really good game. it has a deep story and feelings. you have to focus on the chats and notes to understand. there are some times i did not know where to go so i went to youtube several times. there are some catastrophic violent scenes so you have to be brave. enjoy the game! 7/10 semi-spoiler if you want the happy ending make all lights green, and vice versa
You play this one for the story above all else, and that won't be everyone's cup of tea. If you're expecting a fast-paced WW1 shooter, you're better off in a BF1 lobby, or maybe NecroVisioN for a more action-oriented horror experience. While Ad Infinitum has tense moments that require quick thinking/reflexes, it rewards the patient gamer more than anything. Exploring the environments, reading documents (some of these are optional, but they all add to the narrative and worldbuilding), and absorbing the atmosphere are where the game truly shines. The grotesque yet beautiful visuals, memorable soundtrack, and attention to period-accurate detail make it clear that this was a passion project. The gameplay itself is fairly straightforward, revolving around puzzles, stealth, quick-time events, and survival. It doesn't reinvent the genre, but it doesn't need to. The real strength lies in its narrative, one of the most hauntingly beautiful I've experienced in a while. Beneath the monsters and supernatural (or maybe hallucinatory?) imagery lies a story about guilt, trauma, PTSD, family, blind patriotism, dishonesty and the psychological scars left by war. The true horror isn't the creatures you encounter, but ordinary human cruelty and the damage it leaves behind. Despite its darkness, the game never completely abandons hope, challenging both your morality and the choices you make throughout the journey. With three distinct endings, the game offers meaningful replay value, each path leading to the same final message through different choices. Its ending is especially poignant if you can empathize with those who lived through the turmoil of the first World War. It left me reflecting on how easily we take the people and moments in our lives for granted, and on the complexities of human nature itself. A gripping experience that will stay with me for a while. The Great War killed 20 million people, a lot of which would not be old enough to play an M-rated game today, but old enough to pick up a rifle in 1914. May they rest in peace.
Incredible story
Ad Infinitum creates an oppressive atmosphere where the visceral horrors of World War I trenches collide with the metaphorical rot of a fractured family estate. Distorted audio from wax cylinders and the heavy, rhythmic thud of boots anchor the psychological tension throughout this haunting exploration of a soldier's internalised warfare. Oscillating between these two distinct locations fosters a layered mystery that reveals the tragic history of the von Schmidt lineage through fragmented documents. Instead of relying on heavy exposition, the narrative relies on environmental clues that encourage players to piece together the truth behind persistent generational trauma. Stealth sequences demand careful sound management while avoiding threats rather than engaging in direct combat or frequent monster encounters. Navigating these claustrophobic environments requires balancing inventory items like acids or keys, though specific sequences occasionally suffer from unpolished flashlight mechanics that impede progress during intense, high-pressure moments. Forced pacing sequences occasionally disrupt the flow, while the camera system can feel strangely disconnected from the protagonist's physical presence during complex traversal. Early hours often feel needlessly frustrating due to obscured gamma settings and unclear interaction requirements, which frequently hide vital gameplay elements within the encroaching, heavy darkness. Small collectibles like dog tags become needlessly difficult to manage when lighting conditions obscure essential objects within the gloom of the decaying manor. These minor interface hurdles can detract from the immersion, particularly when interacting with essential items that remain hidden from view despite their proximity to the character. Adapting to the game's deliberate design intent eventually shifts early irritation into a genuine appreciation for the psychological depth on display. Mastery of the controls allows the oppressive tone to resonate fully, successfully moving beyond the standard tropes of hallway-based frights to deliver a more significant, lasting impact. Overall, the atmospheric soundscapes and environmental storytelling establish a powerful, immersive experience that outweighs the finicky interactions or occasionally uneven lighting issues. Navigating this juxtaposition of domestic and battlefield suffering provides a deeply rewarding narrative journey, making it a compelling choice for those prioritising world-building and psychological mystery.
The story is absolutely fantastic. Paired with the tragic setting, and unsettling monster designs, it makes for a great horror experience.
