The voiceover was really good—the actor used such a creepy voice, kinda otherworldly, which really fit the game. The game's atmosphere was super strong; like i could feel the water in my throat and the mud under my boots, which a lot of games don't really have. Overall, aquaphobia was a kinda cool experience.
'Aquaphobia' is a short first person poetic artwork by Jakob Kudsk Steensen that presents a distinctive experience blending inner psychological landscapes with exterior ecosystems and creating a poetic form of environmental storytelling. The game features shifting environments and a narrative that unfolds through atmospheric exploration. Completing the game took me roughly 10 minutes, and it is designed without Steam achievements, keeping the focus entirely on the experience. As a free title, it offers a single ending and lacks a save feature. The simplicity of the gameplay makes it accessible to players of all skill levels, with clear instructions and a straightforward objective: explore the story and the multiple environments as a treatment for aquaphobia. Based on the overall challenge, I would rate the difficulty as 1 out of 10. 'Aquaphobia' begins in the underground mud tunnels beneath Red Hook in Brooklyn. A morphing water microbe serves as the guide and leads the viewer through scenes involving roots, water, plants, and sub city infrastructure. Throughout the experience, the microbe recites a poem that centers on a strained breakup between itself and the viewer. The emotional tone of this relationship becomes a lens through which the narrative examines the fear of water and the larger human relationship to rising sea levels. This free game was originally created in virtual reality in 2017 and reintroduced in 2023 in a new first person poetic format. This updated version continues to highlight the link between interior emotional states and shifting ecological conditions. Overall, 'Aquaphobia' presents an unconventional and thoughtful approach to environmental storytelling through its combination of poetic narration and immersive world building.
