This review is going to be a neutral one. American University Life ~Welcome Week!~ is a nice short kinetic novel but it's more of a premise of the story. So it's really hard to judge. We play as a male MC who comes at a rather great university and is going to live in a dorm with four girls. Studying starts only in a week, so we get a nice opportunity to learn more about our roommates, to realize that everything is not that simple, that behind their easygoingness hides vulnerable nature. It'll take only about 2 hours to read. I have too many questions at the end of this first part. But as it's just the beginning I can't possibly complain about any plot holes, I hope everything will be explained later. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1725616812 By the way, the game was released on August, 1 in 2018. In a week the dev posted: “All this sounds fun and all, but from my end it is a very expensive journey to take. I'd like to apologize and say that hopes for AUL's sequel will take some time, so that I may work up the budget and work quality that is worth your time and money. I want to provide the best experience possible for those interested in playing AUL!” No more posts after it, I do hope that 'some time' won't be too long and will definitely happen. I'm kinda curious
what kind of uni has only 5 students, seems like a waste with such excellent facilities; what for to give a sports scholarship to a soccer player if there're not even enough players; what's wrong with Belleruche's family and hand...and lots of other moments
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1724820888 I liked art in this game, especially backgrounds. Night skies are amazing. CGs are pretty, I wish there was a gallery for them. All mature content here is two half naked roommates from time to time. Writing is rather enjoyable. Girls' personalities are revealed gradually and skilfully, it's really fun to learn about them. It's nice when the dialogues with different chars are written in that way that they create diverse ambiance. Nothing exciting happens during this week, it's a slice-of-life slow-paced narration but I really found it relaxing and admirable. Though the text needs proofreading, as there're many typos. And it's the first kinetic visual novel I was reading and wished for some options. There're some awesome kinetic novels where you either feel too absorbed by the story with no need to choose anything, or where you're too involved into the events that you feel like actually making those decisions with characters. But in this game there're so many opportunities to add choices and to make the whole experience so much more exciting. For example, MC's first girl was so far from my liking that I even thought about dropping the game. He spends most of his time with Leslie at first. And I found her personality so annoying, I literally hate ppl like this—intruding, doing what THEY want without even trying to be considerate to others. She seems either dumb or egoistic before we know her better. Anyway, it was irritating to see MC communicating with her most. Luckily for him, he didn't mind any of her antics, sometimes even on the contrary, grateful but...rawr...that made me even more sick. Not my type of main character, either. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1725648446 So, you may indulge in a week at uni dorm, no studying, just interacting with differently cute girls. Not everything is revealed story-wise but made me quite curious to learn more. I hope this project isn't abandoned and we're going to see the release of next parts. It needs more proof reading. This is not a story just the setup for a story. Like the first chapter of a 20 chapter book. Nothing happens but you get a tiny peek at the character of the people in the story. When the other 19 chapters are done it may be great but for now---not so much.
- boring - short - to expensive
Prelude & Review Information
First and foremost to be noted is the approximate length of the VN itself. On average, you'll take approximately 2 hours or less. Couple this with the fact that it's a kinetic novel (no choices and a turn off to a percentage of people) means you'll most likely be clicking off this page after reading this. Just, hold on. "Welcome Week" serves as a prelude to the rest of AUL. The release of which may take a significant amount of time. This being the maiden VN developed by Jammin' Rabbit, it's meant to grab an audience so that the subsequent games are of higher quality. Other VNs outside of the AUL brand will most likely be released first to meet that end. So, what you have here is a bite sized game whose story is still in limbo. All that said, is it really worth recommending? Yes, there's no doubt at all.
Now The Real Review Begins

UI
In VNs developed by new people to the scene, the UI and art usually suffers and is carried by the story. That is in no way the case here. Starting with the settings, sound and text speed is in sliders. This is a welcome implementation so as to further regulate your experience. Even the entire look of the UI is great with a minimalistic and clean HUD. Onto the UI during actual gameplay. The text box isn't separated clearly from the BG, CG, and sprites with an actual box. Instead, it cleverly uses a fade for transition. This was an amazing call as it allows you to get a proper look at the art without a rough line which gives pause. The blue shade even further adds to the atmosphere of the game while complimenting things like the cafeteria BG. The only critiques are the lack of a proper quick save/load. There is a quick menu in the bottom right corner, but it operates only as a shortcut to the normal save/load menu. The small animation to smooth the change in UI does get tiring after a while and theoretically should be faster or have an option to have it removed. All in all though; it's great. The regular art is absolutely superb as well. The sprites are beautiful and far from bland. The BGs are absolutely amazing as well, the only exception being the ocean BG which came off as rather bland. Some CGs dip in quality in comparison to the regular sprites but even then you're too enamored with the happenings included in it to put up any fuss.
Story
You take on the perspective of Skye, the only male student among five. Currently dorming at what seems like paradise, it's a dream come true. This all seems rather cliche and to an extent, I'm sure some people will say the VN as a whole is cliche. Let's use proper wording as it's very important. The premise is cliche; the execution isn't. Even though the MC isn't a self-insert, the things he does aren't idiotic. He's an actual character whose personality traits are consistent and remains competent. The rest of the cast is equally likable. There isn't one that stands out as unlikable by any means. They all get a proper amount of screen time with perhaps an exception to Sara. Nevertheless, this isn't too detrimental as the dialogue she does get helps us to relate with her enough to understand the general archetype; a somewhat socially awkward gamer. Leslie represents the air-headed but compassionate character. Still, she transcends the trope by acting indifferent to even the most unique of circumstances. Andrea represents the athletic girl with a more forward attitude. She's also a bit tsun in that regards but the problem she faces later on is what really makes the character so interesting; spoilers though. Belle is the cool-headed girl with more of an interest in music than anything sports related. Although, the nuances of her problem later is also integral in her characterization; so spoilers again. Trying to derive non-spoiler information about the story of a short game is hard so as a net, it's best to say that the dialogue really makes the game. Combine this with the realistic attitude everyone has about their daily routine and you have a very immersive experience. Nothing ever seems out of character and they really remind you of what a typical college student would do despite the shift of typical location.
Music
Not much to say in regards to music or SFX. Everything fits and nothing is out of place but none of the songs really deserve to be played standalone. The only exception is With Stars in Our Eyes, an emotional piano piece.
Final Thoughts
Buy this game. Honestly, the story is pretty short, but the quality of everything is off the scale. Once this game gets a proper sequel, I have no doubt that this will receive a Senpai Certified seal along with it. Everything has been put into place and such work from a first publication deserves copious amounts of praise.
This is a short kinetic novel that is a prelude or demo for the full American University Life VN, which will come out... someday. Note: the reason it was released is because making a VN is not an inexpensive process. You play as Skye, who has decided to attend the University of Leuther Island, which is the new university in the new state of Leuther Island... which itself was uninhabited a few years prior. Not sure how it became a state so quickly, so either the people that moved there had enough clout, or... they found gold (or something similar) on the island. Oh, and you quickly discover that by "new", the university means... you are one of the first five students. The other four being women... who live in the same house as you. And at least two of them... well... have less than standard care about walking around naked or near naked... No "action" happens in this first week, but it does seem to set-up potential... Worth a read. However, since it is rather short and serves as an intro really... might want to get it on discount.
https://youtu.be/Z3sxMVddCDI Set in a technological wonderland of the 51st state of America, the characters quickly fall into shallow tropes that are just shells for the main character to lust after.
I really loved this VN as it is a nice slice of life, funny and serious in places I do understand and it does feel like it is meant to be a first in a series (which might not happen) i do think it is worth checking out as it is very enjoyable in its own right The game itself has no choices but like other series which is more story than game like Nekopara is still a very good story , which while it has nothing new to offer (in terms of story) it has very nice art and likeable characters and if they ever do have another in the series - it will be a must have for me and well worth the price
