8-Bit Adventures 2

I have no idea even where to start this review without first saying... THIS. GAME. IS. AWESOME. Ok... so... I started out playing 8 Bit Adventures 1 and had some issues getting it to run and so I posted on that games community page and the Dev. came along and helped me get things figured out which was really really awesome to begin with and showed me that he actually CARES not only about his game(s) but the players as well... BIG PROPS!!! I played the first game and it was really good!!! It seemed a bit short or "empty" in spots but all in all the story was solid and I was really happy after finishing it and it had me looking forward to part 2 but I could NOT have anticipated how INCREDIBLE part 2 was going to be!!! The story and the way it was told, the continuity to the 1st game, the pixel art, the music, the characters and character development and the list goes on and on... All of these things and more just HIT HOME and made me remember what I loved in old 8 and 16 bit RPG's of day's gone by which are the MEMORIES that are made while playing and this game / pair of games will live on in my memories right along with games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy!!! This is an absolute masterclass of a retro RPG / RPG series and I can safely say that it sits in my top 10 RPG's of all time and I say that with my FULL CHEST - ESPECIALLY since this game and its prequel were the thought of 1 person and created with a very small team... BRAVO!!! In all my time playing games on Steam or on modern day consoles, I have never 100%'d a title no matter how much I enjoyed it. It just didn't seem worth it to me UNTIL this game. This is the FIRST and only game I have ever 100% completed with all achievements and I would do it all over again!!! I even found a very special HIDDEN area of the game that was created by a 9 year old child that I cant imagine many others had found. It was extremely cute by the way and no... I won't tell anyone where you are little flame man... ;-) That said, I am not even DONE everything in the game as I am now going to begin the DLC portion of the game which is only accessible after completing the main game and I am looking very much forward to completing that area next. Would I recommend this game? 1000000% I would!!! Way to go Critical Games!!! PLEASE MAKE AN 8 BIT ADVENTURES 3!!!

I absolutely love this game! It has everything you would want from an old school JRPG! I've enjoyed every minute of my 40 something hour play through and I'm still not done! Pros Characters are so well written. Story is very well put together. The dialogue is very consistent and also very well written. The music is amazing. The pacing of the story is amazing. The story also takes many twists and turns you wouldn't expect. The pixel art and all the animations are awesome! I love the combat, Simple but effective. The boss fights are epic. The amount of content that's in the game is incredible! Cons The music can get a little repetitive at times I wish the characters learnt a few more abilities ( They stop around lvl 30ish) I wish the level cap was a little higher (Max lvl is 40) Also the fact that they give you a free DLC, with a bonus dungeon is amazing! Overall 9/10 TLDR: 100% recommended, it's amazing!

8-Bit Adventures 2 is a game that leaves me deeply conflicted, as it showcases a level of design mastery that is rarely seen in the indie scene, yet it is undermined by a narrative approach that I found difficult to embrace. On a purely mechanical level, the developer has achieved something remarkable. While the turn-based systems and overall structure remain very traditional, the game excels through its incredible sense of pacing and difficulty balance. It doesn't rely on over-complicated or "gimmicky" systems; instead, it refines classic JRPG tropes and constantly introduces new, evolving situations that keep the gameplay fresh from start to finish. This is further supported by top-tier level design that avoids the repetitive pitfalls of the genre, demonstrating a genuine talent for game feel and flow. However, the game's minimalist aesthetic—which goes beyond simple pixel art into a very restricted visual style—puts an immense amount of pressure on the writing. When a game is this visually and mechanically streamlined, every flaw in the script becomes magnified. Unfortunately, this is where the experience faltered for me. My issue isn't with the "all-ages" or "classic" tone of the story, but rather with the dynamics between the characters themselves. The dialogue and character interactions feel overwhelmingly saccharine and "twee," often bordering on a sort of grotesque melodrama. The protagonists seem to exist in a state of constant pseudo-depression or emotional neediness, perpetually seeking validation without ever truly challenging or pushing one another. This lack of "grit" or friction makes the relationships feel incredibly flat; even the teasing never goes beyond surface-level remarks. There is a profound lack of subtlety in the writing, where every conversation feels like a forced pretext for characters to over-explain their doubts and moral outlooks. While well-intentioned, the absence of emotional contrast makes the cast feel one-dimensional. It honestly pains me to leave a negative review. The creator clearly possesses an innate gift for game design and balance, and I have nothing but respect for the technical craft on display here. But in a genre where the journey is defined by its heart, the writing felt too "smooth" and lacked the maturity or nuance needed to make me care about the characters. I truly wish the best for the developer, as their talent for design is undeniable, but the narrative execution was a barrier I simply couldn't overcome.

This game is clearly inspired from classic JRPGs like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. The game is simple and straightforward, while allowing for some depth in combat. The story is very well paced with likable characters. You can save anywhere, but they have save crystals to prompt you to save and to give you boss hints or respawn enemies for extra leveling. I've only done a little level grinding, most of it has been combat via story progression. The graphics are simple, but clear and give a strong sense of place or character. My only minor complaint is that they use a lot of contractions and colloquialisms in the speech (text) of certain characters, which begins to feel tiresome after a while.

Great game, comfy retro feel

This game has tons of heart. Incredible effort from Josh and team. They deserve all the praise they're getting.

Man Ive logged 50 hours on this game and just now hit the bonus content. Its a ton of fun and the end game content is no joke.

Omg the vibes! Takes me right back to my childhood staying up all night on adventures slaying dragons and exploring the world. The story, music and gfx are all on-point to give you legit 8-bit nostalgia but with high level of detail and polish. I’ve been playing on steam deck (3 hours in despite what steam says) and it’s perfect for the deck.

Overall a great game with a good battle system and a well crafted story. The Pixel art is night and day compared to its predecessor and the music is quite nice as well with a fair bit of build variety. very underrated overall and quite obscure despite the quality. Hopefully with the Infinite Alliance crossover these obscure indie Rpg games can get the attention they deserve.
