Sum-Up

In-depth analysis further down.

[th]🟩 Pros[/th] [th]🟥 Cons[/th]

- The Backrooms’ atmosphere is well-recreated: each level gives an eerie sense of impending doom, while scary moments are plentiful and intense. - Puzzles are diverse and challenging enough for the most part; they don’t become stale as the levels progress. - Gameplay variety between exploration, lore, puzzles and platforming is good enough to keep interest up throughout the experience. - Above-average quantity of bugs and technical issues that hinder the experience and may even lead to progress loss due to unwarranted deaths. - The experience is very linear, without interesting side areas, secrets or optional encounters to discover. This detracts from the Backrooms’ mystery factor. - The character’s walking speed is very slow; when paired with the labyrinthine, disorienting layout of the Backrooms, it makes getting anywhere a slog.

[th]🟨 Bugs & Issues[/th] [th]🔧 Specs[/th]

- In some cases, you will take damage because of bugs, especially while climbing. - Complete lack of graphical options, no FPS Lock / Vsync either. - Sometimes the UI may get stuck, forcing you to close and reopen the game to fix. The entire content is linear, and there’s no reason to replay unless you want to try Liminal Mode (free roam, no hints) for the sake of it.

Is it worth buying? The price of 14,79€ is fair for this amount of content, however I’d suggest to anyone, except fans of the Backrooms, to wait for a sale regardless.

Verdict: Decent
Rating Chart Here A passable take on the Backrooms universe with a focus on puzzles. After traversing a seemingly solid surface, these unlucky ones find themselves in the Backrooms, as opposed to the Frontrooms (our world). This liminal (extra-dimensional) space is composed of hundreds of levels (here you’ll explore only a handful of them), each containing dangerous anomalies, lethal creatures and mysteries unfathomable to the human mind, that bend or break every scientific law. You are one of them, and your mission is simple: survive this new and mysterious world - with or without the aid of a mysterious stranger. The game uses a low-res VHS filter for its visuals, rightly so as the original Backrooms Footage that started everything was indeed taken with such a medium. This artistic decision improves the atmosphere, making everything unclear in a good way, expanding upon the sense of dread and bleakness these same-y, desolate locales already give out on their own. Sound design improves upon this factor, with cryptic sounds, anxiety-inducing growls and more than a few ‘jump-scares’ in an otherwise disturbingly calm setting without a soul in sight. Lore fragments both in visual and written form are scattered in each level, directing your path forward and giving you a way of interpreting what happened, or how that particular level’s ‘rules’ work. The writing quality isn’t great nor terrible, a sufficient average.
Exploration & Platforming
You’ll explore the Backrooms exclusively on foot, and slowly at that. Even if you continuously sprint, it will take a while to go anywhere, and given the extension of some levels, not to mention their disorienting geometry, expect to roam and get lost a lot. On one side the slow pace makes the experience more atmospheric surely, on the other, it makes it dull, especially when you have to backtrack or re-do a section because you died. Saving is performed at fixed points in the shape of blue spheres, as many times as you want. Save often, because bugs are not uncommon and may get you stuck, kill you or otherwise make something ‘not work as intended’, but a reload usually does the job. Your camera and flashlight have limited battery and can be used to see in the dark, while painkillers restore health and are sparingly found in key locations. Your diary will indicate the next step to take, and also documents found laying around will help - unless you play Liminal Mode, which is free-roam, no hand-holding. In some instances you’ll have to overcome precision movement challenges like jumping between disappearing platforms, navigating a maze of traps, or finding switches while underwater with limited oxygen to name a few. These sections are a good diversion from the usual puzzle-solving, and give a dangerous twist to the pacing. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2954267912
Puzzles
The enigmas you’ll face will usually have components and hints scattered throughout whole levels, with the hints of your mysterious friend guiding you to the next, providing precise instructions on how to proceed - but still, you’ll have some work to do when it comes down to locating and solving the puzzles themselves, as no precise locations are provided, and there’s no map, of course. They mainly consist in deciphering a code or logical sequence, finding and activating a series of buttons through a maze, and figuring out the correct order of various switches or platforms. Once all the trials are completed, you’ll find a dimensional portal throwing you into the next level - which is kind of a pity really, as no-clipping (traditional means to move between levels) would’ve been cooler and more lore-friendly than these ‘portals’.
Lore & Side Content
Aside from the story-related documents, you’ll find more clues in each level that may shed some light on the events. They range from other documents to visual references you can interpret in various ways - although none of the levels is particularly high in detail, and most props or rooms will be just that, empty filler without a particular meaning, exceptions do apply. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2954268042
I personally was not impressed in the 1st 25 minutes that I played this game. I don't like how Liminal Mode was not ready to play when I bought the game, and it said, "Coming Soon". In my opinion, you're supposed to have stuff like that ready when I buy and play the game ahead of time...First two sections were okay, though I encountered a few bugs with the door interactions and collision physics in the 1st major area. I don't like how linear it felt in the (I'm assuming) story mode. I REALLY do however like the camera, item inventory management, though the formatting could be a little better. It felt good to have the flashlight and camera be limited in that sense. Also, the way some of the descriptions and text boxes are written feel a little off. I can't put my finger on it, but it felt like a lot of the structure could be worded better, or much simpler. Also, movement felt sluggish. I should be able to move faster than my current walking/running speed allows.I realize this is one of those backrooms games with a backstory and entities, but the scares felt a little cheesy, and I didn't really feel much of anything related to the feeling of unsettling. It felt more like jumpscares and surprises, which I don't think suits the backrooms as an idea. Finally, I encountered the section that made me get my refund. There's a bit where you find a certain room, and you get trapped suddenly with blurry vision and a buzzing alarm. I had to do a sequence of puzzles according to a note, but it felt so plastered on, and I died without ever finding that code. I'm sure the code is somewhere in that room, but it definitely was not simple or easy to find, which I think is a bit of a problem. Puzzles should be approachable, not extremely hard to pin point.Overall, I did not have good 1st impressions of this game, which is a shame. I really would like to buy this game again in the future if it ever improves, but with what I witnessed and what I encountered in my first impression, it made me not want to play the game again....for now.
I love the ambience it made me ♥♥♥♥ bricks. The puzzle are very challenging (I have an orc brain). 10/10 can't wait for the sequel 'Backwoods Explanation', where the explain the lore behind the heavy presence of Backwoods.
Душная, непонятная, дорогая, не сохраняет прогресс
updating my review cuz the game changed the dev has improved a lot of the puzzles, the menu options were a much needed touch and it's very good an options menu was added The sort of the story mode isn't "by the book" as it tells mostly its own story while using the wiki's enviornments but it's still done much better, more unique, and more fun than most of the other backrooms games on steam that are popular (escape the backrooms and inside the backrooms). There are jumpscares in the main mode of the game but they're placed at decent points and being in the backrooms is enough to creep out anyone really. Even if you don't enjoy puzzles the game is still fine and they're not average "indie game" puzzles, each puzzle is made to fit with its level. Also turning down the vhs filter was a good idea, there was too much static to see some things properly before. if you're looking for an escape from genericness and kane pixels that is the crappy multiplayer backrooms games then this is the one you're looking for. Really excited for the wiki accurate liminal mode.
As someone who aint a fan of this style of game I gotta say i had a great time, very unsettling, gets the noggin joggin, would recommend.
LEVEL8后面的山洞有个看不见的墙不过去了!应该就是做到level8!我一开始以为BUG了,打了很多把都有个墙!
The Backrooms Exploration game is a unique and unsettling experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The game goes beyond just the Lobby (Level 0) by allowing you to explore much more over 10 different levels that are both eerie and claustrophobic. The game's sound design is superb, with ambient noises and unsettling music that will send shivers down your spine. The game's graphics have a very unique aesthetic, with attention to detail that adds to the overall sense of dread. The game's mechanics are simple yet effective, with a focus on exploration and survival as you try to find a way out of each level. However, the game can be quite challenging, and the constant threat of danger can be overwhelming. Overall, if you're looking for a horror game that will leave you feeling uneasy long after you've finished playing, the Backrooms Exploration game is an excellent choice.
must buy if you love backroom games
so far, the game is pretty great, (and I'm not gonna be too harsh because it literally came out yesterday)The horror element is awesome, the ambient noises are perfectly added in and the looks of the game are pixelated just enough for you to notice, but not enough for you to always be noticing it. The monsters are quite scary, even though they only jumpscare you (only in level 2 so idk if they chase or something later on) but the jumpscares are well spread out and timed, you never know when it's gonna happen. Now, the only problems I have with this game are:1: hard to find the areas you need to go to next2: you're unable to exit any minigames you enter, so it can basically softlock you for 30 minutes if you can't solve it3: no keybinds, you can't see what buttons do what and the game doesn't explain how to do certain minigames, it just assumes you already know how to solve the minigame or puzzle4: arrows in level 1 puzzle sometimes don't appear (happened for only the yellow one) so I was very confused and just guessed the combination. While these issues would probably make me not recommend this game, I have to say that this game has awesome vibes, spreads out the progression and jumpscares nicely, has great sound design, looks great, and has good progression. The issues above I think are going to get fixed with time, especially since this game is so new.For now, 7/10 on the game. Pretty much everything about it was amazing, but the lack of instructions and keybinds to show you what buttons to press to interact kind of take away from the experience (especially the lockpicking one, basically just rng if you get it or not)
