A competitive bullet hell fighting game? It's brilliant
i love this game but i am not recommending this, i want to gatekeep it...
I remember playing this game on PS3 when I was 10, and I only had recently come back to it. It's still as fun as I remembered it being, the combat is chaotic and it's great. The soundtrack too is also a banger. If you guys love danmaku games like touhou, then you'll most likely love this game as well.
Acceleration of SUGURI X-Edition HD is a high-speed competitive action game that successfully merges the intensity of bullet hell shooters with the tactical depth of arena fighting. Developed by Orange_Juice and published by Rockin' Android, this enhanced edition modernizes the original release with optional high-definition visuals while preserving the fast, skill-driven gameplay that helped the series earn a dedicated following. Rather than following the conventions of either genre, the game creates its own identity by emphasizing aerial movement, projectile evasion, and strategic positioning in every battle. The result is a distinctive experience that feels refreshing even among other independent action titles. Combat is the heart of the experience, delivering fast-paced duels that demand constant attention and quick decision-making. Players dash around open arenas while firing an assortment of ranged weapons, charging powerful attacks, and avoiding elaborate patterns of enemy projectiles. Success depends on far more than simple reflexes, as managing distance, reading an opponent's intentions, and using energy resources efficiently become just as important as aiming accurately. Every encounter encourages aggressive play while rewarding patience and precision, creating battles that remain exciting from start to finish. The roster offers an enjoyable level of variety, with each playable character featuring unique weapons, movement styles, and combat techniques. No two fighters feel identical, making experimentation one of the game's greatest strengths. Learning the strengths and weaknesses of each character significantly changes how battles unfold, encouraging players to adapt their tactics depending on their chosen fighter or opponent. Unlockable characters and multiple story paths further expand replay value, giving players plenty of reasons to continue mastering the game's mechanics beyond their initial playthrough. Although the narrative is relatively straightforward, it effectively supports the gameplay without becoming intrusive. Set after the events of the original SUGURI, the story reunites familiar characters in another series of high-speed confrontations where rivalries, alliances, and personal motivations drive the action forward. Dialogue remains lighthearted while maintaining the energetic tone of the series, providing enough personality to make the cast memorable without slowing the overall pace. Fans of the franchise will appreciate the returning characters, while newcomers can still enjoy the game even if some of the broader lore remains unexplained. The HD upgrade is one of the edition's most noticeable improvements. Character artwork, visual effects, and interface elements have been refreshed with sharper presentation while retaining the anime-inspired style of the original release. Bright energy blasts, colorful explosions, and fluid animation make every battle visually engaging, yet the game generally maintains enough clarity for players to track incoming attacks despite the chaotic action. The inclusion of both classic and updated visual options also respects longtime fans who prefer the original appearance. The soundtrack complements the frantic gameplay with energetic electronic music that keeps the momentum high throughout every match. Combined with responsive sound effects, each successful hit, evasive maneuver, and devastating special attack feels impactful. While the audio primarily serves to reinforce the pace rather than tell the story, it succeeds in creating an exciting arcade atmosphere that perfectly matches the game's nonstop action. Beyond the campaign, the game includes multiple story scenarios, local multiplayer, online battles, achievements, and collectible Steam features that help extend its longevity. Multiplayer is particularly rewarding because every match emphasizes player skill rather than luck, allowing experienced competitors to develop increasingly advanced strategies over time. Even after completing the story, improving personal performance and learning new characters provide lasting motivation to keep returning. Its greatest weakness is its accessibility. The game expects players to understand its unusual blend of mechanics with relatively little guidance, which can make the first several hours feel overwhelming. The speed of combat leaves little room for hesitation, and newcomers may initially struggle to understand movement, weapon timing, and defensive techniques. However, those willing to invest time into learning the system are rewarded with one of the most mechanically satisfying independent action games in its genre. Acceleration of SUGURI X-Edition HD stands out because it confidently combines ideas from multiple genres into a cohesive and highly rewarding experience. Its demanding gameplay, diverse cast, polished HD presentation, and competitive depth create a game that continues to feel unique years after its release. While its steep learning curve may discourage casual players, action fans looking for a challenging and original combat system will discover a title that offers exceptional replayability and lasting appeal. Rating: 8/10
