Narrow Woods Hotel is a horror point and click adventure game developed by Hyper Freeze Games, an indie developer located in Germany who is actually the brother of a Youtube guy quite literally named “Freeze Engine”. Other than that, I’m unsure about the guy’s history other than the fact he’s uploaded numerous Gamemaker Devlog’s to pretty solid viewcount before. Truth be told, I'm really unsure how I was able to find this game either, as it mysteriously popped up in my feed for free just like the hotel apparently. It could’ve been Steam Recs, Twitter, Bloody Disgusting or whatever else but what I’ll say is that like previously I’ve been streaming free and/or cheap horror games on Steam for buddies on Spooky Month. Per tradition, I write up small reviews on the games I’ve played and see how I mesh with them; for the person on Saturday I’ve recently streamed this, DON’T FACE UP and half of The Shore (latter half to be finished next saturday). How does this game stack up against the rest? For plot: https://backloggd.com/u/gamemast15r/review/3511280/ The gameplay is very standard for a lot of the old point and click games: you move around in the game by pressing on the arrows located on the screen and use TAB to open up your inventory and click around in it to use it on a specific item. One thing I’ll say is that it’s a very simple game in this manner, there aren't really any “crazy” puzzles to speak of other than “this door key goes here” and while that’s a shame, it helps the game in a sense in the fact it focuses on its horror atmosphere. I felt that the game was easy to tag along with in terms of what to do and where to go, but if you’re having trouble there’s a guide in the links. I feel like a lot of the “meat” in the gameplay however comes from it’s scares: one such scare has
you having to bolt towards a specific room once you get down to a floor and let me tell you, when I first did it? It caught me off guard. Frantically clicking through numerous slides to outrun a ghost wasn’t something I was expecting for a point and click horror game and surprisingly it worked out well, even when I died because the checkpoints are VERY generous in this game.
The next sections involve
shooting, which I’ll say is where the difficulty can rise but not in a bad way. You’ll have encounters with ghosts here and there, in which case you need to shoot them in the head with a Mauser Pistol. Pressing Q will allow you to switch between the gun and the flashlight, but I’ll say that it’s essential for the “Best” ending that you hit as many of your shots as you possibly can period, even if you get more bullets because it all matters. If you lose any bullets or miss, die to the ghost and restart. This can be a bit much and a tad annoying, but not enough for me to really care to be honest because again the checkpoints are generous. The controls in these sections feel rightfully shaky a bit, but not surprising considering the character probably doesn’t shoot guns and they also have ghosts trying to 187 his ass. I feel like the most the game gets with this is in the basement, where you have to shoot the ghost in total darkness, switching between flashlight and pistol and aiming in total darkness. If you want some tips here, I would say the ghost goes middle left, full right and then middle left once again though if it’s random feel free to headshot, look then perhaps die in case so you learn from memory.
Overall I don’t really have much else that’s bad or anything bad really in relation to the game as I had an engaging time throughout and thought it to be pretty tense. A fun fact about the art design, all of the graphics in the game are pictures based on a hotel that both Hyper Freeze and the developer took on a trip to Toronto in 2023 mixed in with a lot of pixelation over top. I love the look as it feels utterly unique even though it’s a simple method, creepy in nature and never lets up on what I could only describe as “Gameboy Graphics”. The only other graphical things I can point out is that the
ghosts look like Harry Potter-Dementors
(which is cool!) and that the air vent at the end is all 3D which piques my interest for how the sequel will evolve. The sound design too is excellent, with the voice acting sounding surprisingly natural and the noises of opening and closing doors feeling one on one. The one thing I’ll give the most kudos to here is the fact that the soundtrack feels spooky….pixelated, haunting, dark. All fit pretty well and while there are only really a couple of tracks, it reminds me of surprisingly classic old school horror point and click games. You know the kind that were created by European developers who have really goofy early 2000s CGI? That kind and I feel like it adds to the classic feeling atmosphere of the game a lot. In fact I’ll be straight up: I came out of Narrow Woods Hotel genuinely loving the hell out of it, as it was both atmospherically dark and honestly reminded me of an older Grimbeard episode from 2015 or something among those lines. There’s something about that old-style atmosphere, the grimy aesthetics and the haunting music loop that brought me in, but the actual gameplay and story felt interesting and satisfying enough to leave me wanting more. If you’re looking for a free horror game to play during the spooky Halloween season then Narrow Woods Hotel is definitely something that you should pick up and maybe give a shot! On top of that, Hyper Freeze Games is developing a sequel titled “Narrow Woods Breach”, though whether that continues from any of the endings from the previous game I’m unsure. It does look like it fully embraces the 3D Gamemaker graphics that you witnessed in the vent though so I’m definitely looking forward to what’s to come from the developer! ABSOLUTELY FIRE. rly short but rly charming, but i might be biased because first-person point and click horror is my favorite genre so any game like this immediately gets bonus points for me lol. its not the most groundbreaking experience ever but its fun, and somewhat reminds me of doom in some parts, i fw HARD
also, the twist at the "good" ending really caught me by surprise, though honestly it makes sense....so bonus points to the dev for that
Nice little horror point&click Slightly confusing in a good way
Mostly an unpleasant experience. Even as a first project, it’s too barebones to deserve much credit. Positives: -Consistent aesthetics. -Simple to pick up in terms of controls. Negatives: -Too shallow. There are no real puzzles - you just check your inventory and read notes. Most of your time is spent wandering repetitive hallways, clicking on doors and objects, usually to find nothing, yet the game requires you to do this in case something eventually triggers. To make matters worse, the hallways initially look too blurry and alike, making navigation more confusing than it should be. -Offers poor direction: for example, when you get the pistol, it feels reasonable to assume you should conserve ammo given its scarcity and the presence of enemies - yet you’re expected to shoot padlocks without any clear implication of that. -The “screaming figure” loses all tension after the first encounter since it’s easily dealt with, no other enemy types appear, and it quickly becomes more of an annoyance than anything else. Overall: A short, tedious, shallow game that feels like it was abandoned before being finished.
I am giving it 15/10 to cancel out that other guy who THOUGHT he could give it 5/10. Think again, buddy: your review is now NULL and VOID. The game is simply outstanding. No👏 damn👏 notes👏! Tension-laden and uncomplicated narrative, cohesive and intuitive gameplay, and convincingly rusty faux-retro aesthetic: it all makes for a flawless horror micro-experience. It's no wonder it's getting 10/10 reviews across the board.
a very unique and interesting horror game i havent seen much like. i like the gameplay and puzzle aspect, but the ending left me a little confused. still some good fun tho
Incredible
The developer went to a hotel, took pictures, and turned that into a narrative and survival horror experience. This is the true definition of working smarter and not harder. What a lovely little FREE experience. Truly amazing when something like this turns up in your game queue.
