I came for Michael and the diverse customization options but stayed for the puzzles. While I did enjoy the uniqueness of the art, it could be improved at times (the backdrop especially missed shading etc, but i suppose that's not that much of an issue if you don't mind that), as well as certain sprites just kind of looked goofy or cliche in a way. The music also didn't really strike me as much when compared to other visual novels.. The main story wasn't spectacular so to say and I was very disappointed to learn that it's mostly linear, with only small changes on the outcome of the story, as well as not as much depth in the characters as I would've liked. Yes, they were well written with wonderful personalities but I would've loved to know more about their story instead of the general things, or routes for example, but maybe I'm just very picky. BUT. The voice acting was excellent, I'd love to see this more in other games as well. Especially the voice acting of the alchemist as they are the protagonist was a pleasant surprise; it's not often that that happens. And i absolutely did enjoy racking my brain to figure out the puzzles (still haven't completed everything yet) SPOILERS Personally, I did quite dislike the whole 'grr I'll get you next time alchemist!!' thing ronan kept doing every chapter; i personally would've enjoyed another outcome or the possibilities of bad endings instead of a linear story like Arcadia Fallen, but even though I have lots of critiques for this game I cannot say that I haven't enjoyed playing it. Completing the first few chapters kind of took me a while because the main story was so cliched, but the dialogue is written wonderfully.
A lovely game. :)
Good
I think this game is somewhere between a 6 or 7 out of 10 for me, but tbh it is worth playing even if it's just so that you can play the sequel right after. The sequel is fantastic! (and this game would be a strong 7/10 if it wasn't for Mime's varying mic quality haha If you can overlook that, I think you're gonna have a great time with this game.)
The setup is pretty basic but what makes it worth the time is the cast. Five companions, four romanceable, all written with more care than "war between magic and humanity" strictly requires and the game seems genuinely more interested in whether you like these people than in whether the plot surprises you. Mime in particular, the platonic only companion, has more people online begging for a route than actually landing on the ship they wanted, which says something about how well he's written even without one. The alchemy minigame is a nice change of pace early on and then overstays its welcome a little by the late game, especially once the puzzles start stacking more symbols than the tutorial ever prepared you for. It's not deep enough to be the game's second pillar, just distracting enough to occasionally get in the way of wanting to be back in a conversation. It's a small game with a big heart, made by a first time studio that clearly cared more about writing people who feel like people than about padding runtime or complicating a plot that didn't need it.
I came across Arcadia Fallen II being recommended to me me and got curious about the first game. Boy, am I glad I played! Just finished my first go-through. I played a kind-hearted woman who was timid at first but grew into a leader who brought everyone together with Reason, Diplomacy, and even Determination when needed. Right off the bat the art work is lovely. However, it is the voice acting and story that really shine. Truly, I haven't heard acting in games this great in a long time. I laughed, I cried, I stayed up far too late twice, and I enjoyed the puzzles. ♥
