I might be in the minority here, but I enjoyed Arcade Spirits: The New Challengers much more than the original. Everything is improved, and the characters you interact with are much more fleshed out. This game has better character design, better voice acting, and a better overall story line. And the inclusion of the Fist of Discomfort 2 mini game was a nice addition too. Some content warnings to be aware of before buying the game: There is LGBTQ+ representation among several characters in the story. and each of your main companions can be romanced, regardless of your avatar's appearance or pronouns. So if that bothers you, you should skip this one. There are situations in the game that depict bullying, gatekeeping, bigotry, harassment, depression, and self-harm. If those are triggers for you, you will probably want to skip this game. Overall, Arcade Spirits: The New Challengers is an improvement over the first game. If you liked the original, you'll like this one. It's a quick 8-10 hour play through, and has high replay value because of the different romance options. It's worth your time, and is definitely worth picking up, especially if it's on sale.
The characters are likable and have a decent amount of depth and I wouldn't mind seeing them in follow-up titles. The game was light and fun and it renewed my childhood interest in visual novels. I'm also curious about the Ren'Py software the game was made with.

One of the best VN out there! Loveable characters and a gaming focused story :)
Years ago, i got a game called Arcade Spirits in a charity bundle and much later i even ended up playing it. It blew me out of the water at the time and I'm not really the kind of video gamer that goes for visual novels (or maybe dating sims? choices matter? idk the exact genre for visual novels with optional romance). It was packed with heart and i can safely say it holds a place in my list of favorite video games of all time. I've got the list open in front of me right now! Naturally, when i found they made a sequel i had to grab it. Arcade Spirits: The New Challengers. This was a while ago but i have just gotten around to playing it. They came back bigger and bolder and bursting with so much everything that i just cant organize my words correctly, i just love it. I love it. I laughed, I wept, and I feel like i was given so much more than i put in and there's much more there than just what I saw on my initial go. An instant favorite of mine and fantastic as a standalone experience and as a follow-up to the already fantastic initial game. I can't really recommend it enough, especially if you're a fan of visual novels or stories or the idea of being in an arcade. It holds up to even the highest of standards.
Good sequel. Didn't match the extremely high bar set by the first game for me, but considering it was one of three games to ever make me cry, that would have been quite the feat to pull of twice. The new characters were fun (like the first game, I can see where certain criticisms are coming from but I had a good time) though Zapper (my romantic route this time) didn't feel as fleshed-out as Naomi last time, and I wasn't really all-in on wanting to have a happy romantic ending with any of the characters, but the only options are happy ending or not dating. Writing and plot development were solid (I see why it wouldn't land well on everyone but it landed great on me), even if the messaging (don't let trying to be the best get in the way of building friendship and community) didn't hit me as hard. I dunno, I had a good time but it felt like redo with more polish and higher production values but less to say that actually resonated with me. As I'm writing this sounds like a very lukewarm review, but it's still solidly a good game and it was worth playing.
2nd game in the series, I like both quite a lot. It means a lot to me the way it talks about depression, and mental health, and what you actually want to get out of life. Occassionally the writing was a bit too millenial for my taste, but that's alright - I suspect I'm not really the target audience anyway lol. I would also like it if the devs could add more colour options, because I had a difficult time making picking colour combos for my clothes that looked good (maybe that's a skill issue lol). At the end of the day I really like this game, and if they do make a 3rd game in the series I will probably like that too.
Silly, Colorful and Fun: The Sequel!
I absolutely loved the time I spent with this game, and was sorry to see it end. As usual from Fiction Factory Games, great writing, great characters, lovely art and music, and a really easy choice system that makes it easy for multiple runs through the story. Just a fantastic game from start to finish. <3
