Backrooms: Exploration is a first-person psychological horror experience that places players inside one of the internet's most unsettling urban legends and challenges them to survive within an endless maze of impossible spaces. Set during the difficult year of 2020, the story begins with two friends whose lives have been turned upside down by the economic consequences of the global pandemic. After losing their jobs and struggling to support themselves, desperation drives them toward a risky decision that ultimately goes terribly wrong. What starts as an attempt to solve their financial problems quickly transforms into a nightmare beyond anything they could have imagined. Following a failed robbery, one of the friends finds himself separated from reality and trapped inside the mysterious realm known as the Backrooms. Far removed from the familiar world he once knew, he awakens in a place where logic no longer applies. Endless yellow corridors, silent hallways, and strangely repetitive environments stretch endlessly in every direction. There are no clear answers, no obvious exits, and no guarantee that survival is even possible. With no way of knowing what awaits around the next corner, the only objective becomes finding a path out of this impossible dimension while preserving both body and mind. The game embraces a highly immersive presentation through the use of a body-mounted camera perspective. Every movement, glance, and reaction is experienced through the lens of a head-mounted bodycam, creating the feeling that players are directly documenting their own descent into the unknown. This visual approach enhances the realism of the experience and strengthens the sense of vulnerability. The limited perspective, natural camera movement, and realistic presentation make every encounter feel immediate and personal, pulling players deeper into the oppressive atmosphere of the Backrooms. Exploration serves as the heart of the gameplay. Players must navigate through a wide variety of interconnected levels, each possessing its own appearance, layout, and unsettling characteristics. Some areas seem almost ordinary at first glance, while others become increasingly surreal and disturbing the longer they are explored. The environments constantly challenge players' sense of direction, creating an overwhelming feeling of isolation and confusion. Every new level introduces fresh mysteries and unexpected dangers, encouraging players to remain cautious while searching for clues that may lead to escape. The Backrooms themselves are more than simple environments; they become the primary source of horror. Endless rooms, empty office spaces, abandoned hallways, and impossible architecture combine to create a setting that feels both familiar and deeply wrong. The game draws its tension not only from potential threats but also from the unsettling realization that the world around the player should not exist. The further one travels, the more reality appears to unravel, transforming ordinary spaces into places of psychological terror. Atmosphere plays a crucial role throughout the experience. Silence is often just as frightening as any visible threat. The distant hum of fluorescent lights, the echo of footsteps, and subtle environmental sounds constantly remind players that they are completely alone—or perhaps not entirely alone. The uncertainty surrounding what may be lurking within the Backrooms creates a persistent sense of dread that follows players throughout every moment of exploration. Rather than relying solely on sudden scares, the game builds fear gradually through anticipation, mystery, and environmental storytelling. The narrative provides a unique perspective on the Backrooms mythos by connecting the supernatural setting to a grounded human story. The protagonist is not an investigator, scientist, or trained survivor. He is an ordinary person pushed into extraordinary circumstances by desperation and bad luck. This relatable foundation makes the horror more effective because players experience the impossible world through the eyes of someone who is just as confused and frightened as they are. Fans of Backrooms lore will find numerous elements that pay tribute to the source material while presenting a distinct interpretation of the concept. The game explores multiple levels of the Backrooms, each designed to capture the eerie sense of liminality and isolation that has made the phenomenon so popular. Particular inspiration is drawn from the work of Kane Pixels, whose interpretation of the Backrooms helped redefine the concept for modern audiences. This influence can be seen in the game's realistic presentation, atmospheric storytelling, and focus on creating fear through environment rather than constant confrontation. Backrooms: Exploration ultimately delivers a journey into a world where reality has broken down and survival depends on perseverance, awareness, and courage. Through immersive bodycam visuals, detailed environments, and a strong emphasis on atmosphere, the game offers a haunting experience that captures the unsettling essence of the Backrooms. Players who enjoy psychological horror, liminal spaces, and exploration-driven narratives will find themselves drawn into a nightmare that feels disturbingly believable and impossible to forget. Rating: 7/10
It's a goodish Backrooms game. It has good visuals and atmosphere, but it's really short, and the stamina sucks ass, as well as the screen tearing/not turning smoothly. But ehh 5/10 get it on a sale for cheap
Really great backrooms game .. not the best but still worth playing .. 6 / 10
very short but OK, lack of entity chase and action!
Atmospheric experience that got a little weird in the middle. Having the setting to turn entities on and off was an excellent idea.
What I liked: - Level design - The option to turn off screamers and entities - Sound design - Price - The presence of puzzles (though they're too easy) What I didn't like: - The voice acting. Seriously, first of all, it sounds like an AI voice, and second, there’s no fear in that voice, like someone who’s actually in Backrooms. Because of this, the voice doesn’t fit the game at all. Either don’t include voice acting at all, or do it well, or add an option in the menu to turn it off - Despite the good level design, many locations looked similar, which made it a bit boring and repetitive at times. Plus, there were moments when the corridors and movement felt really drawn out. Overall, the game is good; I’d rate it a 6 out of 10.
Id pay 15 dollars for this its super fun to explore and just go through everything slowly
