Amphora is a peculiar puzzle game that mixes story elements and physics. Amphora presents you with an unfamiliar world with a striking visual style inspired by all the shadow theatre traditions and colors of the world.

I've played through Amphora twice - once to finish the game; and a second time to see how the game played when I knew what I was doing. The first play though I got through in a reasonable time and only got stuck enough to look up a solution in the second-to-last level. Still things did feel a bit clunky, so I played through a second time and it was a breeze to play, which I guess shows that mechanically there's not that much wrong with the game. Probably the biggest downfall of Amphora is ambiguity. The developers have tried to as minimalist as possible both when it comes to instruction and the story telling. Ideally this could lead to an elegant game where you can work out everything from context. In Amphora's case though I felt like I got to the end of the game without even properly understanding all of the core mechanics, meaning that I couldn't get everything out of the game that it had to offer. In terms of the story I generally love a story that can be told without words, but some things just weren't conveyed clearly enough. The story that was conveyed didn't really do much for me. It ambled around a bit and I never really felt invested in any of the characters. Maybe some narration would have given them some actual personality and made them feel less generic? I don't know. The big strength of the game is it's shadow puppet aesthetic, and the mechanics are solid. Some might get lucky; click with the game; and be able to finish without running foul of the shortcomings. From my experience I can't really recommend it.
If you like vibrant colours then maybe you'd think this game is worth the price. It isn't. The story, if there is one, is difficult to piece together. Now don't judge me too harshly - I'm a guy and we all know guys have trouble if things aren't spelled out clearly for them. It could be that guys are not the target audience, or it could be the puzzles are just standalone imagery, and some poor sap decided there was a story there. Given that it is a pretty tame puzzle game and the tutorial is entirely minimalist or absent, even if you get stuck for a while, the play time to finish the game is not long at all. Also bear in mind it is not the sort of game you are going to come back to and play again. It sounds like I set my review up for a negative, but I gave it a positive. Why? I actually had a lot of fun messing with the core gameplay elements. Grabbing people and making them epileptic. Drawing the most massive chain to fill the screen with. Completing puzzles in the totally wrong way. Throwing calabash (bombs) at people's heads. Throwing people. Throwing cauldrons, rabbits, carts and horses. Just being a total delinquent. For that refreshing silliness, it is worth every cent.

While the game seems to work as it was intended to, it's still clumsy and frustrating for many who prefer or are more suited to mental challenges, making it inaccessible and unsatisfying. As other reviews have mentioned, the physics aspect is incredibly unpredictable and frustrating. I found it quite draining to do the same thing repeatedly, not because I was testing things out, learning as I went along, but because I couldn't physically handle what it wanted of me. You know, the thing I play games to avoid, being reminded of physical limitations of my disabilities lol I found some aspects required a speed and precision because the physics were unpredictable and the tiny window of optimal action. Like trying to spin a windmill so the it kicks up enough wind for me to connect the kite to a piece of string floating in the air. All on keyboard. It saps out the joy and makes you frustrated. Which makes it harder to appreciate the beauty and relaxing vibe the visuals and sound give. **Sound & Visuals** *Flawless. +The visuals are simplistic but stylistic. The colouring is vibrant but not extremely bright making it extremely easy on the eyes, and the contrast is good, making it easy to view. Every scene has a background paisley(?) style overlay which is non-obstructive but beautiful. It makes me think of those fancy china tea cups, where you take your time to really enjoy the tea. +Music is more just soft sounds in the background that make you think of wind chimes, with a giggling child sound occasionally being triggered. It's not jarring or annoying; nothing special, but suits its purpose while allowing the visuals to shine. **Controls** +Keyboard only support is a plus as it's is laptop accessible. -I found the controls annoying. It had a sluggish effect on the mouse/touchpad, making it less sensitive than usual, so I'd have to scroll across the mouse/touchpad multiple times to get across a small space. I didn't realise some items were movable and obstructive, rather than decorative, so often my path would be obstructed and my movements slowed down because I'd get stuck on a table, or the child's actual damn head! -The physics gave things a weird, simultaneously sped up and slowed down effect. With the physics sometimes providing a small window of optimal action and the sluggish controls slowing things down. **Conclusion** While the game isn't broken, problematic in content, or poorly advertised, it's still clumsy and unsatisfying for many who prefer or are more suited to mental challenges. A lot of love obviously went into this game and its presentation, but not enough went into gameplay accessibility, or on balancing physical challenges with mental puzzle challenges. For a game whose visuals and music promote a calming, contemplative vibe, it's strange some of the gameplay would be so frustratingly inconsistent, narrow timed and clumsy. This game would have been great with more work on the sluggish controls and more consistent physics factors.
A beautiful game telling a cute love story. Amphora feels like it was made by a shadow artist dipping their toes into game design and it shows. The loose controls and lack of level selection extenuate the finnicky nature of the puzzles in this engine. I would love to see the art team work with a more experienced developer on a different title. You're paying for the stunning visuals, not for the gameplay.
The game is pretty but playing gets tedious and boring very fast. Sometimes it's not logical and than I can't understand what it wants me to do. Why should sound bounce of fountains? I think it's annoying and not very rewarding.

Это невероятная красочная игра в стиле мозайки и приятной амбиент музыкой, но вы будете страдать, гейм механики ещё тот ужас. История милая, приятная. Сделано с душой, но в наше время её брать только по скидке.
