There's a tutorial mode in the menu, but you'll still have to play it when starting a new game. The Escape key is equivalent to Alt + F4. As always, the Steam giveaway sucks.
Do not press ESC in this game!
Shade Silver is a dungeon crawler with pre-generated levels. Each level has basically the same goal. Collect keys that allow you to collect boxes, and then give those boxes to the ogre, who will let you pass to the next level. In addition, there are frogs and snakes on the levels, which theoretically should give you more stamina (?). There are also enemies, which are basically all the same. The game offers 40 levels, as well as 25 secret levels. Each level must be completed from start to finish, as the game does not offer any checkpoints, which was quite annoying in some levels. The graphics are poor. I don't understand why games of this type use some fancy font that is sometimes difficult to read. It looks bad and is illegible. The graphics themselves are poor, although not the worst I've seen. The sound is okay, but nothing to write home about. The controls are definitely annoying, as every click of the ESC key simply kicks us out of the game, and to enter the menu, you have to click M, which is very unintuitive. In addition, movement is controlled with the arrow keys, and shooting with WSAD, which is a rather poor solution when fighting bosses.
Summary
Shade Silver was given away for free for a while, and currently it doesn't cost much, but personally, I still don't recommend this game. The gameplay is mediocre, the graphics are poor, and the game is very monotonous and sometimes irritating. You can definitely find better games of this type on the market for a slightly higher price. ✔️A large number of levels ✔️❌Average sound ❌The controls are irritating at times ❌The graphics, especially the disgusting font Rating: 3.5/10 ●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●
Follow my curator for more reviews
●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬● ATTENTION! This is not worth playing even if its free.
Miserably unenjoyable
Because I have paid the 5 dollar paywall and reminded myself about this, it's time to go from discussions to the "front" page.
This is a really in-depth review of the game. The game all on itself is pretty interesting, yes there are some bad level designs here and there, but the deal breaker for me was the fact that the level select doesn't let you select levels to play, it just shows you on what levels you have got the pearls, and that is what made me create this review (Skip to the end if you don't want to read all) But let's go to when you start the game: when you press the button "new game", it changes the screen and it doesn't show you what to do; at first you think it's loading, but after you wait some minutes, you know something is wrong. I had to go to the tutorial section, thinking it would put me in the tutorial, but it just showed me what buttons I can press to do stuff. -1 point for not going to the tutorial. After you press enter tho, the controls appear AGAIN, like you didn't need to search the controls to find the buttons. -1 point for that happening. But when you press enter again, a new page full of text in a hard-to-read font, which yeah and aspect of the game, but still you shouldn't do that when the game is fast paced: imagine there was a quick time event and you had to read text in that font. -0.2 points for the font. After you get into the game, it puts you in the tutorial, which are 7 levels you have to finish EVERY TIME to actually play the levels. -0.3 points. At tutorial 6, it should be "Pay the Ogres", not "Pay Ogre's" because the 's means the ogres have something, so its gramatically incorrect -0.1 points. At Tutorial Level 7, you instantly die when you try to move, because you don't expect the poison to spawn in. "How did I die?" was exactly my first thought when i started the level because HUH? -0.5 points for an unexpected death. Tutorial levels aside, let's go into the real game. WAIT WHAT IS HAPPENING I DIDNT EXPECT THIS. this was my exact reaction when i got into the 1st level because the jump from tutorial 7 to level 1 is TOO big. -1.5 points for big difficulty gap. The first 2 secrets are put too close to where you spawn: first you try to go down and can't find where you are for 5 seconds because you teleported; second you try to shoot the frog because yes, then big black effects appear over you and you don't know what's happening and you die, until you do that 3 more times when you realise you morphed into an enemy which you will most likely not use that feature. -0.8 points (-0.3 and -0.5 respectively). You got to the end and "ooh the orb spawned", and when you get there, you instantly die because WHY DID THE ORB KILL ME? THIS DIDN' HAPPEN IN THE TUTORIAL, so you have to do the level again, then get the orb, then die because WHY IS IT SO FAST and you didn't know you can pass through the traps because you thought you would die. -0.75 points in total for both. Okay, you passed some levels then i don't remember because i am NOT replaying the game through every level to see what is bad because I think you get the point. There was a level (15 i think) when the diagonal spears started to show up, and the popular phrase "HOW DID I DIE" appears again, because you were unprompted that something like that could appear, then comes the realisation you will have to wait a full cycle to continue because why was the spear thing invented?? -0.1 points because you found out you died because of a random thing and -.2 points for the fact you have to wait a full cycle if you miss something in every level starting from there. I quit the game when i reached level 19, part of it was because difficulty, part of it was because level 17 and finding out you can't select levels in the level select. In level 17, the mechanics were wonky: i couldn't go for the orb because at the last part of the level, i was in the middle of the cycle, so when the orb appeared i went forward because if i went back i wouldve died, but then i went to the next level because of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ level development. -0.2 points. Now levels aside, let's go over controls. WHY DID MY GAME CLOSE? was the first thought i had when i pressed the escape button when was wanting to pause/go to the menu, which i think was done a total of 3 or 4 times while i was playing the game. -0.25 points for that. Additions: there isn't any settings to make the music louder/less loud -0.1 points; imo, WHERE ARE THE SECRETS? i mean actually. in the first level they are pretty easy to find even by accident, but from then on its impossible -0.3 points (-2 for 100% people) There could also be some other deductables but i might just have forgotten about them or i haven't gotten that far into the levels. While writing this, i rejoined the game, and the level select screen works as it should, but after i accidentally started a new game, there was only the starting level, which leads me to think if you started a new game while having progress and rejoined the game, the level select would reset, which would be -0.7 points (-1.5 for 100% people) if that would be true. I also found another bug, which is you can glitch into the walls if you hit the transform secret 5 times (not transforming back into a frog), going into the tp secret, then going down while youre a frog, as when you transform back your hitbox will be bigger and you will be stuck in the wall having to restart the level. -0.1 points Now here is a shortened form for everything. -1 point for the tutorial not showing up after you pressed the tutorial button -1 point for the buttons appearing again after you pressed the button you just found -0.2 points for the font used -0.3 points for rehaving to play the tutorial every time you start a new game -0.1 points for a gramatical issue -0.5 points for an unexpected death -1.5 points for big difficulty gap between tutorial 7 and level 1 -0.8 points for easy accesible secrets in level 1, leading new players confused -0.75 points for unexpected orb death, orb being unexpectidly fast, and not knowing you can go through traps -0.1 points for random unknowledgeable spear death -0.2 points for having to wait a full cycle until you can do something with the spears -0.2 points for level 17 having an (to my knowledge) impossible orb -0.25 points for the escape button being set to close the game -0.1 points for not having a sound bar -0.3 points for hard secrets, or -2 points if you're 100%ing the game -0.6 points for a possible overlook within the level select menu, or 1.5 points if you are 100%ing the game -0.1 points for an easily recreatable bug in level 1 That being said; in total that comes out to -7.8, -9.5, -8.7, or -10.4 points, which if we start with 10 points, that would be 2.2, 0.5, 1.3, or -0.4 points, depending on what type of person you are. I would also like to mention, imo i was pretty nice when giving the deductions, else -7.8 would be closer to -13 In other words, don't buy this game unless it's on sale for free. And it's honestly horrendous this game costs money. Even 100%ing walking simulator 2020, which is free, is better that this game
The idea is there, but both the UI and the font choice feel annoying after actually playing the game. The difficulty gap between the tutorial and the first level is somewhat massive, but it may be fine if you're into difficult games. Honestly, I find it is average among free to keep games on Steam. However, as a paid game, it's likely only for very few people who can overlook its issues.
