If you've already played the regular version of Aquarist then you pretty much know what to expect from a VR version of the game and I liked it even more in VR! Watch a snippet of gameplay here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMmraL9tC78 So in the game you start as a teenager who receives an appreciable budget from his father to place and decorate his first aquarium (this is of course in preparation for the father to clean his aquarium completely later on). But in addition to the campaign you also have a sandbox mode where you can be free in decorating your aquarium and choosing the fish species, since you have an unlimited budget in this mode. Just take a look at what a beautiful aquarium I have put together in this mode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izuJHk2sN5I You can keep fresh or salt water aquariums with a very wide variety of fish and also the size of the fish.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/EB5UgmgPFxI This is a chill, relaxing aquarium builder / sim type game. It is in Early Access so content currently is very limited. There's a normal story mode & a sandbox mode. It took me less than 2 hours to beat the story mode and that was with me taking my time and trying to build the best aquariums for each level possible. I believe if you just rush through the content, you can probably beat it in less than an hour. The sandbox mode is just one level with one aquarium where basically you have unlimited resources. Unfortunately, you cannot save your progress here. In fact, you have to beat the game (and not repeat the last level) in order to be able to save the aquarium(s) of your dreams, which consist of two aquariums in an unkept garage looking level. Although you can clean around some if you wish. There are 24 types of fish currently, along with 5 decorations & 4 rock types. You also have several plants & corals & lights. There's also several tools you'll be using including: the bucket (to fill water), fish food, brush, water filter, heater, net, mop, & garbage bag (no, I'm not kidding). Game was running at a steady 90 fps. You do have full locomotion or teleportation available, along with smooth or snap turning. You can play seated or standing. There is a button crouch to pick stuff off the ground, but you can also manually crouch. You have slight magnet hands, but you do basically almost have to touch the item to pick it up. Most interactions are really highlight & grab or point & click. There are no graphical settings. I did have fun playing this game. It's got a very relaxing & satisfying gameplay loop. I enjoyed making the best aquarium possible, given the limited items to play with. However, content is very limited. This game needs a lot more items, tank sizes, fish, etc. to give it long-lasting appeal. It's off to a nice start in Early Access though, especially given the budget price upon release. More content is planned by the devs. We shall see. Rate 6.5/10. As is rating given the price.
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. Aquarist VR is an Early Access paid VR game that was ported from a 3D game. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played so-so, sounded ok. CONS: - Tutorial is broken, where you go downstairs to tell dad, you can not teleport to required area to work on his tank. - You can stick your face into the walls and objects by teleporting into them, putting you into black space, not sure how to get out of black till you turn around. - Might not be able to pick up small objects that drop to the floor, if it sets the floor level too high. Maybe wait to buy this on sale after release from EA. I got a free key for this from the Steam Curator program. Having your hands collide with objects in VR definitely has a place but it made placing stuff inside aquariums too difficult, also good luck if you drop something on the floor, you'll never get it back. Finally the "father" stared at me for the entire tutorial and it was terrifying I like the idea but it just isn't fun to play. Maybe try making the tablet a menu you can open on your writst? not an object you have to carry around, collides with objects, and can be lost?
GAMEPLAY
🔵Aquarist VR is an identical VR adaptation of the original Aquarist game. 🔵Actively pick up, place and adjust your aquarium artefacts and fish by hand. 🔵Graphically very good indeed. 🔵Early Access title, more improvements (hopefully VR specific) to come. 🔵Slowly relive through some childhood experiences (tutorial) until you get your own Aquarium. 🔵Tested on OCULUS Q1 + Q2 via Wireless LINK. 🔵Noticeably better performance on the Q2
VIDEO LINKS & MORE
🍿 Sim UK REVIEWS and FIRST LOOK GAMEPLAY 🍿 LIVESTREAMS on Sim UK TWITCH 🍿 WATCH GAMEPLAY ON SIM UK ULTIMATE REALISM JOIN OUR STEAM CURATOR Group Here
POSITIVES
✔️Graphically this looks awesome in VR. ✔️You can free-move or teleport with optional ability to turn in 30 degree increments. ✔️It still looks really cool, once you get a fish tank completed with fish, coral and lights. ✔️You can be quite precise with object placement. ✔️Everything seems `almost` to scale., which adds to the immersion. ✔️All the same content that was available in the original. ✔️Very reasonable price. ✔️Sandbox mode allows you some extra freedom (but not ultimate).
NEGATIVES
❌Clearly a conversion and not designed specifically for VR. ❌When teleporting you cannot turn the angle you want to be facing. ❌The emptying of the bucket into the first tutorial fish tank can be hit and a lot of MISS. ❌I dislike how items appear, then fall onto the floor. ❌|Lacking freedom, you HAVE to complete the childhood memories tutorial, no way to skip. ❌The tutorial is actually quite poor, sometimes it is not clear why something is not working. ❌No control over the gravel placement, despite having the dexterity. ❌Gravel bags are endless, never empty. ❌Tanks get dirty crazy fast, you cannot even enjoy your creation. ❌Cannot ♥♥♥♥ down the lights in the room to enjoy your setup. ❌Too few items to be really able to make anything extra special. ❌There are numerous areas where you get stuck, end up inside of the wall or general item flip-out.
STAR FEATURES
⭐Graphically awesome. ⭐Lighting is great. ⭐the concept and price are both really decent.
RECOMMENDATIONS
💡Allow players to skip the entire tutorial experience and start in the shop. 💡Improve some of the hit-boxes for item positioning. 💡Make tablet something you can put in a backpack and carry. Movement is hell in this game. The smooth locomotion is too slow and there's no option to increase your movement speed. Teleporting gets you stuck in walls you can't get out of. There's no option to turn off "comfort mode" where you black out whenever you get too close to a wall, it's very disorienting. And only one job for "full release" version? This game should have stayed in early access.
Пройдено на Valve Index

Some of it works, teleportation is broken in many places (early game), collision is weird when placing things next to each others. the graphics are even lower than the normal non-vr version. Some of the mechanics work differently from desktop version. water bucket empties itself very easily when moving around, it needs more weight when filled so it doesn't flip around so fast I couldn't find how to sell things nor see the money. I made a serious "first build" in the basement, only to decorate it too much and run out of money before I could complete the objective to add 3 fishes, I only had money for 2. While testing it for an hour, I struggled and goofed off for 30 minutes then played "serious" for an other 30 minutes, only to close the game and see Steam didn't record the gameplay... pretty disapointing, I could've posted a video about me having fun by my own means. Experience was clearly of low quality, it clearly feel abandoned, it wasn't build for vr at it's core but the adaptation to vr is "fine", it's not skyrim vr level of "it just works", but still on the lower end.
I don't know if its just me, but moving in this game is a task and chore, not to mention the strange bug of shrinking things when you go from sitting to standing mode. I get this game is in early access, but it would be appreciated if you could make movement easier. In the tutorial upstairs was fine, but DOWNSTAIRS? all it wanted me to step on was the little things usually in the middle of doorways. (don't know what they're called) In smooth motion I could move fine, but basically forcing people to use the much more sickening mode of transportation just seems like it wasn't properly tested, or was ignored. In the basement, it seemed fine at first, got a couple fish, cleaned the tank, decorated it a little. then I did the quest, and the girl basically came into the room and screwed everything up, half of the room was inaccessible in both smooth and teleport mode, in smooth it just made me want to continue walking on and on, even when I restarted the game, or tried transporting items, but i couldn't save because it was on the other half of the room. In teleport mode It just wouldn't let me go past the fish tank, like there was an invisible wall or something, the only fun I got out of that was pretending I was a mime for not even ten seconds. this game is around its 5 month mark, and I'm happy with how the game LOOKS, but play-wise? if you ignore the movement issues, shrinking bug (or as I call it the kids play set bug) only one quest (which I can understand) i'd say its a pretty good game, might even be great, but its too unplayable for me to give it a good review. maybe once its sorted out the kinks and developed more, that's when its good to play, if you want early access i'd say its okay to get it now, but if you don't want to loose your money to the swear jar, id suggest staying away.
