"ALPEN GHOUL: Prologue" is not a game. It's an advertisement for a product called "Alpen Ghoul". Alpen Ghoul is unreleased and may never be (this advert for the product came out a year and a half ago, and the luke warm reception hasn't given the developers much incentive to bother finishing it). It's supposed to be some kind of die-and-retry horror jumpscare game, but it looks a lot more like yet another asset flip to me. But this isn't completely relevant because this is not Alpen Ghoul, it's just an advertisment for it, so it's not correct to try to review that completely distinct product. We must instead review this for what it is... an advertisement. If you enjoy advertisements, you can consume them for free on the web or on Youtube without needing to add them to your game library, download them, and then launch the advertising. It's impossible in a general sense to recommend people should do that over playing real, full games on Steam, and that applies here with "ALPEN GHOUL: Prologue" too. This is only free in the same way that adverts on Youtube and banner ads in your browser are. This is a game demo that's been dumped on Steam to advertise another Steam store page in the hopes of raking in some cash. Just because advertisements are free, doesn't mean they're worth your time. It's important to understand there's a formal process to create a demo/page for a game which hasn't been followed here: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/store/application/demos While it might seem like an inocuous mistake, publishing demos and advertisements as if they are full games is misleading and in some ways harmful. This advertisement is taking up marketing space and visibility that would be better made available to a developer that's done the right thing and created a full game. Instead, that visibility is given over to a demo/advert that's been published incorrectly and is polluting the marketplace. It's unclear if this mistake was made through incompetence or a deliberate intent to mislead gamers. Often developers may choose to incorrectly publish demo/advertisements as separate games as a cheap way to bypass paying Valve for marketing presence on the Steam front page, which may seem clever to them, but it's harmful behaviour and it's not good for gamers. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at just a dozen or so concurrent players, and now there's basically nobody playing it. Even though it's free. This is a dismal public reception, but it's easy to see why gamers rejected it. Advertisements and incorrectly published demos don't add +1 to your game collector count, they aren't full games. It's impossible for me to recommend this incorrectly published advertising spam to gamers, you deserve better than adverts.

It's a fun short horror indie game from an indie company that really listens and utilizes the information they get from the players. I only started in the 1.2 version but from what I heard the previous versions were hell to beat, coming from that they really made very significant fixes that really improved the overall experience. It's definitely a very addicting game and fun to speedrun. Cannot wait to see what other updates they have in the future.
A relaxing and fun stroll across a snowy mountain! Except it's not. An Alpen Ghoul lurks, smells fear, hears footsteps, and bites heads clean off poor lonely ski tourists (that's you). It's a thrilling game to play at midnight and there are actually a good amount of secrets hidden within the environment. Alpen Ghoul also has an excellent use of elevation which isn't utilized as much in games as it should.
I always loved the concept of having a big scary dude chase you throughout a game. The yeti is more dynamic than scripted, and fun movement options make it more of a fun sandbox than a linear set-piece. Very cool. A surprising amount of secrets to find too.
I played this game off of itch.io but had to come leave a review because it was AWESOME! It definitely is a very different type of horror game, and I think that's what grabbed me from the jump. Just the thought of trying to learn to slide away from a giant monster chasing you in the snow was already a VERY different idea than most horror games that have been coming out. The mechanics of the game are easy to understand. You need to run, hide, or slide all while the monster hunts you. It took me a while to learn that no matter what, running or walking, the ghoul will always follow into the area you have gone too. It isn't an easy game where you just can leave the ghoul far behind and easily make it up the mountain. Although, I did figure out tricks to where the ghoul can be left behind while you make a mad dash for one of the routes, but it still needs you to make it to a fairly high point of the map. This being a free prologue already had me excited to play this, but then diving into the gameplay more and learning there are multiple tapes to collect and secrets to be found, made me even more excited to play. This is a great start to whatever full release or 2nd part of this game they are planning to make, and I am completely excited to see after playing such a GREAT start to a series :)
