hard to focus on the plot since I keep getting interrupted with every little gesture change. I do feel like some of the characters do lack a little bit of personality sometimes cons; - Heisuke is giving me an identity crisis. He and the main character could be twins - a lot of historical background which I personally wouldn't mind if it would be explained so that you do not need to know any background at all. Because of the mention of so many different names without a picture to go along with it was pretty confusing - sometimes the storyline felt more like multiple choice than a romance visual novel. Overall it felt like parts of the storyline were missing - did i already mention you are going to get so tiltproof that not even League of Legends is able to tilt you anymore? Jokes aside, it is is really not funny anymore at this point. Asking for 50€ for this is a rip-off. This game has been out for over a year and you can not tell me there is no possible way to fix this. Sometimes the changes are so slow I have a head in a head from a character or the same character spawning/despawning next to each other I do not remember how much it was on sale but the full price is definetly a hard no. Even the normal amount for a decent otome with voice acting (~30€) would seem hardly justified. If I finished the story and I feel like this is worth playing I will change my review accordingly but for now I can't recommend it at all. Please fix your game.
Uhm... So, don't get me wrong...I LOVE the Shinsengumi, I LOVE Japanese history and bakumatsu specifically, I LOVE the fact that the MC can fight--unlike the the typical female otome protagonists. A lot of reasons to get this game and this game would have a lot of potential, but the major problem is that the game is OLD and there are so many bugs that it's just not worth playing anymore... I was so excited to play this game and I really...REALLY wanted to play this game, but I just got disappointed in the end. It's not worth getting this game unless they fix the bugs, but given how many years have passed without any updates, I doubt it will ever happen.
I like it, aber..

Haven't gotten very far yet but I'm enjoying the game so far. Contrary to what another review said, the heroine DOES NOT disguise herself to join the Shinsengumi, everyone knows she's a girl and she doesn't hide it. I thought that was very interesting, no one holds it against her and she's the only girl in the group. She is still just a rookie in the group though so she isn't privy to a lot of the inner workings, but she's not stupid and won't just accept things as she's told. She's proactive in seeking out the truth. Still she's more of a bystander than someone who's directly involved in the direction of the Shinsengumi. The player's choices do not influence the outcome only which guy's route you're on and each guy only has one ending. Haven't experiences any particularly slow transitions so I guess the bugs have been fixed. This game's got a crazy large amount of dictionary terms, even with the same term coming up over and over I'm afraid I'm still not that familiar with all the terms as I'm not that big on history despite being a fan of Bakumatsu themed stories. I saw a bunch of reviews comparing it to Hakuoki but I personally find this game more interesting, I only managed to get through the prologue of Hakuoki and for me it felt like a slog to get through. I think other reviews were right that there isn't a whole lotta romance here so I'm keeping my expectations low on that front and savoring every little one that comes up. I like the art. In particular, I think the heroine is very pretty and appreciate that she has a character portrait with changing expressions. Each guy looks unique too. There are blinking animations and their mouths move when they talk too. The game is fully voiced, excluding the heroine. I was a little disappointed that the default name is not voiced.
Bakumatsu Renka Shinsengumi This game is more cartoonish looking, but once you get start the game I know you will enjoy it. The one route I was able to get was with Kondo, it was great, I was also able to get Yamazaki's routes, and some others but the routes ended as bad endings. For me personally, I don't like the way Harada is portrayed and Heisuke (looks like the main character), but I still enjoyed their stories. I do really like the storyline and the comic scenes and, of course, the voice actors are wonderful. I am looking forward to a guide in English. If you like Shinsengumi, I do recommend this game, because of the characters, and the VC's, etc. Even though this game, for me, is not in the same category as Hakuoki or Night Shade, I think you will still appreciation this version of Shinsengumi. Be safe and have a great day!
Bakumatsu Renka SHINSENGUMI is a visual novel that wears its historical inspiration openly, blending the romantic conventions of the otome genre with the turbulent political climate of late Edo–period Japan. Developed by VRIDGE INC. and published by D3PUBLISHER, it places the player in the role of a young woman who disguises herself and joins the Shinsengumi, the legendary samurai militia tasked with maintaining public order as Japan edges toward massive cultural and political transformation. Rather than treating history as simple set dressing, the game uses the era’s tension—rising Western influence, internal ideological conflict, assassinations, and shifting power dynamics—as an emotional backdrop for every character route. The result is a story that feels larger than any single romance, where loyalty, survival, and duty constantly pull against personal desire. The narrative structure follows the traditional otome format, introducing a shared prologue before branching into multiple character routes, each focusing on a notable Shinsengumi figure. Characters such as Hijikata, Okita, Harada, and Kondō are written not merely as idealized love interests, but as flawed, passionate men grappling with fear, honor, and the approaching end of the samurai age. The protagonist’s presence among them—initially an outsider—forces these icons of history to reveal softer, more vulnerable sides. Some routes lean more heavily into romance, while others emphasize war strategy, ideological debate, or tragic inevitability. That variety gives the game replay value, ensuring that each run feels distinct rather than simply rearranged dialogue. Visually, the game reflects its origins as an earlier-generation otome title, but the Steam release updates the artwork to higher resolution and gives CGs, character portraits, and UI elements a cleaner, more polished look. The art direction favors traditional period aesthetics: dimly lit barracks, candlelit tatami rooms, bustling Kyoto streets, shrines, and moonlit patrol routes create an atmosphere that feels both intimate and grand. The soundtrack enhances that tone with restrained instrumentation that supports dramatic confrontations and quieter reflective moments alike. Voice acting, especially in the Japanese audio, brings nuance to emotional peaks, allowing even stoic characters to reveal depth through subtle performance rather than exaggerated theatrics. Gameplay remains firmly rooted in visual novel conventions: reading dialogue, choosing branching responses, and unlocking story variations based on relationship development. What keeps it engaging is not mechanical complexity, but the way choices reinforce the protagonist’s identity. Decisions often carry weight beyond affection—selecting a diplomatic answer, an act of defiance, or a moment of compassion can shift perceptions within the Shinsengumi and subtly affect how events unfold. Some routes feature surprising story turns, including political intrigue, betrayals, or moral dilemmas that acknowledge the historical Shinsengumi’s brutal legacy. The game doesn’t shy away from the harsher realities of the period, yet it also allows space for tender moments that highlight why romance remains a compelling possibility amid chaos. The game’s biggest strength—and potential hurdle—is its commitment to historical drama. Players seeking a lighthearted or purely romantic otome experience may find certain storylines emotionally demanding, and some romances take a long time to develop because they must fit organically within the Shinsengumi’s rigid, hierarchical world. The pacing can feel slow for newcomers, especially during the shared prologue, and like many visual novels, repetition across playthroughs is inevitable. Yet for players who enjoy gradually earned intimacy, relational subtlety, and character arcs shaped by circumstance, the deliberate rhythm becomes part of the immersion rather than a flaw. Because it is built around multiple routes, Bakumatsu Renka SHINSENGUMI rewards commitment. Completing every storyline reveals new perspectives, hidden motivations, and thematic echoes that strengthen the overarching narrative. Some routes end tragically, reflecting the real fates of historical figures, while others offer bittersweet or hopeful resolutions. That emotional variability ensures the game never feels formulaic, even if its structure remains familiar. Still, it does not drastically reinvent the otome format, and players expecting highly interactive gameplay, branching minigames, or alternative endings determined by complex statistics may find it straightforward. Ultimately, Bakumatsu Renka SHINSENGUMI succeeds because it treats its characters, era, and conflicts with sincerity. It respects its historical foundation while reshaping it into something emotionally resonant and accessible. The romances feel meaningful not simply because the player chooses them, but because they grow against a backdrop where time, politics, and mortality are constant threats. For fans of historical otome games, samurai-era fiction, or character-driven storytelling with emotional gravity, it offers a rewarding narrative journey. It may be too measured, serious, or structurally traditional for those seeking breezy escapism, but for players willing to immerse themselves in its world, it delivers drama, passion, and tragedy worthy of the Shinsengumi’s mythic legacy.
