1917 - The Alien Invasion Review - Rating: 7.2/10

General Impression

1917 – The Alien Invasion is a pretty nice combination of the action and indie genres. I don’t really agree with the “Casual” tag, because this game is pretty hard. But anyways, off to the features. The graphics are two-dimensional, retro and well-designed. It does look like an old game indeed. The textures are also pretty clear and colorful. The atmosphere takes place in 5 different places, which have been war zones during World War I. There is a lot of alien technology placed on the ground, as well as many aliens attacking the Earth. The audio is pretty good, meanwhile the music is even better! This game does have a pretty nice soundtrack indeed. It makes you to feel like a soldier. The gameplay is as simple as this: drive your aircraft and shoot as many enemies as possible through 5 levels. Be careful that you can die very fast. Throughout the levels, you are able to pick up drops, alike: shields, upgrades and the combo opener. The story isn’t something special, I’m not going to spoil the game, but what I can tell is that the main character is called Brunhield Stanmüller, and she has the tasks to eliberate the Earth from the alien invasion. The user-interface is pretty well-designed, however it is bugged sometimes. It either doesn’t respond to the controls or headlights options randomly. The controls are simple, and extremely easy to understand. The engines are alright, I haven’t met any bugs, crashes, screen freezes or frame drops. The mechanics are pretty good everywhere, I haven’t found any problems. Overall, it’s a well-designed challenging retro game.

Positive Points

Retro and well-designed graphics
Good SFX and nice soundtrack
Very dynamic, pretty fun and challenging gameplay
Many types of enemies
The atmosphere is 2D, yet complex
The ability to upgrade your aircraft
Steam trading cards and achievements

Neutral Points

A multiplayer option would be amazing
There should be difficulties, because this game is hard, and some gamers might not enjoy it

Negative Points

The game is pretty hard to understand in the beginning
The user interface is bugged sometimes
The difficulty is probably a little harder than it should be

1917 - The Alien Invasion is a great tribute to old bullet hell arcade shooters. I would recommend players to check out (or modifiy) the controls on the screen where you select the resolution settings etc as the game itself does not tell you the controls. As with every other bullet hell game, take time to learn the timing and the patterns of the bullets as it is normal to rack up many deaths before managing to clear the level. There isn't really an introduction to the game and new players may find it a bit overwhelming as there is no mention about which are the bullets that you have to avoid and which are the ones you are to collect. The game progressively gets harder as you clear the level and if you close the game you can still resume from the level that you last cleared but you lose all upgrades and have to start from the scratch again. BGM is retro and perfectly fits the pixel art in the game. 7/10
Good graphics, lame as heck. I found it very unpleasant to play and nothing about it draws me back for a second run-through. It is very one-dimensional and is just about memorizing the enemy patterns (which are identical every play) and then playing through. You don't have lives you can just keep going until you win. Boring.
It's a good shmup. Not a great one, not a bad one, but a fairly solid one. Fans of the genre are starved enough for good quality games as is, and this one is honestly one of the better ones. The graphics are truly retro - a lot of indie games will claim to be retro by making your character a blob of pixels, but this looks honestly like it couldve come out of the arcade era. The soundtrack is alright, not groundbreaking but certainly not bad. It is, notably, a shmup and not a strict bullet hell - the hitbox is kinda vague, and there's less focus on massive bullet patterns and subtle dodging and more on just rote memorization of where each enemy spawns. The patterns generally amount to "a bunch of bullets in a wave" or "a bunch of bullets in a line" from bosses, which is a bit of a shame. It's alright/10 but for a game that costs as much as a cheap lunch you could do a lot worse.
Wow! Game plays great for being from 1917.
1917 - The Alien Invasion is very much based on patterns of ennemies and bullets coming at you, grazing bullets is not a thing here, you will not dance around bullets but rather looking for a path forward as they are quite fast and the hitboxes unforgiving but it's not super hard. Complete it once and you are done with it, you'll die a lot trying but to make it tolerate you have infinite lives. It's not a bad game but not recommendable.
I love the graphic and the game, but the controls are unresponsive with an Xbox One controller. Once in a while the ship will move by itself or not move at all for a split second. I don't feel in control. Sad because I like it.
