There are two ways to play this game. The normal game mode features dozens of scenarios where you need to manage your train company. It may seem a little overwhelming at first, but the game is quite simple, and once you understand that you need to supply materials and passengers to the regions in order for them to develop, profiting mainly from the subsidiaries you will build/purchase in these more developed regions, the game becomes easy. Still, the planning part in the more difficult scenarios can be quite satisfying and interesting. Oh, and remember to keep an eye on taxes. They will eat into your profits every month, and take a huge chunk out of your earnings every May 1 and June 1. The second game mode is sandbox (through the scenario editor), where you can create things at will. This mode offers you enormous depth to create your railroads and train operations, and management through timetables can be as complex as you want. Whichever mode interests you most, you'll have a very addictive and enormously satisfying game to play, once you get past the initial learning curve and understand how to play and profit. I don't think any other train game explores the same things as A-Train, in its minute-by-minute simulation of entire days, weeks, months, and years. Just keep in mind that logistics here isn't done through signals, like in Western tycoon games, but basically entirely through timetables, with 1-minute precision, which allows you to perform quite complex and realistic train operations, but which require a lot of math and probably some specialized programs or spreadsheets if you really want to dive deep into the timetable micromanagement (the depth is infinite). Summary: A highly addictive game, with minute-by-minute simulation of entire years, and train operation (mainly passenger trains) based on timetables where you can micromanage down to the smallest detail. Once you get past the initial hurdle and understand how the game works, it's hard to stop playing. Note 1: there is a performance issue, sometimes after playing a lot, the frame rate drops to around 10 fps even if you have a good computer, and in these cases you need to restart the game for the frame rate to return to normal. I don't know what causes this, but it happens quite often. Note 2: the various Japanese real trains are exclusive to the Japanese version of the game and will not be available in this version.

This game is incredibly addicting! The learning curve is [u]very steep[/u]. Balance sheets, profit margins, urban planing, subsidiaries, stock market, real estate, taxes. A-Train 9 doesn't explain anything, no tutorial. At the same time, the simulation is so deep and intricate that you can spend hours fine tuning the time table of each railway station you built for the new passenger line, just to increase the efficiency of each train and therefore profitabilty. You will feel lost and frustrated during the first few hours and often, the only way to figure things out is through trial & error and reading guides online. Don't expect to receive instant gratification here, you won't get any. Instead, be prepared to see the game over screen a few times before seeing even the smallest progress. Also expect to go "game over" when the day for the tax payment arrives. :) But once you managed to leave that initial state of confusion & frustration and see your company and your city grow, the feeling of your personal investment (your time and energy) paying off is incredible. A few hours later you will be building sky scrapers, amusement parks and more railway stations and material factories, as well as making profits at the stock market. Your actions will create an environment of growth for the city and seeing it flourish is very satisfying. Also, A-Train 9 is a content-behemoth: I'm at around 80 hours of play time so far and I'm still playing the [b]first scenario[/b] (out of 60)! If you like what you see in the screenshots and if you are willing to invest your time and energy overcoming the very steep learning curve and battling the somewhat confusing menus, you will be rewarded with an extremely deep, satisfying and very unique urban simulation game! The graphics are absolutely servicable with an emphasis on japanese urban architecture. There are so many details everywhere and it's a joy to get into the "cockpit view" of any train, bus or truck and just watch them traverse your city at the lowest level. Also, the game runs nicely overall and didn't crash even once so far. My personal recommendations for getting into this game: - Look up strategy guides and tutorials online [u]before buying[/u] the game and see if you are in the mood to get into those topics presented there. - Going "game over" during your first attempts is part of the process (in my opinion). Accept that and don't let frustration overwhelm you. - When playing a new scenario: In the main menu, click on market --> real estate and scroll through all the different types of real estate your company already owns in that scenario (apartment buildings, office buildings, hotels etc.) and click on "sell" at every entry that has a negative profitability percentage (shown in orange color). - Like another reviewer suggested: get some cash at the stock market (main menu: market --> stock market). Wait until the shares of a company get below $8 and buy some. Do this for all companies listet (if their stock is below $8 in price). Then play the game normally and check the stock market from time to time. At some point, the stocks will be at $20 or more each. That is the time to sell (doesn't matter if it's $18 or whatever). Don't worry, all companies will sooner or later reach that price. It is always going up and down. - Don't overdo it with construction at the beginning. Move in small steps. Build a hotel or an office building and observe if they are getting profitable or not. Try to build in areas that have a high population density (buildings). - The more subsidiaries you own, the higher your tax burden will be. Always make sure to have enough cash for the yearly tax payment. Have fun with this very "japanese" railway / economy / urban planing / logistics simulation game. It's truly one of a kind!

I love playing this game so much! Since the version 4.0. There's no fighting, no violence, no shooting, no killing. You just build strategy, and it's incredibly relaxing, which is why I love playing this game so much. Well with this new version everyting was going very well but after all, I started a game on three standard maps and continued, saving over them as I went. Then I designed my own two games using map editors and started playing and saving over them as well. Progress was going great, until, after opening a standard game, playing, and saving, I noticed that all my other saves were saved over my most recent save with the same name. This is a serious bug, and I hope the game's developers fix it.

This game feels like it was made correctly, within an hour, I had trains running in a semi complicated track setup, no instructions needed. uses actual Japanese (and a lone CSX SD50) trains and engines. feels like a callback to A train 6. can't wait to see the custom loco scene

Beste A-Train Version für Städtebauer die sich im Detail verlieren möchten. Ich habe 1998 meinen ersten A-Train in der Gold Games 2 gehabt (A IV Networks) und schon als kleiner Junge geliebt. Nach und nach habe ich dann auch weitere A-Train Versionen gespielt, unter anderem auch den extra für den westlichen Raum rausgebrachten Bahngigant der grundsätzlich wohl A-Train 9 V2 darstellen soll. Dieser hatte noch weit weniger Gebäude, Züge und Möglichkeiten im Vergleich zur V5. Selbst den Wechsel von der V4 auf die V5 würde ich empfehlen da die V4 mit Performanceproblemen zu kämpfen hat, die die V5 dank 64Bit Unterstützung nun weit besser handhabt. Hinzu kommen wieder mehr Gebäude, super gestaltete neue Maps und ich glaube auch ein paar neue Züge. Jetzt gibt es noch A-Train All About Tourism welches seinen eigenen Charme hat. Vor allem gefällt mir an dem Teil die Einführung für Anfänger sowie die Aufgaben (ähnlich wie Quests), die einem einfach ein Ziel geben. Solche Aufgaben hat man nur zu Kartenbeginn bei A-Train 9 und diese sind auch nur als Tipps zu sehen. Letztendlich ist das Ziel auf jeder Karte das Selbe: Maximale Gewinne und Stadtwachstum. Fazit: A-Train 9 V5 komplettiert die A-Train 9 Reihe um viele Maps, Züge und Gebäude und läuft nun auch bei großen Städten noch gut, wenn auch nicht ruckelfrei sobald man die Zeit vor spult. Wer mit liebe zum Detail bauen und viele Freiheiten haben möchte, findet hier sein perfektes A-Train. Wer lieber geführte Missionen abschließen möchte und dafür auf Freiheiten und Detailreichtum verzichten kann sollte sich lieber mal A-Train All About Tourism (auf deutsch A-Train Alle Einsteigen! Tourismus!) anschauen.

I've been a player of A-Train since the first version came out in the uk in the early 90s and this is the best version since then. Smooth gameplay, Zero crashes on windows 11 and a great variety of trains. High numbers of slots for trains to use around 100 more than the previous version. My only wish is that there was a sandbox with no money to use but other than that its great.

Well, hugely disappointed after purchase. The game itself I'm sure is fine. However, when checking the game information on the store page (right side) its has English checked as ok! Then if you look down on the page way below all the purchase options...One sentence says people in Japan cannot have an English option, (japanese only). So, be aware this is a bit of a trick! This notice should be PLASTERED everywhere on the right side of the store page and info for the game. My refund is pending.
