Advent Rising

Всем, кто хочет почувствовать себя избранным, даже если этот избранный периодически застревает в текстурах. it's Mass Effect before Mass Effect pretty much.
"I'll follow you to greater lights"
I played this game a ton when I was a kid. It was clunky and lacked polish. Obviously it was rushed and was missing bits here and there. But something just clicked with me - the setting was interesting, storytelling and dialogues were great, soundtrack was PERFECT. I especially liked the skill progression system - you level up the skills by actually using them. And yes, this means you can jump in one place a thousand times and level up your jumping. I ended up beating the game maybe 10 times, on the highest difficulty, I memorized everything about it. Was really devastated it never got a sequel. The game used to end with a "to be continued" screen which I think was removed in later versions. If you want to have a blast from the past, definitely pick it up for 2,49 when it's on sale. Even if you don't like it, you won't miss the money. But you might end up enjoying a good story.
I am so sad I slept on this game as long as I had. I get the impression that many people played the game for a few minutes, or so negativity concerning the awkwardly-navigated release of the game in its original incarnation, and never gave it a second thought. But I assure you, Advent Rising is a game that gets better the longer you play into it. You begin as Gideon Wyath, Captain BoringPants the ordinary guy, being forced into situations due to always, always, always being in the wrong places at the wrong times. From bar brawls to an alien invasion that forces you the sadistic choice of rescuing either your fiance or your brother, the game is slathered in a kind of melodrama I can't help but love. The moment to moment gameplay is run-n-gun with some dodging and jumping involved, but to limit it to that classification is to render unto it a severe disservice - you will begin to accumulate magic powers which change the genre from run-n-gun to run-n-god, as you fire ki blasts, hurl enemies across the map with a flick of the wrist, and deflect surface-to-air missiles like something out of a Matrix sequel. It is the kind of cheesy and glorious sci-fi story one would've seen in the silver age of pulp comic books. Now, the game is a little rough at points, and there are some bugs and glitches. However, community guides have helped iron out the better part of these and, sadly, there will be no resolution to the story as of yet. However, what is here is great, especially because it's never been cheaper. You owe it to yourself if any of what I've said sounds even remotely fun and engaging. I assure you it's worth it.
Where do I even start with a game like Advent Rising? For those who don't know, this game was meant to be the "Halo Killer." It obviously got nowhere close to even touching Halo and Instead it had a horrible development cycle, with it being rushed to meet a deadline. It got mediocre to bad reviews and it completely flopped. This game should in theory, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ suck. But for some reason I kind of like it. Yes the combat sucks. Yes the writing is... Questionable?. Yes the graphics, even for the time suck. But I don't know I can't explain it, I just kind of like this game. I think It's a fun game that has some cool ideas. I thought the story was interesting and it kept me hooked. The combat while clunky, can be pretty fun once you get the demigod powers. Fun is really just the word that sums this game up. I would probably gives this game a 3.5/5 If it hadn't become so boring near the end. Overall: Just fun. Can also be interesting at times, but It's mostly just a tedious and forgettable experience.
This one is a bit confusing when it comes to a recommendation. On one hand it is interesting enough if you can get it on a dirt cheap sale but I wouldn't go out of my way to play it again and think it has quite a few shortcomings. The actual game is a blatant ripoff of Halo with some Mass Effect (yes I realized this came out after) / KOTOR mixed in. The way the story sections are presented is very similar to these games and the combat really feels like some alpha version of Halo 1 even down to how the enemies look and their death physics. Without spoiling, the story itself has VERY familiar ideas from the previously mentioned games but a combined soup of them. It has decent moments but some oddly paced gameplay sections can slog a bit and while it gets more interesting near the end its clear this was supposed to be multiple games and therefor ends unresolved. The actual gameplay is very linear corridors with waves of enemies in combat arenas with a few bosses sprinkled in. The bosses aren't difficult but the actual mechanics of doing them can be pretty jank and unclear. It's a very short game so even though I found the combat to be fine enough it was starting to get a bit boring due to the amount, lack of enemy diversity, and environmental diversity. Game ran fine with only a couple of crashes that seemed to stem from using the steam overlay. FYI to get the game to run in your preferred resolution change it in the MyDefault.ini not the default.ini. I went with a high res 4:3 ratio and stretched to fit my monitor as I found that made the character models appear less tall/skinny. I actually think despite its similarities that is has some potential. I would love to see a remake that fleshes out the story more, modernizes the combat, and diversifies the levels. So in conclusion while there are interesting moments here, the overall package is underwhelming and just watching a cutscene compilation on Youtube would probably suffice.
Advent Rising is one of those games whose legacy is defined as much by what it attempted as by what it actually achieved. Developed by GlyphX Games with Cavetap and brought to Steam by Ziggurat, it arrived with the creative weight of a planned trilogy, a Hollywood-styled marketing push, and narrative involvement from Orson Scott Card—a combination that promised a sweeping science-fiction epic. The story follows Gideon Wyeth, a seemingly ordinary pilot who becomes entangled in a universe-shifting revelation: humanity is not insignificant, but a species of mythical importance, feared and targeted by a powerful alien race known as the Seekers. That premise—humans as dormant gods—gives the game a sense of urgency and magnitude that few action games of its era embraced, and even now, it remains an enticing sci-fi hook. The narrative unfolds cinematically, emphasizing emotional stakes over simple mission progression. Cutscenes frame Gideon’s transformation from vulnerable survivor to evolving superhuman, and the supporting cast reinforces the personal cost of survival—family loss, betrayal, and moral uncertainty all shape the journey. Advent Rising doesn’t just present a conflict between species; it explores themes of prophecy, destiny, responsibility, and the frightening consequences of absolute power. While its dialogue and character development occasionally show their age, the ambition behind the storytelling is evident, and the orchestral score—one of the game’s most enduring strengths—elevates the drama into something operatic. Even players who struggle with the gameplay often remember the music and worldbuilding long after the credits roll. Mechanically, Advent Rising blends third-person shooting with an escalating suite of psychic abilities. At first, combat resembles a conventional sci-fi shooter—guns, grenades, ducking behind cover—but as Gideon unlocks telekinetic blasts, levitation, energy shields, and reality-bending attacks, the encounters shift into power-fantasy territory. The intention is clear: the player should feel evolution, not just progression. In concept, this creates a satisfying arc, and when it works, combat can feel dynamic and cathartic, letting players juggle enemies, redirect projectiles, and tear through armored forces with supernatural force. Unfortunately, the game’s signature flick-targeting system—a control method designed to lock onto enemies by quickly aiming toward them—never fully achieves the intuitive precision it strives for. Combined with unpredictable camera movement and occasional hit detection issues, the fluid combat the designers envisioned often becomes clumsy or inconsistent. Those control frustrations are compounded by Advent Rising’s technical limitations. Even on modern hardware, the game shows its age through uneven performance, scripting hiccups, AI quirks, abrupt difficulty spikes, and animation stiffness. The environments, though grand in thematic scale—alien temples, devastated cities, starship interiors—can feel visually sparse compared to the imagination driving them. These flaws don’t destroy the experience, but they reveal the gap between the developers’ aspirations and the resources available to fully realize them. The planned trilogy never materialized, and the abrupt ending, clearly meant as a narrative springboard, still feels like an unresolved promise. Yet despite its shortcomings, Advent Rising has accumulated a loyal following rather than fading into obscurity. Part of that affection comes from its willingness to dream big: few mid-2000s action games attempted such operatic sci-fi storytelling, such rapid power progression, or such a mythic interpretation of humanity’s place in the universe. It feels like a game designed by people who believed passionately in their story and characters, even if their technical execution couldn’t quite keep pace. For modern players discovering it on Steam, it functions almost like a time capsule—flawed, earnest, ambitious, occasionally frustrating, but undeniably memorable. Ultimately, Advent Rising succeeds more as an experience than as a finely tuned action game. It offers a compelling world, dramatic reveals, strong musical direction, and one of the more arresting sci-fi premises ever attempted in the genre. Its mechanics can be messy, and its production constraints are impossible to overlook, but its heart—and its scale—remain admirable. For those who value atmosphere, narrative ambition, and imaginative science fiction over mechanical refinement, Advent Rising remains worth exploring, both as a story and as a fascinating artifact of what could have become a much larger universe.
