I first played through this on GameJolt and knew I had to buy it here when I found out it was coming to Steam. The level design is great, the dev is really good at making each one feel unique. This game is 8+ hours long and I would certainly say the development time was well spent even if it is fairly janky. I apologize for the awkward phrasing, I struggle immensely with structuring my sentences normally.
good game!
ok so just as a disclaimer I had the gamejolt version way back and now i have this copy on steam because of moving pcs etc etc. This game is FANTASTIC! a happy place is a psychological horror which actually focus's on good platforming which is such a fresh breath of air. the horrors great, the controls/platforming is great and i wont spoil much plot wise as its a pretty good sci-fi story. Id really recommend this game if you like games like crow 64 or shipwrecked 64 but aren't really a fan of intense puzzle solving and just want neat horror.

Writing my first ever review for Steam, and I think this game deserves that honor, given how obscure it is. A Happy Place is a retro collectathon that tries it hardest to disguise itself as a completely normal game that isn't totally horror, but what set itself from the others, is how the horror parts presents itself, and the underlaying story. And also that it is a pretty solid game overall, don't forget that. Fair warning for anyone reading this, my review will contain SPOILERS, but they'll be marked. First, let my sing my praises about this game. Has bats and you can play as one, which automatically makes this 10/10 in my book, I am totally not biased in this, but for the sake of having a objective review that isn't influenced by personal preferences, I'll those leave out of my final rating. All levels as well their dark world sides are decently designed at minimum, none of them feels like a slog to play though, and the dark world sides feel different from each other and usually have a gimmick to keep themselves fresh. None of the monsters in the dark worlds are insta-killers (save for one), which is thankful for players who kinda suck at platforming, and if they "technically" are, they just reset players back to a checkpoint and possibly lose some progress. There are scares to be had here, rarely jumpscares (usually the result of screwing a part up or doing secrets), and one can see the scares coming a few seconds away, giving anyone dread as they know something is about to happen, I like feeling that. Also The Pit was a new take on a "lives" system I haven't seen before, despite not being properly explained. My favorite level has to be Fever Freeway, definitely not because of the bats, but how its dark world side is intertwined with it,
learning how and trying to bait the monster into the spikes each time was one of my personal highlights
. It's admittedly janky with the implementation of some features... I'm specifically looking at swimming (really sucks if you have bad coordination as the camera doesn't follow in the direction of where you're going), Ivan (that cat solider in Rigged Ridge, while I've picked up on what he does pretty quickly, it isn't properly explained, and his pineapple grenades can still harm you, as I had to learn that the hard way), and The Pit (even though a NPC can spawn to help clarify how it works, but this only appears later in the game, possibly after Calcium Catacombs). I'll look past those issues given that the dev refers to the game as a "large series of workarounds", and works on a engine that was discontinued almost a decade ago at the time of typing this (or apparently not after I poked around in the game's files, as the game uses a modern fork of it, but the point still stands as the engine itself uses a nearly decade old Blender). Now for complaints that isn't tied to the features itselves. The audio design is kinda... empty, as there was moments I expected a sound to play with certain actions in the game, but nothing plays. Somehow Cinnamon City was bugged for me,
couldn't tell whenever the the giant ass Bee was "active" or not as somehow he stuck with red eyes all the time, but thankfully stopped at the last part of the dark world,
not really a complaint but I'm not passing the opportunity to voice my experiences. The
World Eater of Hyper Heights was perhaps my least pleasant part of my experience, I had no idea where the rocket was at, it was too dark to see properly, I died trying to scale slopes, then I took a break in the hub world exiting off, only to learn that the game still drops you into the level again if you died, and finally I just gave up and let the World Eater do its namesake.
The return to
Fern Fields was pretty nice, the entire area was atmospheric and calming for me, but definitely time-consuming flying around, wished we got a variant of the wings with faster flying speed. The land turning into a goliath after collecting all gearboxes was a surprise, wished it was more of a proper boss fight as it kinda just... gives up after a few swats.
If I have to give a rating for this, it have to be a 8.5/10. It's clear that there was a lot of love and effort put into this, even if it is still rough around the edges after the final update, and has some missed opportunities to use some features even more, like in bonus levels! Overall, if you want a retro-styled platformer collectathon with the horror elements actually being in-universe this time around, I can't recommend A Happy Place enough. I'm looking forward to whatever the dev brings next, and hopefully has moved on from using Blender Game Engine (or at least use a more updated one), so that he doesn't have to compromise his vision.
This is the most interesting 64-bit game I ever played, 100% recommend it I loved every single part of it and can't wait for more in the future, even if u have to get Past the Last Horizon, and even tho I've played for a long while you seam to know smth i dont
Currently I can't recommend the game but that's probably just because I played on my Steam Deck which sucks because I love the world building and storyline by the time I got stuck by the second world's purple crystal which gets you stuck on a black screen. I tried to enter the crystal twice and both times it went to black with the health icon still on the screen and music playing so I knew I didn't get a black screen of death and on that note, that was the first time that ever happened to me on the Steam Deck was this game and after the monster eats you at the end of world 1, making me miss the rest of the cutscene after rebooting the system. Also it's a game with animal characters but so far no furry women which of course, is a nitpick but I will subtracting points from the game's total score, of which will be kept hidden because I am very shy and eat glue on rare occasions. This is a dumb idea but I kept wanting to have some type of run button or a crouch dash/hop like how Ultrakill does, you can kinda do that with the leap but it's not very effective sadly. I think adding a secret speedrunning type character would be cool especially there's already built in cheese in the game with the wall jump trick if you have enough points to even perform it, I think having a faster type of gameplay would be cool to see and moreso if you have to put in a good amount of effort even getting to play with that mode for the rest of the game. I also say this because the second playable character comes with a cool life system but they mainly are part of the game for story reasons which kinda sucks, I don't hate that idea though especially because I feel like a twist is attached to them but all the same.....idk dude, I just kinda want to be able to play the game and also as a cute animal girl but perhaps that's the glue speaking so take that with four grains of salt aka my final score.
Genuinely amazing, criminally underrated masterpiece
NOTE: I haven't finished playing the game for myself, but I have seen an 100% playthrough of the game. A wonderful platformer horror game with a fun and unique story. I know the steam page looks rather unassuming, but don't be fooled, this has a lot more going on than you may presume! My only issues with it are these 3 things. - It's a bit choppy, just minor hiccups here and there, but I feel like this is either on my PC or due to it being a Blender game engine game. It's not bad enough to be an issue however. - Jumping out of water feels a bit cumbersome, but it's not much different to SM64 in that regard. - I wish you could put it into a windowed mode. Though the pros much outweigh the cons. Please check this out if you got the money and it interests you!
I love this feverdream-ish platformer! Reminds me tons of games like Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie!
good game. really captures the spirit of old school 3d platformers.
