Lots of fun...level based, but all levels are large, connected and requires alot of backtracking and exploring, which is a plus. Plenty of collectables...quite enjoyable. My only comlaint is the window sizing and resolution, unless I'm doing something wrong on my end. This platformer is certainly worth the price, and I do recommend it...enjoy
THE APE IS BACK! In his first action game ever...DONKEY KONG COUNTRY! What makes this game so remarkable is that its the first game created with fully rendered graphics! What the heck is fully rendered? To put it in a nutshell: fully rendered means that the characters and all other graphics were created by computer modeling from all sides and angles of the objects. Thus animation is totally complete and uninhibited using any view of the object. The technology is not incredibly different than that which was used to create the dinosaurs of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park or the wonders of The Mask! One of the best examples of the 3D rendering in this game is the water level. The shark also known as "Chomps Jr." IS AN INCREDIBLE SIGHT! The animation of everything in the game as well as all the backgrounds were created with rendering techniques on the silicon graphics computer! This amazing new technology discovered at RARE by Nintendo's Tony Harmon will be the next standard in video game animation and graphics! This technology marks a new era! The programmers of Donkey Kong Country were able to stretch their creative minds since Donkey Kong doesn't have a particularly detailed history. The main idea of the story is that you're trying to get back the bananas that were stolen from your stockpile. Kong, Diddy are the main monkey characters, but throughout the travels on the island of Donkey Kong Country you'll encounter several characters that are extremely diverse in personality. From an ostrich named Espresso to a Rhino named Ramby, the game is endless thrills and is certainly destined for greatness. Cranky Kong, the star of the original game and also DK's grandfather will give you advice throughout the game...he Thinks you need it. Hundreds of bonus levels result in a game that will never be boring. The music also adds a lot to the game...PLAY IT LOUD IN STEREO DUDEEEEE! You can buy the music on CD from Nintendo if your Nintendo isn't hooked up to a stereo system. Cranky Kong remembers music in the old days, but Donkey Kong is truly with the times so to speak. His music is great for listening, just pause the game to hear the music without the game's sound effects! Speaking of sound effects you'll notice the quality of the echoes in the caves and Donkey Kong's ape noises! Donkey Kong Country is truly perfect! If you do not get this amazing new generation of Donkey Kong Madness YOU ARE STUPID! Yes! I know! That's insulting, but it's also the truth! If you're a true videogame fan you will not hesitate in the slightest bit to buy this remarkable piece of videogame history! Bottom line...GET IT NOW! The graphics are an example of a revolution. Play control is very responsive and monkey feeling. The challenge is high because you must often pass several hard levels to reach Candy's save point. The two player game option is awesome since you can press A to let a other player play! What's even cooler is the way the game lets the next player pick up where the last player died without interrupting gameplay. If you want the other player to play, just press A! These features and so much more make Donkey Kong Country the GAME OF THE DECADE!
Just another crappy indie game. This looks and plays like a game for gradeschoolers but at least it has controller support, lots of newer games don't even have that.
https://youtu.be/raZmsddnb4w It's all Monkey Buisness in this retro platformer that apes the metroid-vania style mechanics of exploration and navigation abilities. The silly setup is of little concern if the design and gameplay works well. Unfortunately, the game tends to drop or delay inputs for jumping which makes any tight platforming sections incredibly frustrating due to no fault of the player.
Can you please fix the game. Controller not working (X360), and the game runs like crap, it's super slow laaagish like 10fps. 4 core 8 thread i7965x 3.75 clock 1gen or 2nd gen 12GB ram WIN 10x64 still working :D But here comes a 8mb platformer game that barely uses 10% of the CPU and still runs like crap. Went out of my way to buy this game, now I can't play it :( Seen someone on youtube with similar framerate to mine on one of the gameplay vids, but on the others, it seems to work much faster. To be honest I doubt it's my PC as the DEMO version from GameJolt works flawless. SO PLEASE FIX IT AS I WOULD LIKE TO PLAY IT Will change the review if game is fixed, at the moment I can't recommend it.
This game has potential. There are issues though. Ever since the developer changed something because some people were complaining about pixelation, you can't actually change the resolution of the game now. You can change the size of the window, but the game stays small. The discussion boards have a hack to change to compatibility mode that at least allows the game to be played on a wide screen monitor. However, there are no settings for this game. Though it kind works with a controller, it also doesn't work with a controller. For example, I can't start the game using the controller. I have to use the keyboard. I'm not even sure which button I used, I thought it was "Enter" but I'm not sure. Because when I just died and was presented with the "Continue" or "Quit" Screen, I was unable to interact with that screen. What was the point of saving? There were some basic design issues and weirdness with jumping and how extra lives worked, but honestly, I thought I'd be okay if I was able to play it longer. I was having a fun good run with it, and would have continued, but I was unable to do so because of bad game interface design. Due to that, I can't recommend this game. TLDR; screen is too small without adjusting settings that the game doesn't allow for natively, and problems with the UI. If you fix these issues, please let me know and I'll happily try it again.
Adventure apes works fine as a lite metroidvania but the platforming is arguably a bit awkward. Fortunately the game does not ask for much when it comes to platforming; most of the game is instead spent fighting monsters using the array of weapons found in the game. Recommended to:Metroidvania lovers, those who can handle slightly imprecise controls in their platformers Detailed information below:
Gameplay
Fighting: As mentioned most of the game will be spent fighting monsters. This is done by using different ranged weapons. While these weapons do have their specific uses outside of combat (destroying blocks, activating "buttons" and so forth) they do not change the fighting with the exception of some weapons dealing more damage and one that works as an AOE attack. This is unfortunate since the meat of the game is spent shooting these monsters and having the weapons feel more different would have made for more variation. For example one weapon could've caused a slow effect and another could've had a pushback effect. The bosses are nothing special either. Since the weapons are no different, simply use the weapon that deals the most damage, spam the attack and change weapon when the ammo is out. Platforming: Not much to say here, the controls are a bit imprecise which often leads to overshooting when going to the edge of a platform and subsequently falling off. But since the game does not focus on this, there are maybe three hard jumps in the game total, it was not a problem personally. Unlocks: The weapons are the primary unlocks one will find in Adventure apes but there are some that change the character (swimming, higher jump, pushing blocks) and a bomb powerup. While there is nothing wrong with the functionality of the different weapons I feel that the biggest problem is that they are simply not needed often enough. The feeling of a metroidvania is slightly lost in my opinion when the upgrades are used so sparingly. Most of the time the upgrades are only used in the level they were found, such as the swimming ability, and are not needed in the other levels with maybe one or two exceptions.
Conclusions
Ultimately I had fun playing Adventure Apes which is why I recommend it. Even though the actual metroidvania feel is slightly diminished it is still quite palpable. The "Oh I know where I can use this new upgrade/powerup" moments are there which I personally play metroidvanias for. But if you are searching for a platformer with metroidvania elements this is not the game for you and you will only be disappointed. ( Note1: I did not beat the last boss) ( Note2: Maps for the levels can be found in the manual. This helps if you are stuck but since the upgrade locations are shown on the map the sense of accomplishment for finding something yourself is lost. Maps without the upgrade locations would be the best solution to this problem.)
