About
"Seek inspiration from people, city streets and poisons of the mind. Grow your passion, but take care of your sanity or succumb to madness".
A new life
Welcome to exploring the decadent 19th century alternative history, and a roguelite game about surviving as a classical artist in 19th century, while painting masterpieces.
A survival game, featuring feelings
You will be challenged by 66 unique feelings (each with a different effect), along with poverty and other wordly troubles. Hundreds of cards represent the psyche of your artist's mind, and life in Oportunia, the city known as the world capital of contemporary art.
A rich variety of interaction mechanics
All these artistic, amusing, horrible or lustful details of life are presented as hundreds of lovingly painted cards that can be combined, collected, talked or thought about, visited, read or interacted and so on, resulting in a vast diversity of results, creating new cards and new opportunities of interaction. The creation of this game was inspired by a cult classic of similar format, but different vibes.
Mortal challenges
Life of the artist is not easy. Poverty, physical ailments, sanity loss and other challenges regularly result in permadeath (a variety of permadeaths, beginning with dying to disease and ending with drinking oneself to death), followed by a tactful overview of your life (often miserable, addiction-fuelled, yet passionate) and legacy.
During your life, unpleasant feelings will evolve from bad to worse if not dealt with. You will have to battle conditions like frustration, anxiety, anger, guilt, sadness, suicidal thoughts, and multitudes of other issues, including habits, addictions and temptations of various kind.
Painting, and other pleasures
As an artist, you can paint your sufferings into spectacular masterpieces, or counter them with pleasant feelings such as love, pure delight or peace. If all else fails, you can always seek solace in the Bar Avenue establishments, hoping to drown the bleak thoughts in drink or more exotic soothments. Roguelite fans may enjoy the iron person mode.
18 different endings
You may win numerous minor victories and a selection of grand victories. To win the grand victory, you must create a painting that will change the world.
As your life evolves, unravels and expands in Nova Oportunia, life-changing secrets, ideas and experiences reach you. These can be thought about, developed, and in time, turned into the paintings that will change the world for thousands or millions of people, leaving a truly majestic legacy of your life.

Above illustration created by T. Viikman by hand (and without any AI), like the most of all ingame graphics (and images on this Steam page). Read below about the game's limited use of premade procedural visual variations based on historical free-use-licence art.
Being professional artists ourselves (including traditional painters) it is extremely important for us to stress that we’re against unethical use of ai.
While every other part of Artist Life Simulator is drawn and painted by hand during multiple years of the development by a small team of three devs, the game contains also limited reproductions of historical 18/19th-century illustrations/paitings/materials and (in accordance with their licence, just like memes) their procedural versions (and versions of versions) for illustrating ingame oil paintings and situations that inspire the paintings.
The world was simpler when Artist Life Sim was in development. Practical “ai visuals” didn’t exist yet because they were too primitive to be considered problematic by anyone - but they did work as messy impressionist oil painting illustrations (while still needing months of manual work to become usable).
We hope - even if there’s a justified rage burning in your heart against ongoing misuse of AI- you differentiate our old indie passion project from products that (unlike ours) use AI unethically, irresponsibly or predatorily.

Having played it, it's just a worse Cultist Simulator. Graphically, Mechanically, and just in general. The only positive thing about this is the voice acting which was kinda nice. Genuinely would not have purchased it if it wasn't in a bundle for another product I wanted at cheaper rates.
Takes a bit to get a hang of it, pretty difficult and complex. But kinda fun and gets super interesting the more you get to understand the mechanics as a player.

Cultist Simulator without the human sacrifice or cannibalism... at least none i have found so far. Great art (its about art right?) I love this type of game... historical max player count of 24 is super depressing to me. This game deserves more players.
This game is a delight, the cards, the art, the story, the lore, the possibilities, the crazy things that can happen at the complition of every action, and the rush you feel when the final project is being made feels amazing, suddently everything is at stake, you are extra careful with everything, health, sanity, money, trying to survive till that final masterpiece is finish. This game is not only inspired and obviously possible thanks to the success of Cultist Simulator, but contrary to that one (that I love btw), this one is easier to navigate and enjoy without feeling lost all the time, it feels more balanced and curated (pun intended, and disclaimer, Cultist is a masterwork of Alexis, and he is a character that I'm sure enjoys unbalanced games that make the players suffer until they figure out what to do, haha). So, if you are reading this, give this game a chance, along with the DLC, and enjoy creating art and living, or dying a lot, that can happen too, haha!
I would usually be SO mad at a game like this. But in this case I'm not
It's just way too random. You can prepare, use a lot of high-level inspirations, make a great painting. But then you go to sell it and instead of money your get "discredited painting" and nasty status condition. It would be terrible experience if game wouldn't be just easy overall. The only permanent "addiction" (Cost of Living) is easily managed by investing in alternative currency (
Strong Alcohol
) and then everything else is managed by just waiting. So - there's that. Game is okay-ish, good for spending a bit of time and if you are ribbon hunter - 100% achievements aren't very time consuming. Full price is a bit high for the amount of content provided, so I suggest buying it on sale.
有点意思,但没有中文一直翻译太累了,玩不下去。希望能早点出中文。
I was not aware that this used AI for a good chunk of the art before buying it and playing it a bunch. Fairly disappointing for an art-based game to use it, but honestly this is a case where it is somewhat understandable to me? (Though I'm definitely pretty firmly against it in most cases). I'm mostly disappointed it's not more up front enough about it that I could've been aware of it sooner. I appreciate that it was all trained on public-domain work at the very least. Gameplay-wise, I really like it! It can be fairly frustrating when you continuously get ailments or unwanted conditions and aren't given the tools to deal with it, but I really like the resource management aspect anyway when you're not getting pummeled with bad luck! I really like the illustrations and the style (especially the obviously human-drawn art), and the concept by itself is very fun. I like the music a lot too, I like how it dynamically changes depending on what cards you have currently and things like that. If you don't mind the use of AI image generation for the paintings, I would recommend it.
Nice little timesink, although there's some luck involved. You won't last long the first few times you play, but once you get the hang of it, a fun way to spend a few hours.
I don't like the fact that it uses AI to create paintings, but gameplay-wise it is a very enjoyable game. I am either a broke artist, a sick artist, a crazy artist, or all of the above. The stats are highly random and you might get frustrated at some point where you put in 1-16 worth of inspiration and get 1 worth in return. Very true to the irl artists, and the ending feels rather sarcastic too. 9/10 with one off for AI usage.
