"Alibi: The Dinner Party" is surprisingly good, considering it is Monabi Games' first effort. The soundtrack's jazzy mix complemented the unfolding plot; started laid-back and became increasingly more frantic as the progression reached a crescendo. Speaking of, the story's pacing was impeccable, holding my attention throughout the game. The suspense and intrigue, passed the opening, was so compelling that I completed it in one sitting, as I had to know the conclusion. The game's true strength lay in its logical design. It refrained from convoluted puzzles or game mechanics (looking at you, Danganronpa), allowing the focus to remain on solving the mystery at hand. This approach made me feel engaged, accomplished and smart as I was able to deduce the correct answer without resorting to absurd reasoning. In essence, "Alibi: The Dinner Party" is a refined visual novel that skillfully combines music, narrative, and logical plotlines. If you're in search of a captivating experience, this game comes highly recommended.
Genre
Eine Murder Mystery Detective Visual Novel
Story
+ Gute Story + Spannend + Gute Musik + Einige Twists +/- Leider keine Achievements
Fazit
It was fun. I really enjoyed the part with the soirée and the other part with the prom. My first 24 minutes in this game were full of joy and wonder, but when it was revealed a body had been discovered at the party, I was filled with such despair! Would recommend.
A short little detective game in a similar style to Phoenix Wright. A nice attempt for a first time game developer
A detective visual novel in which there are no bad choices. There has been a murder, and you have been assigned to conduct the investigation. It happened at one of your friends' house during a party, thus you must keep your personal feelings apart from your professional life. The gameplay is comparable to that of any other visual novel. There is a lot of reading and clicking the mouse button to proceed to the next text. Because you're in the role of a detective, you have a few more options to help you feel like you're actually doing some work. However, the game is still linear and does not allow you any freedom. There is no looking for clues or solving logic puzzles on your own. All you have to do is move around the house and click on potential evidence that the game presents you. You will not miss anything because all important information is immediately recorded in your casefile. Once you’re done with the house, you move to interrogation. It's simple; you listen to the suspect, occasionally put pressure on them by clicking on highlighted words, provide evidence to make them crack, and point to important rooms in the house. And once again, you can't make a mistake. Even if you choose the incorrect option, the characters will just remark that it is wrong and you will be able to choose again until you click on the one that is right.
Pretty interesting mystery but you can tell the person who wrote this couldn't solve Umineko No Naku Koro Ni.
It was fun. The characters generally had strong identities, though that strength did seem a little wasted as the game focuses entirely on the A plot with not much else going on. It might have been nice to see more interactions with Jasmine as well, perhaps with certain revelations being ordained through past experiences involving her and told in retrospect. Additionally, while the investigation steps are generally varied in how they feel, the game has runs of the same kind of stuff in a row, which may have been benefited by better interspersing evidence gathering and suspect interviews sections. Overall good mystery and worth playing.
tl;dr it's okay, worth spending an evening on gah writing reviews without spoiling story games is a pain i almost want to write a review as a message to the developer rather than for those who're looking to suss out whether they should buy and play this it's not glaringly bad at anything, and there's noticeable awkwardness here and there, but the game and the story is not in any way ruined by that, so there it's a competent detective story, it's interesting enough, it's a pretty good purchase p.s. regards to the developer, i do hope to see more if that's on the cards
