Кликер с диалогами.

Время прохождения - почти 2 часа.
ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ: У разработчика есть очень интересная "a pet shop after dark", с ломанием 4-ой стены.
A HERO AND A GARDEN is a visual novel with clicking elements developed and published by npckc. You take on the role of the hero, a knight with a mission to rescue the princess. However, things don't turn out well when the magic sword the hero wields ends up harming the town that the princess is in as well as several of its inhabitants. As punishment, the witch of the town places a curse on the hero, forcing him to earn money to pay for repairs to the town. He has to tend to the witch's garden and fulfill customers' orders in order to earn money to help pay for repairs. Once the hero has paid for enough repairs, the curse will be lifted and he'll be free to leave as he wishes. That's the basic gist of the story. As for the gameplay, A HERO AND A GARDEN plays as a kinetic novel in that there aren't any routes (until the very end where there's one choice as to whom
Cyrus can take to the festival
). However, the main gameplay consists of gathering various berries and fulfilling customers' requests as well as paying for town repairs. After a brief story introduction, there is a tutorial to introduce you to the gameplay. It's pretty simple. You need to use your mouse (although a controller should work fine, too) to click on berries to harvest them, and once you have enough of a particular type, you can click on the request list to get that request done. You'll get access to the shop as well where the hero can chat with the customers who request berries and so forth. Also, once you've earned a particular amount of money, you can have repairs made to the town, which is the primary goal of the game. However, the hero may very well make friends with the townspeople as well as the princess. There are Steam achievements although they won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "profile features limited", and there aren't any Steam trading cards at the time of this review. Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my critique. I enjoyed the developer's previous game, A YEAR OF SPRINGS, so I was looking forward to trying out this game. Also, I was in the mood to play a game with a more light-hearted story. XD With that, I'll give my thoughts on the story. I liked the premise of a hero going to save the princess, but things don't end up well, and the hero is looked upon as a villain by the witch and some of the townspeople, who are monsters. Going into a bit of spoiler territory,
it turns out that the princess ran away from the castle of her own accord and ended up befriending the witch who lives in the town and the townspeople
. Of course, there's no way that the hero would have known about this until after the fact, having been trained to follow the orders he's given and all that. As the hero (who is revealed to be called Cyrus) fulfills customers' orders, he learns more about the townspeople and they learn more about him. There's some major misunderstandings between them, and the story progresses to the point where they end up resolving them. As for the characters, I liked them and their various personalities. Cyrus is a bit of a brat at the beginning, but his personality softens over time as he learns about the people whom he's hurt as well as the witch who placed the curse on him. There are the various customers, like Yen, the doctor who initially dislikes Cyrus because Cyrus destroyed his clinic. Yen comes off as blunt, and Cyrus thinks it's because Yen doesn't like him personally (which is understandable). However, as they have their various conversations through cutscenes, they realize that they've misunderstood each other and both of them make better attempts to be nicer. Of course, there are other characters, like Letta, the princess, and it turns out that the princess just wants to be treated as a normal person, not as a royal. Also, it turns out that the reason Letta ran away was
that the king was hitting her, so a bit of physical abuse is mentioned
. I wish I could mention the other characters in this game, whom I enjoyed getting to know, but I don't want this review to go way over. :o In regards to the writing, it is paced well, and I didn't notice any typos or such. The main gameplay is the clicking elements, though, where you have to gather berries and fulfill customers' orders and so forth. I had no issues with this gameplay aspect and although it can be daunting to individually click on each berry when there are more berry bushes later on, there is an assistant who helps Cyrus to pick berries as well as a wicker basket where you can gather multiple berries at once. All the achievements unlocked for me without any issues. As for the art, I love this storybook style. It feels perfect for narrating the beginning of what appears to be your seemingly typical fairytale story, and it helps to maintain that light-hearted mood. Colors feel soft and never overly bright. Regarding the music, the soundtrack is relaxing and lovely to listen to. There are a few tracks, but they suit the mood of this game well, whether it be during the berry-picking aspect or the cutscenes between Cyrus and the customer whom he's talking to. Overall, would I recommend A HERO AND A GARDEN? If you enjoy visual novels, want to play a fun, relaxing story, and don't mind the clicking elements, then this is truly worth checking out. I enjoyed getting to know the various characters and witnessing Cyrus mature in personality. Also, I couldn't help
squealing a bit when Cyrus reveals that he prefers knights over princesses
. If you enjoyed the developer's previous work, A YEAR OF SPRINGS, then you'll most likely enjoy this, too. At the asking price, I'd say it's worth getting. Although you'll probably complete the main story and get all of the achievements in around 2 hours or so, there is an endless mode where you can unlock other features, like decorating Cyrus' place and so forth. They're for cosmetic purposes, and there aren't any Steam achievements tied to them. Still, I enjoyed playing endless mode, as I wanted to unlock everything. Of course, you can always wait to get this game on a sale, but it's totally worth getting, for the light-hearted story with a few unexpected twists and such. ^^
Flying free and writing reviews solely for The Introverted Gamer.
Really, really hate that I'm leaving this developer a negative review right now because I like much of their other works. The story was fine. I never cared much about the main character, but I was interested to see what would happen in the end. The gameplay is boring, particularly for the last two "routes" since you have to literally sit and click ad nauseam until you get enough berries to complete the villager's requests. This just wasn't fun for me. You accumulate tons of other berries that are essentially useless if you decide to pick berries from the other bushes. You can't do anything with them, so you basically just sit there clicking until you've gathered enough to complete the requirements of the tasks that are left. If the developer tried making a similar game like this, I would definitely play it, but I went into this expecting to enjoy it based off past experiences with their games and felt like most of the gameplay is repetitive and tedious.
A very cute and surprinsingly deep game. I'm glad the hero is happy at the end. I wouldn't have minded if the game was a bit longer. Please check npckc's other games if you haven't already!
Adorable and Deserves Way More Attention!
You play as a hero and you tend to a garden. Collect fruits to progress. That is the very basic overview. Surprisingly enough this simple gameplay loop never gets boring. I never found myself waiting for more than a minute to get enough fruits to progress. A few clever game design choices made sure of it. The art style is adorable. I am a fan. The music, there are quite a few tracks, and they fit perfectly with the whole vibe. I really like the whole setting it creates. Similar to other Npckc games but honestly, no complaints. It just works and I'm a fan. Now the main focus of the game. The story. You won't play this game for the gameplay, it's more of a visual novel with more fun interactions. You don't just have to click through dialogue which I really liked. Without spoiling anything I think I can safely say it follows a few parallel storylines that vaguely merge together at some points. Each one of those stories is really interesting and towards the end, there's this "special moment" which always made me smile. Overall I am not surprised, Npckc makes really cool cute games, and I'm all for it. Love this. 10/10. Recommended. Played in one sitting, which took about 2 and a half hours. ________________________________________ Spoiler/question for the developer (Seriously do not see if you haven't played the game!)
Okay sooooooooo knowing Npckc's other works I am pretty confident Letta is gay. She ran away from her castle to live with a witch and now they are "roomies". Hmmmmmmmm. Nice :) And so is Cyrus probably! He is NOT straight xD "Im prefer knights"? xD If the dev is reading this, any confirmation? xP
A very cute and charming visual novel with clicker elements. Highly recommend if you are a fan of chill games
Adorable clicker game that has a moral for our hero that you should never judge a book by its cover.
Extremely cute game. Short, but I feel it's worth it. This is a story combined with an "idle" game (clicking on berries). Pros: - Relaxing, no stress. - Tells a full story through dialogue only, it has plenty of emotion and touches on deeper subjects. - Cute characters, as always. Cons: - No ability to backscroll or access history/log if you accidentally miss a sentence. - You may expect a bigger ending than it has. Other: - You can't save on the decision screen (at the end of the game), but you can save at any other time including during cutscenes/talk scenes. - Not really an "idle" game, as the berries grow fast enough and you don't need ridiculous amounts. - Endless mode looks interesting, but the berry picking isn't relaxing enough to make me want to play endless mode.
