This game is not for someone who is looking for a deep narrative or long experience. Its a simple and short Visual novel with a handful of RPG battles that mostly serve as plot devices. However this game IS for someone who wants to spend 3 dollars and leave an hour or two later with a smile and a sense of satisfaction. The humor in this game is all about video game parody, puns, and silliness. If you like that sort of thing i recommend this game. A specific naming pun near the end of the game had me laughing to myself for a while. Overall i would honestly call this less of a game, more of a neat short story.
Look at this kid, here, all fresh faced and new And not knowing anything! He has no idea What he's in for! He thinks the hard part's over But it's not! And maybe he needs a little help! Maybe My purpose is to take everything I'm learning And put it - put it into a SHOW! Avenue Q - What Do You Do With A B.A. In English? (Reprise)
An amusing Visual Novel with rpg elements, or an amusing rpg with VN style cutscenes? You decide. There are a load of entertaining video game parodies in Antagonist. There’s ‘Loud,’ a spiky yellow haired hero with a giant boom box sword and headphones. There’s ‘Pink,’ the hero of time, with her ‘quadforce.’ There’s ‘Chefiroth,’ a silver haired chef’s hat wearing villain. And several others. I won’t spoil them all here, but they’re very amusing. There are basically two endings to the game and I’ve only gotten one. It’s pretty short and I enjoyed it, but I’ve heard the second ending is much more difficult to get on account of the final boss being almost impossible to kill. I can see how that could happen, actually. The battle system is at first pretty straightforward, but unlike most rpgs, you can’t grind enemies to level up on your own. You will face an exact number of enemies in each playthrough and your levels, stats, and abilities are very much predetermined for each fight. What changes are the skills you use and what basically comes down to luck in the turn order. Your AI partner will follow a semi-random attack pattern, which if you're lucky enough to get in a turn right after they do, you can pick the same move they do, and you’ll both do a combination attack which is much better than most of the things you can do on your own. However, the AI will not match their attacks with yours and the chain is interrupted by enemy attacks, making this mechanic extremely random. You can’t buy gear, so you’re best off to buy about twenty to thirty potions and spend the rest of your money on revives. During my first playthrough, I only encountered a couple of fights where I had serious difficulty, and that was mostly due to multiple enemies repeatedly attacking one character or the other during the fight. This is rather hard to defend against. On the whole, Antagonist has a fairly entertaining story, marred by somewhat troublesome combat mechanics. A single playthrough will probably take you a couple hours and the price is pretty good for the content you get, so I’m recommending it. Oh, but don’t hit the F12 key. The steam overlay does NOT work and hitting F12 is the default key for dumping you back into the main menu without saving. My only other complaint about the game is the blip beeping noise it makes with the text. You can hit a button to display it all at once, but that makes all the blips happen at the same time, which sounds very strange. Should be an option to turn off the text blip noises.
Antagonist is a cute, short visual novel/RPG-lite with an endearing cast and a fun plot. It's cliche, for sure, but sort of revels in its own triteness and uses it for its comedy. Combat is ATB JRPG-style, and works primarily on using combination attacks between the protagonist and your AI partner. It works well against a single target, which is a majority of the fights, but multi-target fights really bring out the issue with the system: you need to go directly after your partner to use a combination attack, and the more enemies there are, the more difficult this gets, even with abilities that manipulate when your next turn will be. A certain three-target fight took me an almost unforgivable 15 tries to complete when the rest of the battles were largely a vessel for the story. Don't expect something you'll rave to all your friends about, but for $3, I'd say go for it.
Genre
Eine Mischung aus Visual Novel & JRPG
Story
Fazit

I liked the art style and the ability to change the direction of the storyline by your actions; different endings/playthroughs are always good, and you can tell the creator(s) put a lot of creative energy into this game. However, it still doesn't qualify as a good game for three main reasons: 1) it's got a poor plot, 2) it has terrible game mechanics, and most important of all: 3) it is nowhere near balanced. 1) The Plot (Spoiler Alert) The plot is unique, but so is any illogical story. It just doesn't add up. The Hero was never an actor, and yet this WHOLE time during acting, never actually hurt the main character (you)? Only when the main character gets confused does the hero suddenly actually become "what he's always been"? The plot is too forced, and just doesn't make any sense, and it's never resolved even by end game. 2) Game Mechanics All of your abilities are trash, they do no damage. BUT if you and your ally copycat, then they are ehh ok. Here's the kicker: you and your ally have to copycat each other SEQUENTIALLY. That means if an enemy goes before you or your ally, the deal is off. Oh, and you tend to be the slowest character, while your ally is the fastest, so good luck syncing up. Also, your ally seems to randomize their moves, so good luck expecting them to copycat you. Oh, and if you're trying to copycat them and get the chance to go right after them- nope you're not in the clear yet because now you have to consider that your skills cost energy whereas hers don't, so you probably couldn't copy her even if you wanted to. Not to mention, why copy your ally? If copying your ally is the only way to really impact the fight, then are you really playing a game, or watching a movie? Players make decisions to win games, they outwit their enemies. This pigeonhole game design doesn't allow for truly playing the game. 3) Game Balance In case you're wondering how the game seems possible, it's because depending on the path you choose to follow, the game is easier. For example, play the bad guy and if you end up fighting Ralph, it's actually impossible. He has multiple abilities that one-shot you, (and of course, you cannot increase your health or any stat or even anything for that matter in ANY WAY ALL GAME). Mid-game you can use Darkness to pretty much beat anything, and your ally is actually useless by comparison. Basically, when not in Darkness, your abilities suck. When in Darkness, they're OP and you don't even care what your ally is doing or even if they die. The whole copycat game mechanic integral to outmaneuvering the enemy goes completely in the trashcan with Darkness, but even that is hopeless against Ralph who literally one-shots and permastuns you. Of course, you don't have to fight him if you choose to be the good guy, which is another example of pigeonholing and poor game design/balance. ______ Overall, I don't recommend this game. It's only $3, and if you want to try it, be my guest. I only got it for free as part of a humble bundle for something else. But you'll get more satisfaction from a Redbox movie. This game is not good, in fact the worst Steam I've ever played. I know it's not triple AAA, but as an Indie developer myself who has played dozens of fellow Indie games, this game is one of the worse. Save your money, and your time.
It starts as a really fun game that has lots of references to many other games. Names were changed of course. I even recognize the one from Borderlands series (thanks Ayan). It's funny and quirky and it helps that the D'vil is hot and Ralph is not that bad looking and at first you are like "Yeah! This is a good challenge!" And then... Then you get to a certain part and... You can maybe do one or two actions before you are constantly Staggered (stunned) and die over and over again. The challenge is sky high (it's not even a Boss!) on that one fight and since you can't control your partner (AI) or whom they target... Much less what moves they use... It's over in an instant. Staggered also means that your action bar is slowed so you have no choice but to just sit there and wait... While the enemies flail on you and... -.-" Also the way this game works... There is no grinding for levels. You get levels/skills given to you at certain points and that's it. Overall... That non-Boss battle just ruined it for me. Thanks for showing others what's it like to be entirely useless and powerless. Maybe one day I'll retry it and GET SUPER OVERLY LUCKY AND everything goes just right and all the STAGGERS MISS! (From the enemy side that is). Ah well. I'll take what fun and enjoyment I had and say thanks regardless. :>

RPG Maker strikes again! Antagonist is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." While pretty much every RPG Maker "game" is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction, here, the art seems to be non-asset flipped (as far as I can see), however, the cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction remains. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and not so untalented amateurs can use it as a substitute for the skills of a "professional" game development team. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers. Notably the author here couldn't work out how to use RPG Maker to make an RPG... and that's the only thing RPG Maker can do properly... except it's not even very good for making RPGs. Instead, we have a crap E-book/Interactive novel. Presumably the author couldn't work out how to use the craptastic Ren'Py visual novel construction set, so this E-Book is a matter of using RPG Maker top down view to shuffle between passages of text. Badly written text. Punctuated by occasional pointless RPG battles, making this a big like a really crap, badly written Fighting Fantasy novel. We know it's badly written because if they could write professionally, they'd be published authors. Instead, gamers have to put up with this non-game E-book trash that's written like a high school anime club dropout fanfiction. I can't stress how bad the amateur writing is here... but the fact they tried to self-publish a book on Steam using RPG Maker should tell you exactly how far you should go to avoid this trash. Needless to say this barely qualifies as a game and as far as books go, it's garbage. This has no value for PC gamers as a serious game. The poor quality of this E-Book is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 6 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality E-Book is to be expected. Antagonist is relatively cheap at $3 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the E-Book, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. Gamers who want a good retro JRPG experience would be better off playing the originals, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or Chrono Trigger. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
