ZXC! ZXC!
In A Nutshell
🔵 Pros + Pretty well-made recreation of wartime events and atmosphere. + Interesting combination of puzzle, shooter, and story-driven game. + Overall decent storyline, even if somewhat stereotypical. + Good number of collectibles, secrets and achievements for completionists. + Interesting mini-games. 🔴 Cons - Outright bad voice acting quality, containing several errors and inaccuracies. - Some evident glitches and problems, but none game-breaking. - Somewhat lacking degree of interactivity with the environment. - Short duration even for this genre: only about 2-3 hours of content. Ash Of War narrates the story of Joe, an American boy deciding to follow the footsteps of his father, joining the army, to find out the reasons behind his attachment to military life, and aswell a purpose in life. This title is not always about wartime life, as in several sections you will live through scorches of Joe's past civil life, and find out the events that led him to the choices he made. This is a side-scrolling narrative focused game, featuring different environments each having a specific objective to complete (finding something, reaching a destination, kill enemies...), some NPCs to interact with and know more about their stories, hard to spot collectibles that unlock additional entries in the diary about lore. In addition, also puzzles and on-rail shooter sections are available throughout the adventure, they can result a bit challenging but never very hard. Several mini-games are available to successfully perform certain actions, such as healing wounded allies on the battlefield. They sometimes go along with quick time events, requiring pressing multiple keys in a certain order, to perform actions. This system does not result annoying and gives some more interactivity to the adventure. Ash Of war is not without issues however, as the really sub-par voice acting cripples the narrative immersion greatly, while duration and amount of actual content are a bit on the short side, even for this genre. Interactivity with environment is aswell on the lacking side. In conclusion I'd say Ash of War is a decent Indie title, conveying the expected core elements of the genre and also adding some genuinely clever mechanics to the base formula. If you like wartime stories and this type of games, i'd still recommend this game, but to the average players, at least wait a discount for this amount of content. Exploration is performed in a classic side-scroller fashion, with movement limited to right and left, excluding special interaction with doors or staircases, allowing you to traverse the map inside buildings or into other areas. don't expect secret areas, secondary zones, or additional places to explore: as a story driven game, the plot locations are all you get in this sense. as expected. Combat is featured in some sections, sometimes as an on-rail shooter with reload, cover and headshot mechanics, featuring different types of enemies armed with heavy weapons, rocket launchers or rifles. Such sections are exclusively on vehicles, and are pretty rough for being a story-oriented game, as some enemies can even 1-shot you. Other types of combat include quick time event based fights, against on-foot enemies. Puzzles are of various types, such as finding a certain item to progress, put back in place map pieces, decode cyphers, or even explore dark caves to find hostages. One specific level is a big puzzle itself, and probably also the most challenging. 📖 Story This game features a story with dark tones, speaking of loss, traumas, and the madness of war. You will watch as the protagonist discovers the reasons behind his father's choices, while he himself gets absorbed in the horrors of the battlefield. It would be a great story if it wasn't for the terrible voice acting, disrupting narration in several occasions and making it more sound like a comical show for how bad it is. 👊 Combat System N/A 💰 Content & Pricing Priced at 15€ base tag, and offering 2-3 hours of decent quality content, i'd say purchase at full price is recommended only to fans of the setting and/or genre, but i suggest players not particularly into this type of games to wait for a decent discount, or at least until all issues are fixed, especially voice acting. 🔗 Balance & Challenge Combat sections and some puzzles can be rough and require a few tries, but challenge level is not very high overall, as expected.
Technical Analysis
🎥 Graphics Decently realized 3D models, backgrounds, and effects. The quality is not brilliant, but for an indie game it's on average standards, and more than acceptable. The atmosphere of some sections is recreated well and even positively surprised me a few times. 🔊 Sound Sound effects are average, while voice acting most of the time is terrible. 🔩 Performance & Stability Never got any issue [i7 4820K, 16GB RAM, GTX1080 played at 4K resolution]. 💻 Artificial Intelligence N/A 🏠 Quality of Life Overall nothing to complain about, menus end interface do the job, aswell as gameplay systems, i found no problems about this. 🐛 Bugs & Issues Some graphical glitches are present like clipping or objects being seen through walls. Overall bugs are mostly minor and do not influence gameplay much or at all. No huge problems are present.
Conclusion
Ash Of War is an overall decent story-driven indie, that would be much better with actually good voice acting as narration is a fundamental part in this type of game. But still, even with this problem, the game is pleasant, and falls short only on content amount, somewhat, but is definitely a good choice for lovers of the genre. Oh man. Ash of War is really not a good game at all. I'm just going to give a brief rundown of the game, and you can of course decide for yourself.
Story
The story is fairly tired. Kid has a father who was a soldier. Kid thinks he can share with/understand his dad if he also becomes a soldier. Flash forward and kid is now a teen, and has become a soldier. He is then faced with the realities of war. Definitely has been done before and with much better writing. For one thing, the translations are terrible, and because of this, there is a temptation to forgive bad writing as a result, but in this case, bad writing was also poorly translated. All in all, this aspect of the game is actually the best thing Ash of War has to offer, and it is sub par at best.
Gameplay
Whereas the suspect storytelling was probably the best aspect of this game, the gameplay is certainly the worst. I've read reviews that state the gameplay never gets annoying or frustrating. That is definitely not matching up with my own experience. At its most basic, Ash of War functions as a side scrolling walking simulator. However, the controls are stiff, and even turning from right to left feels like a chore. Literally. Then you have the mini games that are designed to add some gameplay to an otherwise lacking experience. The result is plenty of frustration. The little maze mini game wasn't bad except that there is a timer for the back half of the sequence, and no indication of how long is on said timer, which definitely leads to at least one restart. Then there are the shooting mini games, which mostly consist of you in the back of a vehicle firing at enemies in other vehicles. However, the aiming mechanic is completely broken and so you have to sort of fire and hope for the best. This is made clear with the first little "shoot the cans" mini game, but made insanely frustrating during the two "chase" sequences, which also last way longer than they should. Outside of that, you can pick up collectibles here and there. Of course. The actual map mini game wasn't so bad though, so at least one section will be relatively frustration free. All this doesn't even go into the slow entering and exiting animation, the fact that things often don't line up properly leading to your avatar disappearing briefly then ending up where it should have been to begin with. Also, in between acts, you are presented with little story vignettes, but again, so slow and unnecessary, and you have to manually advance each of what is typically three or four story pieces presented on pictures and such. This should definitely have simply been an add to the menu rather than something you have to sit through.
Graphics
Also not good. The devs clearly enjoyed Valiant Hearts: The Great War and were hoping to emulate this to some extent despite the setting being Afghanistan in Ash of War. However, they didn't do it well, and so most things in the game are grainy and washed out looking. It's actually not a terrible looking game, but it's also not good. There are of course occasional exceptions in the game, but yeah, overall, not stellar.
Audio
First off, the voice acting is abysmal. Not only is it a half hearted attempt at sounding somber, but the voice actor can't even pronounce a lot of the words in the script, which is weird, since they could have just done it in their native language and offered subtitles INSTEAD of offering a really bad version of English for us to sit through. The rest of the audio tracks aren't so bad, but man that main voice actor really is terrible.
Verdict
I feel Ash of War is a great example of a game people think they should enjoy, and in my opinion, this has impacted its review scores on Steam, but for me, this was an almost unbearably slow paced, poorly acted, poorly written, poorly designed game with at best, average graphics. I'd personally advise going with a game like Valiant Hearts or 11-11 Memories instead. You'll find a much deeper and enriching experience rather than this really bad ball of frustration.
Ash of War is an interesting game, but it has one of the worst executions I've ever seen. Story: In Ash of War you plays as Joe. Joe is a young gamer who loves playing military shooters and when he grows older he decides to follow in the steps of his father who is a soldier in the military. Well the story picks up in the war as Joe has to go through to military situations. When you start the game it says it's based on a true story and I don't know if I believe that, I mean it's entirely possible, but however I will still criticize the story, because it's really poorly told. The best way I can describe the story is pretty disjointed. It's split into three segments, the home life, training and the army. The first two segments are alright and paced pretty well, but once you get to the army it just feels like a re-tread of the usual army stuff you see in movies and other games and it's actually pretty disappointing. Graphics: Ash of War, for an indie game looks pretty damn good. The graphics aren't anything special, but for an indie game it's actually really well designed. The environments are really well designed and for an indie are quite impressive, but however there are other problems. A lot of the character models are reused throughout and since the game wants you to be emotionally attached, it becomes difficult to do so, since all you do is fight the same enemy over and over again and save the same soldiers. Audio: When I reviewed Play with Me, I, at the time considered the voice acting in that game the worst I have ever heard in my entire life, but somehow Ash of War tops it. To explain how bad the voice acting is pretty difficult, without you actually hearing it. Another thing I found pretty immersion shattering is the fact that the game takes place in America and the main character Joe is voiced by someone with a really thick accent and when he was a kid he could speak fluent english without an accent. Gameplay: Ash of War is pretty much a simple side-scrolling adventure where each level you get to do different things from a on rails turret section that was super hard to control, a terrible maze level and a bunch of other stuff. Sadly none of it is fun and it ends up being quite annoying. To elaborate on the gameplay a little bit, I'll talk about the main two mechanics: shooting and QTEs, first the shooting. The shooting is really really bad. The cursor jumps all over the place and is super hard to control and it feels like Joe is stuck in a endless drunk mode, but this doesn't hold a candle to the QTEs. The quick time events are absolutely dreadful and kills the game entirely, especially the desert fight. The QTEs aren't that hard, but most of the time they move really fast and are super hard to hit on time and if you fail them, this could send you back minutes back and replay the same section over and over again. Verdict: Ash of War is really disappointing. It's a great concept with a poor execution, it's short, has terrible gameplay, absolutely atrocious voice acting and other issues make this game a rather disappointing experience. If you want a good military game with a really good story go and play Spec Ops The Line. Pros: + Graphics are decent Cons: - Some of the worst voice acting on this planet - Terrible gameplay - Story is disjointed Final Rating: 3/10 If you liked this review please consider joining https://steamcommunity.com/groups/completingthebacklog and https://steamcommunity.com/groups/ImperialReviews
Attractive and very emotional story. It was difficult to take a rest and stop playing. I remember Firewatch game with its own atmosphere. The Ash of War has its own atmosphere and true story - that's great!
You know, mostly I am lazy for reviews... But not today. It happened - my friends, my bros have finally released their game. I can't explain how proud I am of them. 3 years ago they сame up with an idea of a game. On the hard way to release they've met a bunch of problems, but they did it in the end. I will write my own feeling, honestly. I hope my bros will understood me. Pros: * Good story about the usual guy, who wanted to serve his country, but ran into troubles. * Very desent graphics for the indie project. * A lot of refrences to different movies & games, that you must find your own. * Interesting & bit intriguing story. * Sometimes a bit tightened, but good story duration as whole. NOT boring. * Locations are well-drawned, no comments. Just great. * Soundtrack is great. Cons: * I wanted to see more interactivity, but won't push You hard. This is Your first game. Next time, I will ask for more :D * I will repeat - sometimes a bit tightened, but good story duration as whole. * I would like to hear a little more intelligible speech of the protagonist [strike] (looks faded against the rest of the characters). [/strike] * Probably
taliban stone killing scene
was excess. 7,5/10. Hope to see more cool stuff from you in the future. Love you. Peace!
I've seen this game in my recommendations and decided to try. The game is simple, but if you seek short and interesting story about the actual issues, then it's your choice.
