The keyboard controls are crap and can't be reconfigured. I won't play a fighting game in 2026 that can't properly configure keyboard controls. I've made a return. P.S.: I could install a Sega Saturn emulator right now for FREE and use it to customize the key controls exactly how I want. But these people are asking for money and can't even do that.
Im just disappointed with myself for having never heard of this game. This game just has great 90s vibes and brings me back to my childhood. The gameplay is amazing, especually considering that it can go toe to toe with top notch games from this era like sf alpha and kof 97. Characters are great although it does have a small roster, but for the most part they're all likeable. Music is amazing and stages are great too. I love the restaurant theme and I wish we saw more themed games like that in the fighting scene. If you like fighting games from this era, I strongly recommend! 8/10

ADVANCED V.G. Saturn Tribute, developed and published by CITY CONNECTION, is a revival of a late-1990s fighting game that arrives on modern platforms with minimal alteration to its original design. Rather than attempting to modernize or reinterpret the experience, this release focuses on preservation, offering players a chance to revisit—or discover—a niche title from the Sega Saturn era. As such, it feels less like a contemporary fighting game and more like a snapshot of a very specific moment in gaming history, complete with all the strengths and limitations that come with it. The gameplay follows a straightforward one-on-one fighting format, built around basic attacks, special moves, and simple defensive mechanics. The system is easy to grasp, making it accessible for newcomers, but it quickly reveals its lack of depth. Compared to other fighters from the same era, the mechanics feel somewhat rigid, with limited combo potential and a slower, less fluid pace. Matches tend to revolve around a small set of effective strategies, and once these are understood, the gameplay can begin to feel repetitive. While there is a certain charm in its simplicity, it does not offer the complexity or balance needed to sustain long-term engagement. A significant part of the game’s appeal lies in its presentation. The character roster is composed of stylized, anime-inspired fighters, each with distinct visual designs that reflect the aesthetic trends of the late 90s. The pixel art is vibrant and expressive, capturing a level of detail that remains visually appealing even today. This artistic style gives the game a strong identity, and in many ways, it is the most memorable aspect of the experience. The animations, while not as fluid as modern titles, still convey personality and help bring the characters to life. The game includes several modes, such as an arcade-style progression, a story mode with visual novel elements, and local versus play. The story mode attempts to expand on the characters and their motivations, but its impact is limited by accessibility issues. Much of the dialogue and voice acting remains untranslated, which can make it difficult for players unfamiliar with Japanese to fully engage with the narrative. This is a notable drawback, especially given that the story is intended to be a key part of the experience. To make the game more approachable for modern audiences, the “Saturn Tribute” version introduces a handful of quality-of-life features. These include save states, rewind functionality, and simplified input options that allow players to execute special moves more easily. These additions help reduce frustration and make the game more accessible, particularly for those who may not be accustomed to older fighting game mechanics. However, they do not fundamentally change the experience, and the core gameplay remains rooted in its original design. Where the game struggles most is in how its mechanics hold up over time. The lack of depth and variety in combat can make extended play sessions feel monotonous, and the AI does not provide a consistently challenging or engaging opponent. While the game may have been more competitive or novel at the time of its release, it now feels dated when compared to both modern fighters and even some of its contemporaries from the same era. Despite these shortcomings, ADVANCED V.G. Saturn Tribute has value as a preservation effort. It provides access to a game that was previously difficult to experience outside its original platform and region, offering insight into a lesser-known corner of fighting game history. For enthusiasts of retro titles or those interested in exploring the evolution of the genre, it serves as an interesting artifact that highlights both the creativity and limitations of its time. Ultimately, this is a game that will resonate most with a specific audience. Players who appreciate retro aesthetics, historical context, and niche titles may find enjoyment in its presentation and simplicity. However, those looking for a deep, competitive, or modern fighting experience are likely to find it lacking. It succeeds in preserving its source material, but it does little to adapt it for contemporary expectations. Rating: 6/10
The game runs very well on the Steamdeck. Love the 90s graphics and artwork of this game. Fun game to play and has an option for 1 save state. Audio can be a little bit lofi, but it kinda adds to the retroness.
The game was fun, just had 2 problems: I couldn't understand the dialogue of the cutscene, and there's no option to lower the audio in the game. -------------------------I Gameplay: 7/10 Music: 8/10 Game: 8/10
