This game feels good although I'm not sure it meets souls like tag. I will play further to see if it gets harder. 8/10
As the name implies, the story of the game revolves around the insurrection and defeat of the kingdom of Denkyira by the Asante Empire in 1701. Okomfo Anokye was a real-life religious figure of the Ashanti Empire who was said to have performed miracles in the service of unifying the Ashanti and defeating the Denkyira. In this particular setting, Anokye is protected and supported by the supreme god of the Akan people, here known as Onyankopɔng, who revives him upon death at checkpoint statues. In terms of gameplay, Anokye is a victim of over-animation that can't reliably indicate when an enemy is attacking you or if hits are landing. I don't want to fuss too much about that, because the team behind this game are seasoned animators and that's their core skillset. Also, the game has no lives system and is very generous with giving you movement options to meet its challenges so this isn't as much of an issue as one might assume. The goal is straightforward enough, navigate a level and retrieve a key (a blue orb in this case) that allows you to proceed through the level exit. There are 18 levels in total, separated by The Beginning and The End. The End is tonally different and begins to have more "video game" abstractions like sawblades and spiked platforms. One of the more interesting of Anokye's ideas is the use of a 'Bash' technique, in which you hold the right mouse button while over a floating orb that lets you fling Anokye in a select direction while also resetting your double jump. The game concludes with an animated cutscene depicting one of Anokye's most important miracles, commanding down a golden stool called Sika Dwa Kofi onto the lap of the Ashanti king Osei Tutu I, which would go on to be such an important symbol in Asante culture that it takes center stage of their flag. It's an interesting game, I learned quite a bit!
A pretty fun 2D platformer. I wish there was a little more of a narrative element because I loved what was there at beginning but overall a decent way to spend a few hours.
A unique game about something I knew nothing about (Ghanian folklore and art) and now know slightly more about is always good in my book. Clunky and awkward to control, the action doesn't really flow as much as I'd like, and controls are occasionally awkward, but Played around 45 minutes and while nothing blew me away, it's an intriguing little game, and well worth the $3 I spent on it. Call it a very soft "Yea pretty cool lil game"
